Car: Toyota AE92 hatchback daily driver

Problem: Occurred today and was forced to push the car about half a km home :( (tiring!)

I parked the car outside a shop to purchase food got back in and the car suddenly would not start.
Putting the key in and turning it to the 'on' position shows the dash with a battery indicator only.
The horn works fine, headlights, emergency indicators, door open indicator.
Failed to push start it (manual car).
The engine does not even attempt to 'turn over'

A friend firmly believes the problem is caused by the ECU as this sort of thing happened to his van. However I think this problem may be the cause of the battery. The battery being used is a recharged one and is being recharged at the moment. After being recharged to approximately 2/5 of its power, I put the battery back in... nothing, same thing when i turn on the ignition nothing happens.
Thus I went along and took out the ECU to take to a auto electrician to check tomorrow.

What are your opinions? Is the ECU the source of the problems?

When you turn the key is there a clicking or ticking kind of sound or absolutely nothing at all?

battery is below the volts to start the car (IE starter motor)

Get a new battery

i was able to crank my car without ECU plugged in so i don't think it is ECU.
Sounds like dead battery
