View Full Version : What's the trick to remove the PCV valve?

I'm trying to replace the PCV valve in my Civic. I can't access the valve directly from the engine bay or from underneath the car as it is tucked underneath the intake manifold runners and even if I could I am doubtful that I would be able to remove it from the hose and install a new one given the lack of space.

So I was planning to remove the PCV hose and valve completely from the car to make life easier, but the PCV hose that attaches onto the intake manifold plenum is stuck. How do I get this off? I've tried heating the hose with a heat gun, prying it off with a screwdriver, spraying WD-40, twisting and wriggling the hose off but it doesn't seem to want to come off! The only other thing I can think of is to cut it off and replace the hose with a new one. Does anyone have any tricks in getting stubborn hoses off? Or any tricks specifically for replacing the PCV valve?

Cheers!

What motor?

The valve just pulls out. Use some long nose pliers. Theres a rubber sleave in the intake manifold between the runners and the valve just sits in the sleave. With mine is was very easy to remove.

With the hose to the IM, you just need to remove the clip and try and break the bond so it pulls off. I know your already doing this, but just work your way around the hose so it un-sticks.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "What motor?".

Are you sure the PCV valve sits in the foam sleeve on the Civics? According to the service manual the PCV valve is at the end of the hose and connects directly to the block and this is what I am feeling with my mitts when I follow the hose into the block.

Thanks for your input, though.

you have a EK civic...chances are its a EK1 ? A singel cam yeah ?
You need SMALL hands for this

On your engine...you need to 1st follow the rubber tube that goes from the inlet manifold to the middle of the intake runners (find it)
Place your hand BEHIND and UNDER the inlet manifold. Feel directly there and follow the rubber pipe from above , to a black box on the side of the engine ( this is the oil separator) The PCV will be placed in the SIDE of the box , all you need to do is PULL the hose out and the PCV is placed on the end.

Pull the PCV off , and install new one. Place back in the same hole and make sure its snug and fit. You are done.

but you do need to. You need to check/replace it every 40,000ks.
I dont know anyone (professional or noob) that does it but i know I have recently replaced mine and no doubt will reap a mid-long term benefit of reduced oil consumption etc

I see. When replaced does it make the car run better or it's more for a clean system?

Both. Its part of the positive crankcase ventilation system
basically to keep the crankcase vented and clean as possible

I was quoted a little while back from honda about $37 so I jus pulled mine out and cleaned it with brake cleaner.

;1598836']wouldnt just installing a catch can do the job?

That's a bandaid solution. Always solve the problem at the source first.

I'm thinking to replace the PCV Valve and put my catch can back in (more for track days).I remember Dave (TurtleEK1) saying after every session it would catch a bit of oil.

That's what I would do as well.

that does not fix the issue. You need to replace the PCV every 40+ks , simply cleaning it does nothing. There is a small spring and cone or ball inside , this weakens with time and use. So dont be a tightass and just go replace it !

Yeah.. $37 = no smoking for 4 days. :)

I put a new PCV valve in a couple of days ago.First time after 93,000km.No change but I'm guessing there more oil blow back into the Intake manifold so I gotta get my Oil Catch can back in.

You wont notice it straight away ,consumption over time and the running of an engine will tell ( can ping less due to cleaner combustion)
no there should be less oil blowby into teh intake manifold with a new PCV.
