Disclaimer: The following is provided as a GUIDE ONLY, and neither myself nor Ozhonda take any responsibility for the outcomes of someone else doing the following. You follow these steps at your own risk!

Only demonstrated on K&N Airfilter cause thats the only cleaning product I have left, I should've made this write up when I still had a K&N Air Filter.
But I used the exact same method for my Apexi Air filter and that turned out fine! & I think there are proper instructions on the K&N site, but heres from a personal experience.

Whats needed:
1x AIR FILTER CLEANER (For your Filter Brand)
1x AIR FILTER OIL
1x LOTS OF TIME
1x CLEAN/ Non-Dusty Room
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9866/spa0815sx6.jpg

Instructions:
Make sure you are not driving your car for the whole day when you do this (Just to be on the safe side)

1. Spray the Air Filter Cleaner onto the outside of your Airfilter
2. Spray the Air Filter Cleaner onto the inside of your Air filter
NOTE*: Completely Drench it.
3. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, dont let the air filter cleaner dry on this.
NOTE*: This apparently loosen the dirt if I remember correctly from the instructions.
4. Rinse your air filter (Yes thats correct!) Rinse it all over.
NOTE*: Continue rinsing until you think all the air filter cleaner is gone!
5. Let it sit at a position so the water can drip out easily!
NOTE*: DONT USE ANY FORM OF SPEED DRYING (Hair dryer etc)

OPTIONAL STEP for K&N Airfilters:
Once the air filter is dry.
6. Spray the air filter oil EVENLY across your airfilter.
NOTE*: Let it dry for about 20 minutes
But I suggest a whole day.

Touch your air filter after about 20-30 minutes (or a whole day) and see if the filter oil rubs off (its a pink colour)

I can post some images, but it'll be with a different air filter as I didnt take photos of it when I had my K&N Air filter.
But photos are requestable!

Apply only a little bit of oil to the filter at first...

If you over oil it and it fails to dry, which is probably will the first few times you try this... You need to start all over again

Is there a reason why you have to leave it for 10 mins to dry?

What do you rinse the filter with?

What position do you mean to sit it when you dry it? Do you have pics?

you dont let the air filter cleaner dry on it
you leave it for about 10 minutes so it loosens the dirt,
and then rinse it out with water.

and the position you let it sit is in a way so gravity can take its toll and soak out the water,

usually if you got a pod, (non flat one) sit it upwards, and flip it every 30 minutes or so

but yeah when you oil it, do it evenly and lightly

too much oil will cause u to start again, since the oil wont dry.

The cleaner solution is alot like a degreaser and the filter oil is like a sticky dust attracting oil, and once its dirty you need to wash the oil off and apply some new stuff. The filter oil does alot of the filtering not just the fibres found on the filter, so to soak the filter in water would be useless.

a simple idea.. not sure if you guys keep the OEM filter when you change to K&N or similar, but I do.

When I clean the K&N filter I just put on the OEM filter for the day. Its pretty much brand new condition and only using it for the day when the K&N is re-oiled.. afterwards just put the K&N back and store the OEM panel in a clean plastic bag for the next cleaning job.
