2. Was its hype anywhere near the real world product
I am refering to the 1.6 crowd, 1.8 need not reply.

i meen if you find a second hand in good condition or reconditioned HKS turbo for a better price i would snap it up...otherwise go for garret. Just make sure you stick with the name brands. No XS power or anything like that but you probably would already know that :)

you know garrett make them for HKS, you can usually get a Garrett one for quite abit cheaper. I dunno about the IHI ones

We've had really good results with the HKS 3037S (56 trim) on B16A's
Both as a complete turbo & as a core fitted to a smaller Garret body.
(This was to enable use of HKS cast manifold)
Re leaning toward IHI,
IMO, these are fantastic turbo's.
We've used the IHI RX6 TCW77 P22 & P27 with good results.
Bare in mind, though these turbos aren't as large as say a GT35 or the like,
They are large turbos & are best suited to a built motor*. You could certainly fit one to a stock engine.
We've done that with B18C-R's & you get 220kw @ the wheels @ 12psi with the right setup.
But you're not making the most of it or using it's full potential on a stockie.
* By a built motor, I'm talking pistons, rods, cams etc so the thing can hang together at 10,000+rpm
If you're on the cheaper side with the parts, ask people who've done it before as to what the limits are with the parts.
It's not so bad with a B16A as they have a shorter stroke & are more able to be reved.
If you're looking at turbo's from HKS smaller than that, the only other one I rate is the 2835 & 2835R.
The others don't really suit Honda's & the larger ones than those mentioned would better suit a pure drag application.
Re what makes them so special over say a Garret.
The turbine clearence in the exhaust housing is pretty much where the difference is.
Fitting an HKS turbine housing to a Garret GT works too...
Though the compressor wheel trims are a little different, there's not much in that.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

No problem,
Yeah their housings can be fitted to pretty much any Garret GT turbo.
That is GT28~GT28 / GT30~GT30 etc
The turbine wheels are identical - both Garret.
The list of available housings & Yen prices can be seen here:
http://www.hks-power.co.jp/products/turbo/hanyo/gt28/gt28.html
Part numbers are: 1141-RAxxx or 1141-AKxxx (for GT30 odd fitment flanges)

Oh and to answer the question, generally speaking, no its not worth the hype or money. They do good things, in applications where space or turbo frame size is a concern, but for your requirements, no. A similiar garret turbo will yeild results, and the extra money saved can be spent on other parts of the setup. Remmber that the turbo package is the key. Not just the turbo.
Its either the IHI VF38 or the HKS,
I will give the Garret a miss, I am fitting it to a 1.3 BTW guys, decompression is lowered, so I am sure it will be laggy - but I am OK with that as I ahve no real help to get the power down as it is, so lag is OK, my engine is good to rev to 8, 8.5 if I am stupid enough.
I have done the sussy, wheels tyres ect, but its still wheelspin city, other then welding the better box's diff, I have little or no options without investing in a 4x4 setup, which is not an option ATM.

dont even really waste your time lookin into 4x4. I think most of us have in our spare time and its gone know where...either Way to expensive to do or just impractical. I've heard of a accord station wagon in japn that had a 4x4 box which someone took out of and custom made it to fit the civic but its a rare case....There are plenty ways to keep the power down other than 4x4...Getting a good Box that doesnt slip, bigger tyres with wider guards which im in the process of doing atm. few suspension changes will help also.
the civic wagon is 4x4. there have been a few threads on h-t lately with good sucess. Its not that hard, and the drivetrain is surprisingly sturdy.

Really? the last time i looked into it was about 2 yrs ago or so. I have seen this cool movie of a Show car in the states that a guy put a s2000 motor and rear wheel diff, drive shaft etc and did a burn out in a car park, looked really cool rear wheel burnout in a civic...
PS: sorry for hijacking the thread.

Ive got a Honda-tech account, i go on there occasionally but its only rarely i actually need help these days. I usually come on here to chat and help people out. not to call them noobs. Because thats what forums are for isnt it? being a noob and needing help?

I havnt owned a honda for around 4yrs now. I consider myself fairly well versed in them though. Yet i learn something new everyday. I guess thats one of the reasons why the honda-tech commuity continues to grow. Because its all about critial thinking, proving your point with your hands not your mouth.
I have my reasons to be jaded.
