Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Heres my first Diy that im posting up, hated the look of the ugly stock civic door trims and been meaning to retrim in red suede to match my recaros that will be put in. it actually turned out better then i was expecting.

YOU WILL NEED:
-screw drivers
-red suede or material you want trimmed
-scissors
-bond adhesive(max bond)
-strong solid adhesive (megapoxy)
-hack saw
-sandpaper

STEP 1: Take door trim off (total of 5screws on each side)
1x Behind handle
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00253.jpg

1x arm rest handle
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00252.jpg

3x holding the trim to the door(not the screws holding the speaker)
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00261.jpg

STEP 2: Take plastic behind the side mirror off
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00262.jpg

Once done, pull the trim the pop the plastic pins out, then push up to take the trim off
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00234.jpg

STEP 3: Take Arm rest off, to do this the little donut things must be cut off.
i used a hack saw to cut them off, cuts really easily.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00239.jpg

once all the donuts are cut, the arm rest should pull out.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00240.jpg

STEP 4: pull off ugly fabric trim
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00241.jpg

..than use sandpaper to sand off the hairy stuff left on from the fabric, after give it a good wash with water and dry.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00243.jpg

STEP 5: Cut the fabric(red suede) larger then required.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00244.jpg

I used "max bond", patiently start from the main surface and stick the fabric on with the adhesive and make sure u spread it evenly to prevent causing lumps. dont stick all at once cuz it may cause wrinkles, start section by section until the fabric is completely stuck on.
TIP: dont use liquidly adhesives as they seem to be soaked into the fabric causing a dark stain. some expensive spray on bonds may be ok.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00247.jpg
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00249.jpg

STEP 6: Let the glue completely dry and cut the required holes.http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00248.jpg

STEP 7: Stick it back onto the door trim and use a strong adhesive,
i used megapoxy, but any solid bond should be good,
(if you dont want the armrest to be permanently stuck on, i guess it may be possible to use short screws and washers where the donuts were to hold it together)
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00256.jpg
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00259.jpg

STEP 8: Let Dry and admirer ur work.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00260.jpg

STEP 9: Put the trim back onto your door, same way as u took if off but in reverse lol.

BEFORE
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00251.jpg

AFTER
The flash from the camera made it look alot lighter, but its actually slightly darker fabric than the recaros.
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00264.jpg
http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh161/simonnowis/DSC00263.jpg

[ricer]
21-02-2008, 11:00 PM
narh grey leather lol... im boring
will it be much harder using leather or vinyl you think?

simonnowis
21-02-2008, 11:03 PM
i think using fabrics that can be stretched abit will work best, thin leather might work, but the thicker type might leave wrinkles.
leather on like a couch, theres always wrinkles so something thiner then that should be fine.
what bout grey suede lol?
every fabric store i went to had other colour suede except red! it was such a pain to find red suede

WOW looks really good....might have to try this when the car is near completion :p

also might i point something out to help others with this (hate to sound rude)

those i believe were pop rivets

instead of using adhesive or screws and washers you could also buy a rivet gun and redo them with pop rivets :D;) (not as simple as the other options but much stronger)

anyway very good diy

simonnowis
21-02-2008, 11:57 PM
heheh thanks.

yeh they were plastic pop rivets, but donuts sound cooler hahaha.
is it possible to get plastic pop rivet guns?

Nice write up. rep +1

Where did you get the glue from? I used spray adhesive, useless!!....

Also where you get your fabric?

vinnY
22-02-2008, 05:55 PM
just use contact adhesive fatboyz, let it get tacky before you apply the material so it won't soak through

if you get the glue on your hands though don't count on it coming off for a few days unless you got some acetone handy(which i luckily did, metho and turps have no effect nor does steaming hot water)

actually i got about half a can left over if you want it let me know
you can get microsuede from spotlight, no idea if you can get red though(i got black)

tweed fabric i find looks pretty close to the ctr trim. thats wat i used for mine ages ago.

Also where you get your fabric?

i used max bond, you can get it basically anywhere hardware shop, even woolies, big w etc.. it was really thick so it didnt get soaked into the fabric, just spread it out with a piece of cardboard or sumthing to prevent lumps.
spotlight, lincraft and most fabric stores had other colour suede except red.
i got mine from a fabric shop in cabbra.
$20 a metre i think it was.

heheh hey ricer yeh i can help you do it if u want, if you want urs in red suede i still have alot of fabric left over.

hahaha i do!
I CANNOT find where the hell yoi buy material, even went to a few trimming places, and they don't seem to just sell material...

I took my passenger door trim off like 3 months ago to do it, and still havent. Everyone complains about there being nothing to lean on...

and i thought they were plastic welds, not rivets ?

fyi, this doesnt work for door inserts in ek sedan. ek sedan inserts arent riverted

I have an EK sedan, what is the difference going to be? Getting rid of the hideous trim in the car is one of the first things i want to do.
Anyone from brisbane tried this on either sedan or hatch? Not real confident on doing it myself totally.

max bond spray adhesive, and ended up just using liquid nails to glue it back on, funnily enough it looks so much better in person than my pics, looks like theres marks and crease in the pics.

you know how you used that white stuff to stick the arm rest back on the door... it looks messy?

what we did was plastic weld it back on.. we kept them donut things that we chopped off and then used a soldering iron to plastic weld.

looks less messy.. but hey

good write up! works both ways.. cant see the inside of the trim anyways! good job.

simonnowis
07-03-2008, 08:23 PM
thanks guy, the white stuff is megapoxy, its used to stick granite/marble onto bench tops etc, i was actually thinking of melting the plastics on to but was too scared it would break through the holes after a period of force on the armrest hehehe. but yeh, just as long as the armrest holds should be fine.

btw did spot light have blue suede?

simonnowis
06-04-2008, 10:51 AM
lol, wats in it for me? haha. if you get stuck along the way il help you, but quite easy. the only hard part i found was a screw that wouldnt come off which i had to drill into.
i think lindcraft had blue, also black and grey.
if no luck there try the fabric shops in cabrra, suprisingly they had alot more suede.

simonnowis
14-05-2008, 10:05 PM
u mean the red mesh type material on the seating part of the recaros?

if u dont wanna epoxy, use liquid nail adhesive or u can melt the plastic donuts back on using a solder iron

mrpsi
14-05-2008, 10:36 PM

AutoNoob
15-05-2008, 12:18 PM
ever since i did my front grille using 5 minute epoxy - the stuff is the best it glues plastic and metal really well AND its impossible to remove!! lol - well u can knife it off (but still very difficult).
Liquid Nail is just crap IMHO - very soft and doesnt dry solid unless you dont touch it for a few weeks.
You can use supershort nails and buy metal washers (the ones that look like volcanoes).
Use 5 min epoxy!!! :)

thanks, megapoxy is to stick the arm rest back onto the door trim, i put the blobs like in the picture incase i need to take the trim off again, so i can just saw into the blobs. but yeh there are alternatives to megapoxy for sticking the armrest back on.

maxibond was wat i used to stick the fabric on the armrest, it will stick vinyl on, but because vinyl is generally quite thick and solid i think it wont mould to the armrest very well. any fabric will work as long as it is easily moudable.
otherwise there will be flaws.

simonnowis
27-01-2010, 08:14 PM
Im sure you can find megapoxy or similar at bunnings etc. Normally the thick 2 part adhesives are the strongest. on mine even when the adhesive eventually detached from the armrest it acted as a stopper and didnt budge at all. Washers and screws are a good but if someone is really rough with the arm rest theres a chance of it coming out or broken off.
If i was to do it again i would use screws+washer and some strong adhesive like liquid nails etc, in the end if u do want to take it off, unscrewing it would break it off from the adhesive anyway. (thats provided u didnt go crazy and apply glue all over the place lol)

nice work brother... easy to understand and good finish... where can i get this fabric (red suede) same as yours from and how long does it take to do all up...???

simonnowis
12-03-2010, 01:45 PM
I bought it from an asian fabric store in cabbra on john st (I think?), but Iv seen a wide range of suede material at spotlight in that megacentre on parra rd, cant remember what kind of red they had but I was after black. Doesnt have to be exactly same, as long as the material isnt too thick it will turn out fine.
