I'm going to do an oil / oil filter / fuel filter / spark plug change on my 1994 VTi-S. The car is a 1994 model with almost 170,000km on the clock. What oil should I be using? Also what spark plugs would suit?
Many thanks

Should hook up some NKG Iridium spark plugs. They're good shit.

Yeah they're like $18 each, I'm just after something decent and to OEM spec :)

I'm currently using Motul 4100 Turbolight 10w40 and HAMP oil filters. Normal NGK plugs are ok and cost about $3/4 each. Fuel filter just stick to honda i think about $45 if

Go for copper or platinum. Don't get iridiums. The CD4's ignition system will be marginal when faced with the increased requirement of potential difference to spark across the iridium plugs. Either NGK or Denso copper/platinum.
Oil-wise, they were spec'ed to use 10w-40 when new. So you can use 10w-40 or 10w-50. If you don't have snow or plan to drive your car to go skiing, you can even get away with 15w-40 and 15w-50 oils.
Fuel filter = Honda OEM.

I have a CD5 accord, not CD4 :)

Sorry, but still the same. They both have the same engine. :)

yeh 10-40 is recommended for Honda engines.. even though Honda makes engine oil that is rated at 10-30 =S....

well for the age.... i would say got a bit thicker like a 15W to 50W because its
worn out u needa fill the gaps

A and F series are rated for 10w-40. Newer D, B, H, F20C and K series are rated for 10w-30. That's why FEO is 10w-30.

That's what I was getting at mate. The car is 13 years old and has done about 170,000km. What oil should I go for considering the motor is a bit older and hence the requirements are different from a new motor? 15w-40 would be ok?

You'd only go thicker if you found you were using some oil. Otherwise, stick to the manufacturer's recommended weight.

I have been using Castrol Magnatec and it has been great...have never had any issues..

I ended up getting Mobil S 10w40 semi-synthetic. Will let you know how I go.

So how's the 10w40 go?

Actually really well. Car idles very smoothly and acceleration is great. I'd definately recommend the Mobile S 10w40.

I wouldn't hesistate substituting in 0w-40 and 5w-40 if I couldn't find a good 10w-40.

Which Penrite did you use? HPR0, HPR5 or Sin0?
I'd rather get new OEM spark plug leads if yours are old and $4 copper plugs first rather than spend all $100 on the plugs (which are too expensive for platinum, eventhough it is triple ground electrode)

sin0 penrite.
i've got the standard bosch on there now..
any suggestions?

Sin 0 is 0w-50. I hope you have many kms. :)
How old are your spark plug leads? I'd spend the money to change leads and PCV valve. Then you can use a 0w-40 or 5w-40 oil for better fuel consumption and slightly more power. I think a good 5w-40 like Motul 8100 or Castrol edge 0w-40 would be cheaper than Sin0 as well. (Sin0 is a good oil too)

yeah lol i got slugged 80 bucks for it..
i was gonna get the thinner penrite.
changed it at 135k on the clock
i've got the stock leads on them (i think). its all in jap writing.
would love NGK leads, but how much are they going for?

I'd stick to OEM leads. Do you know how old are your current leads? Also, change the fuel filter if you haven't done so (or don't know if the previous owner has changed it) in the past 80000km.
B147ch
30-04-2008, 12:16 PM
yeah i'll probably stick to those leads.
previous owner was a nut. he took more care of the car than his own kids!
i'm assuming he would have changed fuel filter. just gonna change the sparkies.
current leads dont look too old. any recomendations for spark plugs?

I wouldn't assume that he changed the fuel filter. Just use regular plugs of the correct heat range. What year and engine do you have? D16Y4?

Call the dealer to ask. Or try calling Honda wreckers (they might order parts in)?

yeah mate.. go to a wrecker.. best bet.

I wouldn't buy leads of a wrecked EG. They might be as old as the set in your car. Plus, accidents can cause damage to the insulation. Same reason why you don't buy 2nd hand spark plugs or oil filters. :)

hey mate,
Just for anybodys information, if ur getting 25% off supercheap, I am not doing too bad with my 20% off supercheap everytime i go.
how?
Join the nrma free2go. Its basically a big marketing thing to try and lure young drivers into insuring their vechiles with nrma for future years. Basically, as far as I know the first 1-2years is free which includes 4 service call outs (with nrma) if your car breaks down. I SHIT YOU NOT.
After the first 1-2 years, they send u a letter and try to charge you a fee which in the 3rd yr is like $13 and the next years after its like $25 or so.
they cannot legally charge u unless you agree, which means you will get a letter and probably a phone call in which U CAN SAY NO.
SO basically, if your between the ages of (i think) 17-25 you can take advantage of this offer.
You get 20% of supercheap as well as other places.
20% of supercheap everytime for flashing a card? its unbelieveable!.
I have probably saved around $200 and my brother around the same amount.
I should start a new thread haha.
