i think it's illegal in VIC, Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're correct. In VIC, it's illegal for a P-Plater to drive an AU DC5R due to the power to weight ratio law.

The DC5R weighs 1160KG and has 147kW, therefore has 127kw p/ tonne, whereas the legal limit (in VIC) is 125kW/tonne.

And you can't add things to your DC5R to weight it down to reduce the power-to-weight as the police go by the figures of it coming out of the factory, which is 1160KG =(

I swear to god, do police even bother checking the cars P Platers drive? When I go around Melb uni sometimes I see a P plated boxter and e46 m3. Yes you heard that right, e46 m3 with a p plate sticker on the window. WTF?

Guys i found the answer.. THx omgitsmatt for that web.. i shall copypaste the quote from there..

However, if a probationary driver with a pre-July 2007 licence has a car that does not meet the power to weight restrictions, but it does comply with the new high powered vehicle restrictions effective from July 2007, then the probationary driver may drive the car..

So in other words, the power to weight ratio is totally SCRAPPED, just for victoria though..

@ curik, i think the police just aims for people with jap cars p-platers as it's often easier to mod the car and therefore easier to go over the limit..

Actually, you can drive the daihatsu copen, if you looked on the website then you would see the copen is exempt from the laws. I think it's a good law to stop inexperienced drivers from getting overpowered cars and driving like idiots.....killing themselves and other people :thumbdwn:

r you sure bjornzzz???

"The current power to weight restrictions will continue to apply for drivers who obtain their probationary licences before 1 July 2007." thats the direct quote from http://arrivealive.vic.gov.au/node/199.

thats why i opted out of getting a type R. didnt wanna risk paying $1100 and losing 3 demerit points.

ill just wait will i get my full license - that way insurance will be a bit cheaper as well.

P platers in VIC can not drive DC5Rs as it is over the power to weight ratio allowed for them.

My friend who was on P plates was fined for this in his DC5R.

End of story. Close thread thanks.

@ kiet88
hmmm weird.. as it states, However, if a probationary driver with a pre-July 2007 licence has a car that does not meet the power to weight restrictions, but it does comply with the new high powered vehicle restrictions effective from July 2007, then the probationary driver may drive the car.

@ temp
the new law states:
An engine of eight or more cylinders;
a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles);
an engine that has been modified to increase its performance

And the type R meets all these conditions.. The cop who fined your friend is an idiot, so get your friend to write in..

the one passenger rule is coming in July 2008.. so sucks if you get your Ps after July 2008. Plus longer Ps test, 40 minutes instead of 20, longer Ps in terms of years..
