Looking at buying a prelude 1997 vti-r auto edition.

Are the failures or problems with the auto transmission that bad, like needing complete rebuilds etc?

And also if i am buying a car thats done about 120-140,000km what service will i be looking at doing?

ya but that thread talks about a conversion, which i do not want to do...

I want users who actually own the prelude 1997 auto and provide their feedback on how their car is going and the state of the transmission,

but thanks for the link anyway, some good facts in their that might prove helpful in the future

have had 98 auto 5th gen for some years now 125,000klm no probs, oil changed every 20k.
I suspect that sportshift auto problems arise in direct proportion to the looseness of the nut behind the steering wheel

koj

the nut located in front or behind the air bags?

rofl..

yes theres nothing wrong with autos its depends on how you treat it, whether
your a roll back burnout type or a get the revs up in N drop it in to D for a 4K
launch. you must engage the drive shafts before making a move with an auto...

downshifting or high rev up shifting whilst accelereating shouldnt not
harm the auto box...

be safe, don't downshift in an auto, its not needed.

just got my auto transmission on the lude completed, yeah, they 97 model auto ludes are an arse to fix due to the auto transmission giving out at around 100000kms
if you dont get them fixed, youll be stuck in traffic
signs to know when the auto starts to **** up, youll hear a wheezing sound which will get louder overtime, and in worst cases when its so bad, the gear signal on the dashboard will blink
of course, youll wont be able to move anyway and i eventually found out the hard way on the tet festival @ sandown
anyway, i got mine fixed for 2300 bucks so it varies
of you do going to get it fixed, youll be looking at a medium price of 3 grand for a changeover. i had one place quoting me 3.5grand just to get a changeover
as others have said, go for a 99 or higher auto lude

Ero_Sennin
15-04-2008, 08:55 PM
yeah i did, xcept for the timing belt, but going to do them in the next 450kms
since its reaching to 105000kms
but just remember, at 100000ks check the transmission on the 97 autos

the problem with the triptronic is not really a "how you treat it issue". You will hasten the problems switching to sports mode and doing stupid things. It will happen even if you baby the transmission.

it is a known issue. You can strengthen the box, there is a place in the US that sells kits for this issue.

It's a pity you did not ask around before you got a lude with the auto.

still there is hope, the first thing you need to do is transmission flush (replace transmission fluid) with oem honda atf z1.

Check if there is any leak on ur transmission, as it needs to be fixed immediately - hope it's still under warranty.

For future maintenance, always flush your auto tranny every 20,000kms.

Don't thrash it too much, otherwise u're going either to rebuild it or do manual transmission conversion.

I owned a 5th gen vtir/tiptronic before, there was 250,000km on clock. Thrashed the shit outter it. Still no problems. Car was shifting better then some ludes that had 100,000km on clock. I bought the car with 113,000km never changed the tranny oil once. So i guess it was just luck =)

You drove your lude 137,000Km without changing your Transmission Oil?

Are you being serious?

I am pretty certain that the US market lhd ludes were the ones with big problems with sportshift autos, honda was forced to fix them under recall if my memory serves me correctly the majority would fail well under 100k some as early as 40k, a bearing issue i think but most modern autos ,regardless of make, do not take kindly to lack of servicing and being treated like a race car if u want to thrash get a manual:D

Well guys im back again after being away for a while.
I didnt end up buying anything those few months ago.

Instead I have saved up and got a bit over 10k to spend on my 1st car.

ive come across a few ads for preludes...
Im in Perth so bear in mind prices aren't as good here!

btw i have to get auto.
This one found in quokka.
HONDA Prelude, 1997, VTiR, 148,000km, new eng, auto g/box & cooling system $12,000 ono.

I found this http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/HONDA/PRELUDE/Perth/detail.aspx?id=4441095&lid=4441095&pg=1&pp=1&d=0&nv=1&SG=-2108941378&pt=1

and this:
http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/HONDA/PRELUDE/Perth/detail.aspx?id=8322929&lid=8322929&pg=1&pp=0&d=0&nv=1&SG=-2108941378&pt=1

So far the last model looks the best, but most costly :(
How much u think the price can be knocked down from the dealer?
I will probably wont be afford to get the third one becoz its so much $$$ so how does the first 2 ads look?

I am also tossing up on whether to get an integra because they r cheaper and bit more economical and dont have this auto transmission problem like the 97 auto preludes.

Ero_Sennin
21-08-2008, 05:38 PM
just get an integra dood

just get an integra dood

Why lol?

I found a couple of integra ads:
HONDA Integra 1999 GSi, silver, coupe, auto, a/c, p/s, air bag, full elecs, remote c/lock, alarm, Alpine MP3 stereo, sub woofer, 16" rims, tint, 182,000km, excel cond, must sell $6900

HONDA Integra 1999, auto, navy blue, immac black/grey interior, lowered, custom exhaust, tint, all elec, CD, Laserline alarm, well serviced, lady owner $8990.

The top one looks like a real ripper in price, but kms nearing 200k mark, near this area would require a major service, wots involved and how much roughly?
