the way engine warms up is affected by some factors, such as, weather temperature, standing still or moving etc.

I don't think yours is bad, except if it goes overheat. or getting higher than normal.

4 mins is quite normal if your driving. If the car is motionless it will take longer to get to opperating temperature.

its only you water temp.. oil temp is the important one..

good coolant will genernally warm up quicker and have a better boilin pt

warming up too quick is not a bad thing, infact its actually quite desirable, the warm up time is when alot of damage is done to the engine,so making this time smaller is a benefit.

4 mins is normal,as long as the needle stops at about half way your all good.
slow warm up time is more of a problem, usually points to your thermostat being stuck open

Get an oil temp gauge... It's worth it.

your water can be at normal oiperating temps and oil will be no way near optimal.

my water reaches 84' and oil still below 50 degrees.

its take me about 20min to get oil to operating temperature...

you should only really warm it up for minute or 2..

just dont thrash it

I let mine idle for about 30-45 seconds, then slow and easy driving untill it reaches its desired operating temp.

Gearbox usually takes longer to get all nice and smooth.

i have the same car - eg with a b18. No different to any other car tho.
You can drive straight away after starting just baby it for the first 5 minutes or so of driving.

Changing my old thermostat just about halved my warm up time to around what everyone else is getting.

The best way to warm the car up is to start and drive it gently until the needle hits normal operating temperature.

i leave it sitting untill the idle drops then baby it around till oil hits operating temperature.. after that vtec will love you

^^ and your car will love U too if U do that.I drive it strait away (unless I'm waiting for my girl to get ready...) cause I can't be patient waiting.Nothing is wrong with that though.

yep i agree with most people. being turbod i always warm the car up anyways. 5min warm up and then jus drive it normally. after that i can play with vtec wen shes up and awake.

is it a bad thing to start it in the mornings only to use it for about 5mins?

kill you fuel economy - but essentially not a bad thing. just start it , let it idle for 30 seconds or so then drive off. Dont load the engine until warm. Easy.

I do it for 2-3 mins....

btw just for the sake of discussion..
do the car manuals say that to warm up the car before driving..i don't think so  ..even then we do warm it up a lil but...it's just on our heads..isn't :p
but I've read it some where that it's actually better to start driving it slowly when it's cold coz the oil additive do the coating/filming thing inside the engine at best when cold..

is it true??

I normally wait 1 minute, then baby it till temp rises.

But in winter the temp sometimes dsn't even come up, say i drive 30km to work, if i baby it the whole trip temp just rose to the 1st bar, not a 1/4 way where it normally sits, kinda scared to VTEC while that temp reading is staying below the 1/4 mark.

Is this normal? I also use thinner oil during winter to help her heat up faster.

the water temp should be at operating temp in 3-5min while being driven. sounds like your thermostat may be sticking open a bit.
