so who can shade some light on what advancing your timing is? something to do with making 98octane run more efficiently?

Read those links provided above for advancing both ignition and cam timing.

just in case you're on the wrong side of the first thread posted here, you advance the ignition timing to set it to the ideal point for better combustion with high octane fuels.
if you make changes to your cam timing, you should adjust your ignition timing accordingly.
