View Full Version : Survey- Euro Vtec experience

Just curious to get numbers on how many euro drivers here have not experienced Vtec?

I am curious following a statement from Jtune....

Quote:-

"from our research the majority of Honda Accord Euro owners hardly rev their car above 6000 rpm therefore never experience VTEC."

I believe the majority of people who would be interested in improving the performance of their euro would have experienced Vtec.

Personally hitting Vtec has been a almost daily occurrence as I frequently merge onto 100k zone highways......:thumbsup:

I think they were surveying the wrong group of people. As you said the majority of people who are interested in improving the performance of their euro would have experienced vtec before.

I vtec about once a day for the same reason as you =) I'm a responsible driver and stay within the speed limit, so really i've only experienced vtec in 2nd gear =)

Correct.... most of the normal drivers who dont care about performance wouldnt bother about vtec or rev it hard...

I love to vtec but I dont really like performance mods... well maybe turbo or supercharging, but that is too expensive already. And for that price I need to pay and I cant drive fast on the roads, its just not worth paying for it... :(

I've hit vtec maybe 5 or 6 times since I've owned my car (just over a month). I don't drive it far to work so wouldn't dare doing those sorts of revs with an engine that isn't properly warmed up - not to mention that there is nothing but 60 zones between me and work anyway.

Euros hit VTEC at 6000rpm, Thats a bit high isnt it?
or is this normal for later model cars?

Unfortunately with my daily commute to work, I have to admit that I don't get the opportunity to exceed 6000rpm without breaking the speed limit. :(
I used to be able to do VTEC once a day because of a nice onramp onto a freeway. Now, I hit the onramp as soon as I get out of the garage, so the engine is still cold. No VTEC for the engine then.

pretty much everytime i drive the car it hits the 7,000RPM mark,
usually only in First gear, but since i get onto a few HWY's to get home from work i usually just get it in 2'nd, and i can still count on one hand how many times i've hit vtec in 3'rd, which by the way was scary as hell!

since mines a auto, vtec comes in
1'st = 60km's
2'nd = 100km's
3'rd = 140km's

I hit VTEC about once or twice a week (having owned my car since December). I'd love to VTEC more often, but can't justify doing it at the current price of petrol; and the paranoia that surrounds the potential for more vehicle wear and tear.

I hit VTEC on some occasions - ie on the freeway when it is clear and really ram it into 6000 RPM ... the sound it makes while in VTEC is gold ! :D

Since my car is automatic, i always use the "Manual" mode to rev the car up in overtaking etc... the last time the car went VTEC was on the last cruise - the Sunday february 17th more than 3 times (VTEC)

i have experienced vtec many times in my gen 3 crx, since it was hard to get power climbing hills at 3-4k revs, and its sounded good, only 2 and rarely 3rd.

in the euro i've had for 14 months maybe 10 times, as its auto very rarely need to plant it till vtec hits

hehehe i like to get my daily vtec.... normally once about half way through my journey to work, when the engine is warm and the air is cold :p

as for people hitting vtec, the majority of euro owners probably have never or very rarely use vtec (probably every euor owner thats not on this forum, ie: all the mums, grandparents, etc), BUT id say that every single person that is looking at the jtune package wouldve hit vtec, if not reguarly...

my two cents :D

vtec is the mechanical changing of camshaft profiles...

Tobster

vtec is the mechanical changing of camshaft profiles...

Actually it's more than that (although that's what people tend to refer to it as). By Honda's own definition, VTEC (or iVTEC in the Euro's case) stands for "Variable valve Timing and lift, Electronic Control" -- which makes it more than just the changing of the camshaft profiles. To be truly accurate, it's fair to say that "VTEC" happens in every part of the rev range.

I tend to only hit the "change" when I'm out for a drive on back roads where the car tends to spend most of its time in second gear, going corner to corner (gets a little weird when you're running for a while around the change over point -- it jumps on and off!).

I occasionally hit it (once a month?) just driving around the place (within speed limits) for the joy of it and to just free up the engine and blast out the cobwebs...

The VTEC part is a step change. So it is a fixed RPM for engagement and another for disengagement, unlike Ferrari's continuously variable lift and timing throughout the RPM range. Only the VTC part happens throughout the RPM range and is also dependent on load and throttle.

Anyway, it doesn't make Honda the cutting edge of engine technology. Fiat was the first to patent variable valve timing and lift. :) Honda just applied it to a mass produced car with impeccable reliability.

For the 6MT, 1st gear maxes out at around 60km/h, and 2nd gear is 100km/h. If you dont exceed the speed limit then its legal.

Merlin086
04-03-2008, 03:32 PM
My o6 mt lux use to max out @ 103-104kph, with the jtune extreme now hits 112kph+ @ 7,500k's.(This was at Willowbank 2 weeks ago)

I vote no here, never really experienced vtec...

I've hardly hit redline in gears other than first, during the rapid acceleration, I simply can't feel the extra power at 6k, I reckon to experience vtec, you need a loud exhaust and intake mods, and in higher gear, so revs build up slower and when vtec kicks in, it's all there!

tho I've held 1st gear revs at 5k, 50m out from the lights and floor it - that accelertion and power is impressive!

EuroDude
04-03-2008, 03:59 PM
Do you have an Auto?

My 6MT gets a nice power boost during VTAK. Shame it only lasts about 1200rpm lol

Why does VTEC only come in so high? I assumed something around 3500-4000 would be a more beneficial range. Even overtaking not many people would go beyond 6000rpm. I had thought that i-VTEC altered the point at which the cam profile changed over - is this true? (New to the whole Honda ownership experience here).

Because for the combination of the stock ECU maps, cam profiles and 95 RON fuel, 6000rpm is the optimum point.

I think for the stock euro, vtec comes in at its optimum point (which is 6k rpm)

Perhaps dropping where the cam changes over will decrease fuel efficiency and decrease acceleration? Not too sure.

Just seems odd to me to have such a small available RPM range when VTEC is active. If it needs to have that many RPM why didn't Honda have a less aggressive camshaft and maybe slightly less peak power but a much wider spread? Why advertise a feature so much when it is something a lot of people will barely ever use? Don't get me wrong, the Euro's engine is a lovely example of an NA 4 cylinder but it just seems like some odd decisions got taken somewhere along the line...

Because for the engine design, the aggressive low cam was probably found to be the best. That's why you get a nice lump of torque at 4000rpm. Then above 6000rpm, Honda went with a less aggressive highcam because the engine just can't breathe enough to fill the large cylinders at high RPM.

Why put in a less aggressve lowcam and change the VTEC point to 5000rpm when all it does is make the car have less torque at low-mid RPM? VTEC just improves fuel economy and drivability. It doesn't increase power. It allows the use of lumpy cams while retaining low RPM drivability. Also, the Euro was not designed to extract peak power. That's why they didn't need an aggressive highcam and a higher RPM limit (which will increase costs a lot more)

i averaged (over three full tanks) 680km on 58Ls... used to get around 600 exact...

now thats not driving conservatively, probably two or three vtec's a day... start stop traffic in the mornings, and a lil bit of 5000rpm cornering...

im gonna try see what i get off a tank driving under 3000rpm no WOT...

fuel filter cost me - $54 (trade price from honda) and took me about 3 hours to change (i had to remove my subs/amps/enclosure first, then cut around the 3mm bitumen sound deadening, before even beginning to change filter lol) but it should only take someone else maybe 1-2 hours? depends how fast u work. i have full workshop manual, which was very handy! I better tune down my urge of going beyond 6k rpm. Occasionally when VTEC kicks in I let it hit the rev limiter as the needle on rpm gauge went very fast after 6k rpm. To me it's not good for the engine as engine will wear quicker. On the positive side, hitting VTEC on 1st gear (6MT) is awesome. That's all I can say :)
