OK guys.. thought i would post this up.... as the recent avalablity of the Facia kits for the FD.. i would think that many people have started/completed/thinking about there stereo systems for the FD.

So this thread is for people to talk about there stereos, share pictures, propose future installs, and to use for a referance in the FD..

Please post up any problems you have and how you overcame them.. i kno many people will have the same problem and might not have the expericance in how to solve the problem..

I will upload a few DIYs for

Installing a Double Din facia kit and headunit
Installing wiring
Upgrading Speakers
Building the perfect 12" box for a FD

If anyone else has some DIYs post them up.. and if you know any easier way of doing somthing dont be afraid to tell me i did it wrong lol.

And also a few pics of my current progect

( Mods i placed this thread in the new civic section instead of the audio section, to try and keep everything with FDs together. )

Good work guys. I've stopped mucking around with system since it'll cost a lot (and is very wasteful) if I try to upgrade any further.

Currently using Alpine l/o with a RF 4ch amp, MBQ splits up front, stock rear, and RF P2 sub. Installed by Lifestyle.

Haha keep it stock at least for a little while... IMO it wasn't bad for a $25k sedan! You'll appreciate it more as you upgrade it; and that being said, swapping over to the DDIN straight away seems almost stupid since you won't even have time to check the car for rattles or anything.

Mine will be done in dynamat through out.

Is the much airspace behind the side trims in the boot

lol looks cool! man i still dunno what to do about my system. i realised it's actually very troublesome having such a huge subwoofer and box.. considering trading it in now for a P3 shallow mount.

Haha fair enough. Just be warned that some people have had issues with their Civic, and if you go and pull a chylld (i.e. pull stuff apart whilst it's still new), you may end up getting the flick from the dealer when you try to get it checked. Hope the setup goes well for you!

No offence chylld if you're reading this- you were definitely a pioneer on these forums lol!

The 8thcivic DIY guide is the only one I've seen so far. Seems about right based on when my tweeter fell out, I followed the cable and yeh. Should be kinda similar.

Damn that sounds good. If only I hadn't spent so much on L/O converters, iPod adaptor, and steering wheel controls with the VTi-L, then I would definitely consider; but it looks like I'll have to wait until my next car before I go all out with aftermarket sound equipment.

depend what splits u got. if u put dynaudio split, not enough power.
but if just "normal" splits, alpine would be strong enough.
anyway, i'm not the fans of japanese amps ;)

sony always produce "rough" bass sound.

but don't use these things for SQL (Sound Quality Level) audio
ps. SPL is kind of the audio like bumm..bum....bumm...:D

Amp on left side of split seat (in the boot) and sub on the right. Kinda sucks since I can no longer use my split folding seats for their purpose and I also run the risk of crap knocking against the amp in the boot. But it looks good from outside? *shrugs*

right, the stock tweeter staging is not best place, cause the tweeter sound would bounce back by the windscreen. the best staging is at A-pillars.
but like Jace said, no choice if u want keep it tidy, have to go to stock place ;)

my experience, 2 x 15" the volume of the box (read: size of the box) need very big to reach full capacity of 2x 15" sub. need to make the box until covered the whole ur boot. if not, the sound of the sub would wierd.
remembered my past (long long ago;) ), compete with 2x15" JL Audio sub but the box only half of the boot, with mine, 2x10" RF but with max box required for 2x10" size. mine won unbeaten :D

why do you face the subs towards the seats? not towards the boot?

towards the seat would get better better bass sound and clearer (from my ears), compare facing upward, rearward, and downward or free-air sub.
for my 7 years audio exp in the past, sub in sealed box with port and toward is the best.

Hey guys ... I need some help with audio system setup and any input would be great. This is my first car and all .. so learning all their is to mod a car xD.

I want to keep the stock header and speakers ... but put an amp and sub in ( pretty much what jace did, as i find the stock speakers to be alright). Can anyone tell me how much for alright setup and where in melb for professional job? How much all up? Is it hard for DIY? as i know some mates who have done audio setups.

When I got my system done, I think I was one of the first (well considering my FD1 was from the first delivery... and I installed the sub pretty quick) so I didn't want to go to some local JB Hifi setup... went to Lifestyle. I think nowadays you should be looking approx $1100 if you want brand name gear professionally installed (i.e. Rockford sub, amp, and all the wiring plus labour).

Well considering that the car is not so new and people in general have more experience with it, I'd say if you went to say JB Hifi, you'd probably be looking at somewhere around the $500-$700 mark for a pretty decent Pioneer amp and sub with all necessary wiring and whatnot, fully installed.... but this is a pure guesstimation.

Even with my setup the boot spae is limiting. It's okay for a roadtrip for the weekend or carrying a bunch of auditors bags, but not much else. Carrying furniture when moving house is a no-no (even with seats down, my amplifier sits on the back of the seat so can't put things on it), and picking up my bodykit requires someone elses' car.

My subwoofer is set up like that but the thing is; that requires me to undo the cables and detach the whole thing so I guess as a last resort I could, but it's more trouble than it's worth (easier just to drive my sister's car). Amplifier can't be removed though.

well thats usually the reason why people place there amps on the backs of
there seats, or under the driver or passenger seat not even in the boot.

i use to have my amp under the drivers seat, but then moved it to the boot

then it comes down to the subs do u want 1 or 2 or some more lol

having 2 is awesome but one does a good enough job, personally i have
one 12" sealed and 2 amps in the boot can detach the sub at any time but
never need to cause i can move it around, mind you its not an FD boot.
but the thing is the FD boot is probly the same size as a CD5 accord boot..
just different shape lol

yes its quite easy, where the seat belts came from the junction of back rest and seat, in the middle there is a 10 mil screw which tied the seat from moving. so first unscrew the 10mil screw and click the left and right on each of the button under the seat and it will pop out. i just did my sound last weekend and thats how i found out.

Yes, its quoite easy to remove the seat. look where the seat belts came from joint between the seat and back rest, there is a 10 mil screw which u need to take it out first in able to release the two clip under the seat. then it will be able to remove the seat easily. for the front engine, yes u can tidy up by putting all the cables into crimp tube...i did mine last weekend and run all the cables under the carpet..not an easy task, but looks more neat...

Did anybody get the optional "Bass works sound system"?

From the honda website -

This audio performance pack includes two special low-frequency rear speakers, which guarantee high-quality sound in the lowest and low-mid frequency range. Applicable for all Civic variants.

Does this mean it replaces the standard rear speakers?

and what is the control unit below?
where does it go?

i enquired about it...

yes - it replaces rear speakers... the amplifier thing gets mounted under the parcel shelf...

imo for $500 its not worth it... you're better off getting something after-market... dealer didnt think that much of them either

That's all true- sound stage isn't the best (so that means points 1,2 and 4 are identical!)... but as you mentioned as well, it's neat and tidy- and people outside who look in, won't know you've modified your sound system and it's less likely to attract attention from bystanders. That's the biggest reason why I did it that way too.

If any one is considering to change their head unit and run the subs and speakers of that, it is well worth it.. the sound quality increased big time! compared to running my amp and sub from stock head unit.

Also if any one is interested where to get the antenna adapter i got it from an AUS company http://www.egear.com.au/

Its called the Scosche Honda 2005 + Antenna adapter Part number is HAAB

I got my old ipod interface which connects to the stock head unit if any one is interested, its the USA spec hon2y which is the neolink which they have rebadged it to sell as neolink.

hmmm..confirm what ??? ..lol
brackets ?? yes, they (2pcs) come together with 2din dash.
$10 pockets ?? hmm.. seems very hard to find.
FYI. OEM Honda single din drawer (not pocket) about $90-100
sony single drawer with AUX jack inside the drawer (for ipod ?) about $50-60 at supercheap auto (forget the series, i think Sony RM-700 ??)

arrr great thanks mate..

yer im looking to replace the stock HU in my FD1 but cant afford a 2din unit at the moment.
got a nice alpine single for it but didnt know if the 2din dash supported singles.

do you know if its possible to obtain wiring harnesses for the stock HU's? if i take out my stock i don't wanna snip snip my wiring just yet (even though i will probably rewire the car as i upgrade the rest of my gear)

Does anyone know the maximum size the factory tweeter location can hold? The speakers i want are either MB quart ref or premium, but i was told the premium tweeters wont fit in the stock location(premium tweeter size is 1.6") . If that is true then i will just get refs, so does anyone know?

Im pretty sure someone has put in type R splits and they have 2" tweeters. Just need confirmation before i start buying.

Read alot of tutorials before attempting to do this being my first fibre glassing "project", but all turned well! The idea came from a post by DMX a while back, so thanks to DMX!

So in brief, steps involved are pretty simple: I took out the original plastic panel, wrapped it with cling wrap and two layers of foil paper then build fibre glass on it. This allowed me to make a duplicate of the original part (i.e I can keep the original panel and put it back on if things go wrong). Next step is to create the MDF ring and fix its position onto the fibre glass duplicate panel, then layer the fibre glass on it. Finally just sand it and put carpet on it using contact adhersive. Comments welcomed!

Thats very true.. i have had alot of experinace around audio and making cars nice and loud. just remember.. if there are gaps between the pieces or dynamat.. it wont work.. you will have wasted time and money.. if nessesary.. overlap the pieces. and keep the peices in as big a sections as u can. less joins the better.

Hi guys,

Do you know if the tweeters below will fit into my front stock location? tweeter location i believe its right in the corner of the windscreen. I remember reading thats not ideal, however i jsut want a stock look, don't want too much changes.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-INFINITY-Reference-605cs-6-5-2-Way-Component-Set_W0QQitemZ190271311076QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Car _Parts_Accessories?hash=item190271311076&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Also, I want to use the stock HU for amp, speakers.

Do i need an RCA cable? and what brand/ price range you recommend?

Amp wise, if I buy those speakers there and buy something similar in term of RMS, do i need a stronger amp?

for example if i choose clarion brand from lifestyle, do i need to get the apx4361 or apx4241 is sufficient power

http://www.lifestylestore.com.au/products/categories/car/Amplifiers/4-Channel-Amplifiers/

Btw JaCe, lifestyle quoted me around $1500 for 4 Channel Amp (i think he quoted the RF p4004 amp, 2 sets of MBQ speakers (front & rears) + installation, and that's way too much i reckon, with the stock HU, its not worth it IMO

Ask JB where the double din was made from. A few months ago a Jap one was around 180 and the thai one was either 150-160.

Prices might have changed as it was last year, and i know audio places sell them for even more then 200, so its probably a good price. Saves trying to import yourself.

I can confirm the fronts will fit 6.5" and most probably the rears. I currently have 6.5" and i remember another member stating he had some in the rears also.

I had mine installed, so most probably spacers were used but they don't need much adjustments or any screwing into the car body.

Im guessing your not going to amp the speakers? Type S should be fine then as anything above type R would be a waste if your not amping, but don't expect alot of improvements over the stock speakers.

There would be a difference but probably not that noticeable. Headunit amp just doesn't give enough power to hear a big difference.

There are even cases where the actual speakers sound worse then stock because of that. I forgot who but someone here has type s speakers, not sure which member but he has a fd1 also. Hopefully he might have a better answer for you.

Im going all the way man

Amp the speakers and a small subs as my rear boot is used often. Most likely going Type R's. I mean, if your replacing speakers over stock, having an amp is important for better improvements. I use to use jaycar kevlar, precision range for my splits, rears, amp and sub and it went hard for the value.

Thanks for the confirmation, will need to check if spacers are needed.

I reckon if possible try going for the type R speakers as well ... The sub bass might drown out the speakers. Probably least go have a listen and compare :p

sorry if this has been covered before but can someone please let me know:

what size are the speakers F+R? - 6/6.5" Splits/co-ax up front?
what size rear speakers into shelf? - ? 6x9's for a bit of extra bass as i dunno if i wanna run a sub or not?
4ch amp to run all the speakers?
what size speaker wire would be suitable for a half-decent system?

and lastly, what brands should i be looking at?

dvd HU (already have screen)
double-din fascia kit
speaker wire

front splits

sorry if this has been covered before but can someone please let me know:

what size are the speakers F+R? - 6/6.5" Splits/co-ax up front?
what size rear speakers into shelf? - ? 6x9's for a bit of extra bass as i dunno if i wanna run a sub or not?
4ch amp to run all the speakers?
what size speaker wire would be suitable for a half-decent system?

and lastly, what brands should i be looking at?

I think i've covered everything right? - i also need to look into getting a dvd hu as i already have a screen, so altogether i need:
dvd HU (already have screen)
double-din fascia kit
speaker wire
tweeters
front splits
rear speakers
4ch amp?

amirite? - thanks in advancce for any help!

First thing is you must come up with a budget and also if your going to diy or get it professionally installed.

Speaker sizes are 6.5" pretty sure both front and back. You can still put 6x9's in rear shelf i think but you have to play around, dunno about cutting (unsure on this).

I reckon you should just run a sub. If you have ever had a proper sub in a car you know that you 6x9's will never satisfy.

If you don't have enough for your budget just get some decent front splits and a sub all powered by a 4 channel amp. That's what most car audio places would suggest in terms of smaller budget.

Hey stig have you ever sound deadened a car? Sounds like you have. Since we both from Melbourne maybe we should get together and sound deaden them at the same time.

Ive never done it before so would be good to learn from someone who has :P. Beats paying an installer $800 for whole car i got quoted :O

Thanks for ya help mate.. not a big budget on car stereo - probably around the 1k mark.. would that be enough for a decent amp+splits+tweeters+HU?

never really been big stereo fan lol, my last car was a starlet gt all it had were 2 seats and a whole lotta rattle lols

nah i have never sound deadened a car LOL i was just planning to do it myself, isnt that hard, just grab some dynamat off one of the ebay stores for around $250, i assume we'll need around 2 sets so $500 all up.

then just pull off the front door, slap it on the whole door on both sides, put it back. same thing with the boot lid and the rear shelf i have to figure out, but i think it shouldnt be that hard, just time consuming

was planning to do it once i get all the speakers so i could do the whole thing at once :)

lookup diy under user '53XXX' he has a red eg which shows u how he sound-deadened his car.

If you weren't adding a sub then probably would be enough. I would have a look at mobile electronics and check out beginners forum and there are heaps of threads with budget systems which you may help.

When you planning on getting speakers? It is pretty easy but there are small things you just gotta know such as some parts you dont meant to dynamat and also opening apart doors certain ways to do it.

I don't think you will need 2 bulk kits unless you were doing all around the boot and multiple layers. In a bulk kit there are 9 large sheets. Prob need a bulk and possibly at most trunk as well.

well the dollar is going up so im pretty happy, maybe after i get my tax return back or something which gives me some money to spend, only a student yo :(

ill prob end up buying just one bulk and see how much that gives me and if i need any more ill get more, cant wait to get rid of this rattling though, can only max my volume at like 10 before it starts rattling

Although there are no tweeters in the factory position does anyone know how hard it would be to run speaker wire up there for installing aftermarket tweeters?

or am i imagining it.. up in the corners..

There isn't any. Think everywhere else in the world they got tweeters but since our civics are Thailand made they didn't put any in.

yeah thats where tweeters are, u can see the mesh thingy haha, but i think its empty LOL

theyre empty lads. apparantly installing in those spots are also uber hard

One of my mates has his tweeters there so I'll ask how he did it. He has the tweeter sticking up out of those two areas and the mesh is gone I think.. I'll try get a picture.

Now I'm not bing lazy, I wanna learn how car audio works and I will look It up more once I finish exams. Could someone please like make a list of a decent stereo setup that can be had for about 1k?

HU - pref a pioneer dvd, so the harness is easier to hookup to my pioneer screen (?)
Front splits - 6/6.5"?
Tweeters? Or dw cos of my budget?
Amp - 4ch?
Speaker wire?
Can my budget allow for rear speakers or sub?

Thanks a bunch!
Also, where can I go to have a look and see what products are "good"? Like which brands have a good reputation for quality + performance?

depending on the standard of product you want to buy, can tell u if u can get the sub brah

I don't necessarily want a sub, even though I listen to a fair bit of techno/hardstyl etc I want a system that's able to deliver clear sound (loudly =p) haha. I'd need the best of quality/price/performance.. Are there any products like Hu's, speakers, amps etc that have proven to be the best bang for buck?

That's what in after.. Bang for buck, end of the day I want to be able to listen to clear music not like the nubs who roll with the epic doof doof boot rattle lol

sKy.xD

If you want sound quality you don't want to be getting rear speakers as they just mess up the clarity. Unless you have constant rear passengers then you would possibly want to but other then that no point.

Pro's themselves just fade the back out and either leave the stock speakers or get cheap coaxials (That's for SQ comps). Majority of the money is spent on the front splits for speakers, so if you don't have a budget over 2,000 don't even worry about rears.

300 on head unit - probably alpine or even eclipse 3200.
350 on front splits - old MB Quart discus (new name is MYSTRO) rated one of the better speakers under $500.
350 on 4 channel - If you want something really good you can get decent stuff 2nd hand. With a smaller budget that's the best you can do. Have a look on MEA website forums for 2nd hand stuff. Everything on there is good stuff.

If you really want something new then the best bang for buck is probably jaycar. For wiring look for the brand Aeropro. Very good and cheap budget wiring.

I would heavily suggest getting a sub afterwards. Have you ever had a sub in a car? Honestly i couldn't live without it. I had $1100 dollar focal splits in my car without subs for 2 weeks, and i couldn't stand it. You cant really go without a sub for bass. The boot rattle isn't so bad for the civic so don't worry.

yes speakers are called "splits".
can get in 2-way or 3-way front splits with crossover or not.
i'm getting some utopia be XD

anyone know a good quality sub? my budget is 1.5k a sub.
i'm currently thinking of Focal 33WX2, apparently won subwoofer of the year for SQ

sKy.xD
06-06-2009, 07:07 PM
A bloody great sound quality sub! Just make sure you make the right enclosure for it, as if you don't it will sound fairly shit. If you prefer softer subs and SQ this is definitely the right sub.

Also you might want to have a listen to them first. We all love to achieve sound quality to an extent but don't expect a massive amount of bass, as in they won't sound very loud.

I was close to snatching one of these cheap but i still love the heart thumping bass.

whats difference between 2way and 3way? and what does crossover offer compared to just normal?

sKy.xD
06-06-2009, 07:28 PM
2 way is a woofer and a tweeter. 3 way adds a mid range tweeter. Each play the low, mid and high frequencies. Crossovers separate the frequencies to the separate speakers.

If im wrong someone correct me

black8thgen
06-06-2009, 07:44 PM
ohh i see, so obv crossover would be more sound clarity in each range?

ah thx for clearing it up =D.

1.5 g can be spent in such a better way..

mm i wasted 2.5 grand on my old entry level system.. regretted it straight away.
not worth it at all.. im so happy i sold it for the same price a month later
i got over it so fast.

if your goign to do it make sure you have a decent amp to run it..

atm i only have a high powered sub and it is satisfying all my needs, both audio and sexually. i'd only upgrade the speakers and whatnot once i blow them, if i ever do. i really cant see why you guys want speakers so badly? i was under the impression our stockies werent that bad? someone said it was made by a subsidiary of alpine or alpine themselves.

sKy.xD
09-06-2009, 06:07 PM
I think most of us got that impression when first jumping into our car. Once you get into a car with a decent sound system of course then you will notice a difference.

Put our stock speakers on a board with aftermarket speakers and you will definitely notice a difference then haha. Some people are really into their audio so stock speakers will never be enough.

Also just because its made by alpine doesn't mean they will be good. Their own aftermarket speakers aren't so good either.

black8thgen
09-06-2009, 06:07 PM
yeah im thinking to just get a sub and an amp? cos the stock speakers seem pretty clean and give some base. =].

sKy.xD
09-06-2009, 06:33 PM
Yeah that's fine. I had 2 x alpine type s subs and they were alright with the stock speakers. If you get really good subs that's when they will drown out stock speakers.

What amp and sub were you looking to buy?

black8thgen
