DETAILS have emerged of how an Australian man allegedly managed to take a car on a 6200km test drive.

The man allegedly stole the car from the Melbourne suburb of Frankston, before being arrested in Tennant Creek, Northern Territory.

According to staff at Travis Honda, Thai Tam Luu, 30, entered their store last Thursday and asked to test drive a Accord Euro 2008 model.

Dealer Ian McKenzie said he spoke to one of the sales team for about 20 minutes, convincing him he was a genuine buyer and producing a driving licence.

"He seemed a legitimate gentleman. He stood at the desk right in front of a camera. He wasn't afraid of being photographed or videoed,'' Mr McKenzie said.

Mr McKenzie said the salesman knelt at the driver's side showing the "customer'' instrumentation, then walked to the other side.

"As soon as the salesman stood up to get in the other side, the driver planted the foot and took off,'' he said.

The salesman grabbed at the door handle as the $40,000 Honda lurched forward but the thief had already locked the door.

Mr McKenzie said the Euro was a top-of-the-range model with satellite navigation.
