Hi guys,
About a year ago, I was a proud owner of a Black DC5R. I've sold it since and bought a cheaper runaround non-Honda car. My circumstances have changed and I've decided to move back into a Honda. I love the Type R brand. Instead of hopping back into a DC5R, I opted to purchase a black EP3. With all the raving reviews I've heard about it, why wouldn't anyone get one?
Anyways, it's great to be back in a Honda.
The car I purchased is a JDM Honda Civic 2002 Black EP3 Type R. It has 40,000kms on the clock and is stock as a rock except for the CD headunit. I intend to keep the car stock since the EP3 as a whole is already a beautifully well balanced car.
I'm looking forward to being a valued contributor to the OzHonda forums, again!

Someone else has a black one too! :) I dont feel lonely anymore :)
Those were my famous last words. 'Ill sell the GTR and buy a little fast hatch and keep it stock'
"WRONG"
Congrats, I hope you have more self control than me!!

Thanks guys.
I've modded my previous cars before, but I'm beginning to reach the age where stock looks best to me.
On the few days that I've owned this car, compared to the DC5R, the EP3 feels faster and more agile. You can also feel the difference in torque as well. There's more of it. Cruising through slow speeds in a busy shopping district is achieveable on 3rd gear. Cruising on roads and highways at 60km/h is doable on 6th gear and you can still plant your foot down in the same gear if you need some extra pick up in acceleration.
One thing I've noticed is the steering feels a little bit lighter and doesn't feel as tight as it did in the DC5R. This could be due to the electromotive power steering (EPS) system.
It also feels like you're more prone to get bad torque steer if you intentionally launch the car hard. I haven't done this yet so I can't be certain of this.
There's plenty of compartments and space to put all your knick-knacks in, especially at the bottom of the centre console where the traditional gearsticks are normally placed. With the gearstick relocated to the centre dash, the middle compartment that sits between the driver and passenger seat goes all the way to the floor. It's nice and deep!
The boot space, though not as large as the DC5R, is deceptively large indeed for a hatchback. It can easily fit a 12'' sub and all your other gear like work bags, gym clothes, sporting equipment, etc. in there as well - all at the same time.
I have received complaints friends sitting in the back of the DC5R. They've been saying that the ride is uncomfortable and that they have to sit under glass. Today I sat in the back of the EP3 while my mate was driving the car. Needless to say, sitting in the back feels a lot better and is more comfy compared to the DC5R. It feels like there is more room and the passengers no longer sits under sloping rear glass.
My mates have also commented that the ride height of the car is higher than other Type R's. This is coming from mates who own a DC2R, Prelude VTi-R and a Golf R32 MKIV. I didn't pick up on this, but that could be due to my long absence of driving a Honda.
Oh, and I don't think you'd get as much head-turns as you would've expected in a DC5R. The majority of the Sydney population I believe reckon's the EP3R is just a tricked up, modded Civic VI Hatchback. Only the true Honda fanatics will be able to spot out the car and snap a neck in the process.

hey man, nice ride. I'm really starting to contemplate getting one of these. can i ask how do you find gear changing. to me the dash mounted gear stick seems very awkward as pointed out. i should really jump into one and test it myself, but im just curious.

i'd assume it'd be somewhat better since its literally inches from the steering wheel
cabled instead of linkages like the dc5r i believe?

It feels very good. After you drive the car for 2 minutes, you get used to the gear stick position and it doesn't feel out of place at all. Several other EP3 owners can vouch for this as well .

Im a huge integra fan myself n am looking forward 2 purchasing a DC5R or S in the near future, im surprised n honestly a little disapointed 2 hear that u feel that the civic is better, n even quicker than the Teg. Maybe u havnt given it a decent thrash yet.
U seem like u bought the car 4 its practicality n an integra is definitely far from it, so good choise man, although i did kinda always think that that model was a little "van-like". Nevermind me, all that matters is that "Type-R" badge n that u love ur ride!

Hey Tegzieboi, glad to hear you speak your mind.
I dare say that it's better because the EP3 is a JDM spec. The DC5R I had in the past was an AUDM and is essentially watered down which does ultimately have a weight on my views.
Don't get me wrong. I will always love the DC5R as it holds a special place in my heart and I'm just glad that I got to own one in my lifetime. But now that I'm a little older, I do prefer the uniqueness, subtleness and the fine features the EP3 has to offer.

argh i've only seen 2 of these in melbourne, one at glen waverley, and one at SSV, and i am envious lol
i'm just a VI driver that wishes his car was the EP3 lol, its extemely tempting
EP3 is faster than dc5r straight up. Supposedly they can run high 13s stock. But yeah their definetely faster than a dc5r :)

gear stick placement is smart i guess as your hand has to travel s shorter distance to reach it.
i agree with you man bout the modding your car thing then realising stock looks best. i would still lower it but even then i double guess about doing that. don't wanna disturb the engineers hours and hours of work to get the geometry and everything right for it to work best. changing its hieght is undoing all of that.
