Hi,

I have an Integra VTiR 1995, its only done 102,000kms. Last week i checked my oil level and it was just above the MAX mark on the dipstick. Last night i checked again and the oil level was about 3mm below the MAX mark on the dipstick. Any suggestions on what is causing this? or is this normal for vtec engines if taken to redline about 3 times a day?

This shouldn't be the case unless there is a leak. Was there any oil leakage on the spot where your car was parked? If so, that could be the problem.

Otherwise, this might sound like an obvious suggestion, but just in case, did you clean the dipstick before checking the oil? ie. Pull it out, wipe it clean, put it in, pull it out again, then check fliuds levels. (chi if you are reading this, I'm refering to the dipstick! nothing else!) :p

anyway g3vtir, before checking the oil level, let the engine cool first. otherwise the reading may not be accurate. As not all the oil would have drained back into the sump.

Yo dude did u check the oil when the enginge is hot? The level on the dip stick will be higher when the enginge is warm/hot. Check it when it is cold to be sure.

yep i did the usual check...i checked it this morning before warming the car up for work..i cleaned the dipstick first also...then checked it..then cleaned it again before another check jsut to be sure. But same result...oh and there are no leaks at all

Well last night after replacing the thermostat i gave it a good thrashing around to see if it would overheat...about 30min of thrashing...could this have caused it?

30mins of thrashing?! wow thats a lot!

that could have done it!

you reckon that wouldve really done it? i mean i used to thrash it before...not as bad but it dodnt go down that quickly

cars prespire oil.... look around your rocker cover gasket is there oil marks on the gasket or a leak... it is normal for cars to do that.

and when the engine is warm it will come up lower on the dipstick than if the oil was in the sump cold.

well, 30mins of non stop redline action is a lot of thrashing, and the FEO isn't an oil made to sustain that sort of treatment... just check it again when its cold and on level ground, I wouldn't be suprised if the 30mins of non stop thrashing consumed oil.

considering Hi to Lo on the dipstick is only about 500mls anyway (from memory)

Armin, Its not normal for cars to perspire oil. If oil is coming through the gasket, then obviously the gasket isn't sealing properly!
Oil "can" read higher when the car is cold. as when the car is cooling down, its had time for all the oil to drip back into the sump.

You should only be loosing oil via the exhaust (ie burning oil).

If I remember correctly, from the high->low holes on the dipstick, the amount of oil is 1L

It is almost definite that the amount between the high low holes is about 1 Litre as I just serviced my tegR myself 3 weeks ago.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is sort of related... What oil are you guys using in your VTi-R's? I was using Honda FEO but just changed to Fuchs Super GTO...

when you want to make an engine oil reading of the dipstick comparison, it is important that you do three things
level ground
engine and oil temp must be the same
you must check the oil within the same amount of time from when you turned the engine off.

do another test taking this into concideration and do it over two days or so of normal day to day driving with the occational Vtec ( not breaking any road rules :) )

Wazza, do a search.......the oil we use was discussed previously

get a catch can....u could be venting the oil through the PCV valve in the rocker cover...pull off the induction pipe and look inside...i hope there isnt a thick gooey film of oil
