View Full Version : Our Wakefield Park Day review! 21/02/08

Kind of a last minute thing to head down to wakefield park for today's open day. Me and my brother took out the EG that we built for a quick spin around the new resurface Wakefield Park track.

Didnt expect much from the day, only had 3 hours the day before to get the car ready. New oil went in, oil cooler installled and another set of rear pads. We wanted more things to be done, but time was a factor :(.

Havent been to the new resurface track, we knew people were getting quicker times. The car has a new set-up and hasnt been tested yet so we didnt know what to expect from the car, either it was going to understeer or oversteer.

Weather today wasnt the greatest, track was fully soak and raining was pouring down in the morning. There was probably about 15 cars max. we had heaps of track time in the wet :o. The car understeer like no tomorrow, and our best time in the wet was a misserable 1:22-1:24's.

AS the day went on, by lunch time there was a dry line. Our lap times were slowing dropping coming to the 1:15's-1:16's. We were pretty happy with the time, but knew the car has more in it. My previous EG achieved 1:12 on the old track, so i guess why cant this new EG cant do that time.

Towards the end of the day, the track slowly dried out as we prayed for no rain or drizzle. This was our only chance to give the car a good go. So we changed the suspension set-up by adding a degree of negative camber to the front and soften the rear dampers as the car was oversteering during the corners. At the end of the day, the car was hitting consistent low 1:12's and hitting a pb of mid 1:11's. :D

Verdict

The new surface at wakefield is definately smooth and grippy in the DRY!. In the wet its horrible, slippery as hell. I guess our times kinda reflect the new surface. Definately quicker than the old. Turn 5, Turn 9 and the last corner is where i reckon times are being broken. Turn 5 is now smoothen so that cars can hit the apex without caring for any ditches. Turn 9 is so flat now that i can flat foot it. But the biggest chance is that last corner, the road is widen so our FF can understeer all we like and still stay on the road :p

If anyone wants to know car specs i can list them later. For now, this is long enough. Enjoy Reading!

What mods were done to be achieving 11's? Was this before the new bigger ripple strips were installed? What was the timing unit used? 11's are seriously quick times for an n/a car.

1:11's is not so fast for N/A cars if you know how to drive :P

new track is great, real smooth! can get power down and brake real hard, real late :D

Yeh this was back when there was no big ripple strip. Since then, we've been back twice. Car has registered consistent :11's, with a new PB of 1:11.1. This is still with the 1.6L.

Great work Benson! Will you be at the Ozhonda/shift performance day in July? Do you have any in-car footage at all? Cheers.

@ SHIFTY: I guess 11's may not be fast compared to some other things, but unless the car is race only with no compromise suspension, engine, brakes etc, then i consider it seriously fast. My Pulsar has only managed at 12.6, which is a time i could never of imagined with ~100fwkw. 11's is territory that i can only imagine after a reasonable power upgrade or putting many many laps of research into suspension adjustments and better driving technique.

1:11 is fast, but not so fast for the Honda's...

my car is a midly modded DC2R (just rear strut brace, fender braces, semi's, coilovers, E/H/I and aftermarket pads and disks) and was doing consistent 1:11's and did a best of 1:11.5... it is also a daily, and i know if i take it off the street and drive it hard not care how ill get to work the rest of the week 1:09's-10's is do-able...

Come pop down and visit us this sunday we are at eastern creek for round 3 of NSW SS...

Yeah we'll be down in July with the EG. Your pulsar is really quick for what it has.

As for 11's yes its what we aimed for with a baby 1.6L motor which pump around 100kw atw. We used it to setup the suspension and chasiss before stepping up to the bigger motor i.e 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.4L. That was our first time out with the EG which put down the 11's.

Now its lapping consistent 11's with a best of 1.11.14 (p.b), that was with the baby 1.6L.

1.10 ish seems to be the rough time for street rego'd FWD Honda's down there.

Would love to come down and have a crack at it in my EG as it's such an interesting small track :D

Is it time to bring the CRX down again and work on that 1.07 ?

PS. Uncle Water needs to be there in spirit

Yeah and 58's is a rough time for QR aye?

Not quiet, currently it's

QUEENSLAND RACEWAY - SPRINT

1. 56.9x - ONE600/Hipowerracing - CRX EF8 - B20 - semi slicks (Bridgestone RE 55S)
2. 59.94 - CivicOnBoost - Integra DC5R - K20 - semi slicks (Hoosier)
3. 60.82 - GTRVspec95 - Civic EG4 - B18 - semi slicks (Advan A048)
4. 60.8x - CENTRAX - Integra DC5 - K20 - semi slicks
5. 61.1x - EMK20 - Civic EM1 - K20 - semi slicks
6. 61.47 - QDC2R - Civic EG4 - B18 - semi slicks (Bridgestone RE 55S)
7. 61.8x - SPEEDCORE - Civic EK4 - B16 - semi slicks
8. 62.00 - Barefootbonzai - Civic EK1 - B18 - semi slicks
9. 62.99 - Baboo - Accord Euro CL7 - K24 - semi slicks
10. 63.05 - timofytit - Integra DC5R - K20 - semi slicks (Dunlop DZ02G)

So you could say anywhere above 61's is an average for road Honda's, while anything below is really quick.

QR is more of a power track with very little undulations, a track which is really easy to learn quickly but you've got to commit yourself to turn 1 (170+ km going in).

Wakefield however is just so much more interesting, wish it was up here :D

So would it be fair to say if you can crack sub 1.12's around Wakefield in a street FWD Honda your going pretty quick ?

Just looking for a time to aim for

If I keep with the car for another year or so I will more then likely end up making the road trip down to Wakefield, as it is the unofficial time attack circuit in Australia.
