View Full Version : Injen CAI and fuel consumption

Did a search for Injen CAI and fuel consumtion but it didnt return anything so hope this hasnt been covered.

Recently installed my CAI and me and my brother totally killed it hitting vtec 9 times and have been since driving it pretty hard.

But get this, my fuel consumption is 100km/9.6

The best i ever got before i had the CAI was 100km/9.29, and that was NO vtecing and basically driving like a grandma mostly arnd 2500rpm.

Anyone else have these sort of returns for fuel consumption after filter installation? cos thats totally awesome.

I base my figures on the below calculations:

Before CAI installation

520km from 48L

= 100km/9.29L

After CAI installation and totally thrashing it:

326km from 31.28L

=100km/9.6L

As a test, I'll drive really really conservatively and see what sort of returns i get.

yep this happened to me aswell.. i cud never get close to 500ks ever.. then i got the cai and zorst.. and im gettin easy.. without the mods i got.. like 420 and that.. and thats babying it.. so smeh..... pretty damn good investment if u ask me hahahahha

Im struggling to comprehend how much of a difference an intake can make, its unbeleivable.

You think if i get an exhaust system fuel consumption will be even btter?

I had a similar impact (initially) with the K&N Typhoon intake (not a CAI)... couldn't explain it either. But then my driving style morphed and I moved to the city >_>

Driving a type R -> No need to worry about fuel economy mate.

If you after fuel economy go for Jazz or Yaris.

wasnt really in it for the fuel economy, but dam, its a bonus, it means more vtec for me hehe

Does anyone know why exactly this is the case? I assume it has something to do with colder air. Do intakes like gruppeM and mugen also result in lower fuel consumption?

driving it around 2500 is probably killing your fuel consumption, change gear around 4000-4500 will give you close to optimum fuel consumption (city drive that is)...

hm..just spent some time thinking abt this one, and my theory is..

More efficient air intake and or Cold air = bigger compustion, more power.

more power = higher rpm.

higher rpm = hitting vtec sooner

So in conclusion, my theory is that cold air increases the combustion and spins the crankshaft faster, getting more rpm, and hence using less fuel required to get to the point of vtec.

I guess same would apply to gruppem or mugen intake, they increase intake efficiency, and get you a better combustion more rpm etc.

someone confirm?

I just put my Injen CAI on last week, very happy with the results, didn't realise how much of a difference it would make, it screams into vtec......don't really care about fuel consumption when it roars to 8.5K rpm. ECU is next!

The reason a CAI COULD offer increased fuel consumption is colder air has greater oxygen density. Creating a more "efficient" combustion process. After a while your oxy sensor and ECU will adjust the needed fuel, resulting in less fuel consumption.

Ive found the path to less fuel consumption is driving smooothly and keeping your throttle closed as much as possible. Changing at 4000-4500 is unnecessary particulary in a 2ltr i have a 1.8 and its easily 'torquey' enough to change at 3500 or before. What leads to higher fuel consumption is throttle position and engine speed. If the throttle body isnt open then no air goes past thus resulting in your ECU delivering less fuel into the combustion chamber.

My average fuel consumption:
- Integra DC2 1.8ltr DC2 Stock Engine(resonator removed)
- Mobil Synergy 8000

Mainly City and Surburban Driving.

490-520kms (42 litres) = ~8.4ltrs/100kms

Hrmz.... i struggle to get 450, with my INJEN CIA... Maybe its because to do lots of surburban driving...??? I don;t find a difference from when i had it stock, beside the roar i get at 3500 and i plant the accellerator.

Gotta love the Roar~!~! ^_^
