Hey guys, not sure if this has been covered, but I wasnt able to find much information.

My next car will most probably be an s2000 since it has been my dream car since i was in high school. But what I want to know is which bits of the s2000 has been upgraded since the 99 model up til 03 up til 06.

From what I gather from googling about, there have been upgrades like bigger wheels, HID headlights, Glass rear window as opposed to plastic, different style rear lights, Limited slip differential and traction control, stereo? Could s2k owners please tell me which model has these upgrades? Just need to see which model I will most likely buy. (Budget will most probably be 35-40k)

Cheers

Difference between 99-01 & 02
- 02 has glass window with defroster
- has round tweeter covers + tweeters
- pockets in door trims
- Polished wheels
- color coded front windscreen frame
- Has no color coded badges
- Wind deflector
- Silver bits on top of seats
- upgraded head unit
- Upgraded clutch
- coin pocket in centre armrest
- Leather/aluminium gear knob
- Chrome rings on rear tail lights
- Clear side repeaters

Current shape
- VSA
- Drive by wire throttle control
- Triangular tweeter covers
- Updated front & rear head lights
- Updated front & rear bumpers
- 17 inch alloys
- Oval tipped exhaust

thats all I can think of on top of my head, with your budget try aiming for the 02+ model.

What year has cruise control? Some seem to have it and some don't. Is this just an option?

And what year does the current model start? 2003?

Only the USDM has cruise control.

I was going to import it all for my car from the US, but it requires the entire steering rack etc, and is just not worth it.

YOu can buy aftermarket cruise control units for about $220, so I believe this is the option some people have gone.

The AP2 shape was 2004 onwards.

Thanks again ludecrs! Good thing you have done all this research before and have prices on hand.. Helps out heaps!

Would you say its worth the extra $3000-$4000 for a 2002 model as opposed to a 99-01 model? Would it be cheaper to source your own parts and install them on like you did?

Cruise control would be super nice. Considering theres more s2000s in Melb, if i went on a road trip i would def need it for the trip back.

well the only difference btween 99-01 and 02-04 is the glass window, chrome headlights, chrome ringed taillights, leather centre console, radio, wheels, tweeters on the doors, window frame hasnt got the black tape on it, gearknob and the new clutch.

The extra $3k-4k is worth it just for the clutch and rear window IMO.

Then you can do what I did and just put a shit tonne of AP2 04+ parts on it - though in truth, by the time you do this, it works out about the same as buying an 04+ AP2.

lol, welcome to club S2K :p

Be sure to get a car where the 80, 120 160km services are already done - or be prepared to hand over another $700-$1200 for the service costs.

Well im looking for a car that is around the s2000 price tag $35k but not having to modify it too much. I think buying a 99-01 model comes with so many etxras that are needed.

The cruise controls you'll see in Aus are aftermarket. You could install the USDM cruise control but it requires the US steering REEL (not rack).

The Reel is a ribbon of cable that sits in the steering wheel and allows electrical connection when the wheel is turned. Aftermarket versions use a RF connection.

Thanks for the input guys, looks like i'll be getting an 02+ just for the glass window and clutch upgrade. Depending on how well my future job pays i might even get a later model :D Can't wait to own one of these bad boys!

Agreed including insurance.. being an s2000 incurs a $2000 car excess that is just bollocks!
