Hey all I'm ready to put an exhaust system on my crx b16a and need some help as to which way to go, I was thinking 2" with high flow cat and stainless steal, but do i go mendral bent or press bent? Will there be much difference if i go 2.25" and just press bent?????????? pm me thanks mike15h

b16a ? Just go 2.5" all the way.

but is 2.5 too big will it decrease in power? And press bent or mendral bent?

2 1/4 mandrel bend would be nice, will be give you an all over power increase. 2 1/2 only if your gonna build a non-daily driver, you'll loose what bottom end you have and gain abit top end.

If you gonna do it get mandrel, press bend is crappy

2.5inch is a good size for a B16a. We have it on our b16a now, and its perfect. 2 1/4 is too small in the long run

Go 2.5" or 60mm mendral bend. B16a doesnt have any low end anyways so who cares.

Ok sweet so majority say 2.5 mendral bent. with hight flow cat and extractors? and will it be loud enough without a cannon or get a cannon?

Run a resonator. If its still loud then wack on a muffler, up to you how loud/quiet you want it.

2 1/4 inch is enough, if you go too big u'll lose torque.
mandrel bend provides better flow, but the diff to press bend isnt really noticable while normal driving. ull prob know the diff if put on a dyno.
why wouldnt u want a muffler?
even with a resonator+cannon it will be pretty loud.

N/A power = loud
I ran 6-7 combos before i got it the way a wanted.
Its good to have friends who make exhausts.

I've had 2 1/2 and 2 1/4. On a daily driver the 2 1/4 was alot better. Noise wise and low end (pre vtec).
Rem you will stay under vtec when your driving normally, unless you wanna get booked all the time
I only bigger once i changed from N/A to FI and i'm only running 2 1/2 atm.

Limbo, any chance you can summarise what combinations you tried, why you didn't like it, why you did like it etc?

Nick.

I reckon just go 2.25" Mandrel bent ;)

Perhaps with some nice aftermarket extractors. As for the cannon, i wouldnt put anything rediculous on there, that would make it too loud and droney, drowning out whatever stereo sounds you have pumping.

As for stainless steel, i wouldnt bother unless you had the cash lieing around so to speak. I doubt you would be able to notice/tell the difference.

Let us know how it goes mate. :)

here we go got more than i thought i had

1) Cat back offset straight muffler 2 1/4" (was still quite quiet, but it didn't really seem to improve that much, slightly more revvable)

2) Straight thru muffler canon (can't rem brand) it got loud and no improvement at all

3) Mugen copy 4-1 headers + stock exhaust - quiet, revved smoother but no improvement (kept hitting the bottom of the headers). Stupid header though made this crazy pinging noise. Wrapped header and it quietened down abit

4) High-flow cat (Cat-co), Mugen copy straight thru, 2 1/2" to canon. Bloody loud and then i hit the bottom too hard and damaged the header. Can drove pretty good but you could hear me a mile off. Was droney on freeway

5) New 4-1 header from US for b16a. Was a really tight fit so i squeezed the 4 primaries under the sump & need to mod one pipe as it hit clutch cylinder. Actually went backwards on this setup. Header was wrapped.
These headers had smaller pipes which seem to give better bottom end but i lost alot of mid- high torque.

6)JDM 4-1 headers replace the 4-1, better fitment and better all over improvement, replaced muffler with a larger barrel muffler, went to 2 1/4" exhaust. Was great but still abit loud.

6)a) installed a second resonator - better

7) Installed a twin-loop x-force. was very quiet to begin with but then became abit louder as it went along. the car felt like it was abit laggy when full throttled

8) changed muffler to a special design canon. Slightly louder and better performance!

9) Changed to Superduper large canon 2 1/2" (currently being used. 8" barrel width largest i could fit under my car). Made the car really quiet! also took off second reasonator and revved even better!

10) changed to steel Cat 2 1/2 (turbo waiting)- couldn't believe the improvement, car became more responsive

11) 2 1/2" dump pipe all changed to 2 1/2 piping all mandrel - current setup for turbo

P.S - along the way Tried to fit an ITR muffler - didn't fit, tried to fit a HKS super dragger - didn't fit

spent most of my weekends at the exhaust shop :) ask Hakan he still can't believe i made him do all these werid combos

ok so limbo, from what i garthered is 2 1/2 mandrel bent with 4-1 headers STEEL CAT, no cannon and one reasonator to quieten down the sound, was it still droney?

lots alot of chopping and changing.whatever happened to the philosophy of do it once,do it right lol.

anyway, ive got b16a running 5zigen header,2 1/2 inch mandrel bent mild steel with an over metre long resonator and a straight through design muffler at the end.its a little loud, but not stupid enough to get attention from cops,i dont really care about the noise, just want it to get the gas out as easy as possible and still be legal.has a nice deep note that lets people know your engine bay is packing something

yeah i was stupid, cos i wanted to do it cheap. It ended up being a more expensive exercise

i ended up with a large body canon to quieten it down. Its not somethng that you can buy off the shelf, it needs to be ordered.
N/A my best setup was 2 1/4, 1 reasonator, JDM 4-1, steel cat, large body canon.

The trick to keeping the noise down is the quality of the rear muffler.
You want a straight thru with the largest body size you can fit. THe quality of the packing also makes a difference.

Running 2 reasonators or even a long reasonator i found made the car quiet but abit more restrictive.

Done any Back to back dyno test? We had a 2.5' on a STOCK b16a motor and its was fine, really quiet cruising. Well within legal limit.

Its like saying 3' is to BIG for k20a hahaha

^^^that line tells a thousand words!!!!

but yeah i'm on the 2.5 mandrel bandwagon... saw no point in trying to salvage bottom end with B16a... tried with lightweight flywheel and not much diff... oh wells...

n00b exhaust shops will tell you things like 2in press or mandrel etc coz you have a 1.6l 4 banger... a performance minded shop will tell you to get exhaust sizing on engines potential.....

but as said before 2.25 or 2.5 mandrel.. depends on your plans... DO IT RIGHT FIRST TIME trust me.... if your gonna do catback first

so ive decided im going 2.5 mendral bent extractors and a cannon, high flow cat, sound good peps....................................

Why not? What do you suggest? I phoned the muffler men today and booked her in for tomorrow and they called me back and told me the only supplier they deal with for honda's were sold out so i have to wait yet another week

Impatient... You always want everything done yesterday...

Go Extractors > 2.25" Mandrel Bent.

I honestly think that 2.5" is too big. Did you ask the exhaust place? Whatd they say/suggest?

There are heaps of information for headers on this site. For a b16a, the Tri-Y headers are the bang for buck. Roughly 600 bucks they net good gains. 2.5inch is the size to go. Dont listen to all these keyboard warriors. What would exhaust place know, they dont know mcuh about performance for honda's.

2.5inch piping size is do-able on a b16..

im currently on 2.5inch catback and sure can feel the power gains up at the high rev with my butt dyno:zip: ...and in fact doesnt feel that i lost any low end torque at all

ive just got 2.5 on my b16a. didnt loose bottom end while the gains are felt hi up in the rev range.

i've got a 2.5" mandrel on my b18c type r powered crx and made a huge diff over the 2" press bent that was on it! still has lots of low end poke when needed!
