Easiest way to remove a crank pulley from an 8yr old Honda motor car without 1) damaging your car by 2) using a breaker bar + socket + hollow pipe?

Currently open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

agreed.
Also think of the position you are pulling the bar from... it can help make a difference.

I used a screwdriver in my flywheel to stop the engine turning over. but i had no trans on the engine.

air tools would help if you had them

Just pay someone qualify to do the job..

simple job - keep shit out of the engine unless its an engine alone - but then you could even lock off the fly wheel to stop it from moving..

if you still have the box on the engine and its still in a wroking car here is what you do...

put it in gear. get someone to hop on the breaks. break the nut.

I really struggled to get mine off.. I tried the long pipe/breaker bar and had no luck even after locking the engine and stopping it from turning (by removing started motor) I tried using regular rattle guns but mine was too tight. I ended up using a 3/4" rattle gun and it struggled for a bit but got it off in the end.

use the long pole to bash the breaker bar theres no need lock the engine just turn it till you get to the compression stroke then give it a good whack with the pole and it should break loose by the shock done it a couple of times works a treat got it of the forum there a diy somewhere with a video

Good video.....but if you use the rattle gun in short bursts,as apposed to just holding the trigger(as in video)you get more torque from the gun as the hammers are working at thier maximum. You will proberbly find that the gun would of loosened the bolt by itself using this method.

not with a 1/2" gun and crappy compressor.

you need a kick ass compressor and a nice 3/4" gun as mentioned above.

a nice wack loosens the nut enough for you to undo it with a bar or a rattle gun.

thats right.

all i used was leverage.
it definately wasnt the best method as my engine was on a stand. The force i must have put on it :o

Some of us dont have access to a 3/4" gun or a compressor though.

Now i have it off i need access to a tension wrench to reinstall mine now.

Never had a drama getting Honda crank bolts off with my 1/2" drive gun using the method i described.

I have a 3/4" drive gun but really only use that on Toyotas.

If it came off that easily its probably been off before?

Honda put 240Nm of torque onto the crank pulley bolt - in most instances, that's more than any stock Honda engine torque.

I detailed my car, inside, outside and under the hood today, and had a look at the bolt - it even looks like a prick to remove....

You can't get a rattle gun to the pulley bolt on the S2k. There's a crossmember in the way.

And some have estimated 500ftlbs of torque required to undo it so 'in gear and brakes on' ain't gunna do it either.

You need one of these:

It arrests the pulley and crank while you put a 19mm socket, breaker bar and extension pipe on the bolt and pull with all your might.

Yup. Just used a 50mm nut from a hydraulic coupling and a piece of steel I had lying around.

Welded it up in my basement. ;)

You won't be saying that once you have to attack it! They're a pain in the arse if you're trying to do it at home without proper tools.

I tried doing it at home to start with - read here: http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83592&page=2

I end up buying the pulley holder tool and held that in place and had to use a 1000ft.lb rattlegun at work to get it off (we've got a massive air compressor).

They suck!

well sorta on topic... any one taken off a stuck fly wheel with out a flywheel key holder?

my engine is out and trying to rattel gun or use leverage to break the bolts will not work!
