watsup guys.
i recently purchased headers for my car. stainless steel ones.
but im worried about the underbonnet temperatures it will reach.. will it peel the paint under my bonnet? bcoz i dont have the under bonnet insulation.
wat can i do to reduce the temps.

thankz.

You'll be fine. I have a ramhorn manifold, very close to the underside of the bonnet. No insulation. Bonnet is super clean.

heat wrap.

It will put off more heat than the cast factory manifold but when driving air blows through anyway.
You can ceramic coat or heat wrap the header's to help.

dont heat wrap they will have half the lifespan and crack

^^Yes.Heap wrap can reduce under bonnet temps down by 75%.I
I heard,it's either SS cracks or ceramic so don't wrap it.But I can't remember which way around it was or is it both?

Not much else you can do except build a box for your pod air filter and take the rubber strips off around the engine bonnet (and raise the bonnet at the rear too) to let the hot air escape.

you shouldn't have any worries.

NOT TRUE headers with CORRECTLY INSTALLED WRAP will NOT crack or have shortened lifespan. That rep you got was a lucky thing wanted it to be a NEGATIVE... bullet missed you this time.

it is a proven fact that heat wrap does weaken and damage headers over time. but please explain the proper way of fitting heat wrap if that is the case.

why r u so quick to give people negative points as u did to me for making a valid answer??? it is hard enough as it is to get recognition and post quality points here. i only had 2 but u gave me -4. thanks alot

Negative rep is not called for,C'mon Claymore...

That is claymores way of having a cry. Don't worry about it.

Anyway, Ceramic coating is best but heat wrap is still very helpful for reducing under bonnet temps

Yeah But Damn Its Gonna Be Hard Just To Get My Rep Points Back To 0. Im Glad Other People Understand The Way I Feel.

Cheers Guys,

Sorry For Taking Everyone Away From The Topic...

haha yeah a bit harsh claymore, not that many people are going to buy heat wrap a pay a man to do it for them "correctly", but please do explain how this is done?

Stop abusing your power! Negative rep for incorrect information,WHAT! You gotta be shitting me! Man your gonna scare everyone away from here and those that are here will be too afraid to post anything in the fear of being negative repped.Which by the way pretty much stuff's ya if your just starting out and haven't got any rep points. It's gonna take a long time to even break even again let alone having any rep at all.Something you would know nothing about cause when you joined rep points were being handed out at will.

Ben has beened PM'ed!

what about making a simple heat shield??? that should stop alot of the heat going up to the bonnet.

i didnt have any probs with heat until i went turbo, after a year of driving, the bonnet insulation is only starting to fray abit (no peeling paint tho)

That would certainly help with the underside of the bonnet but not under hood temps.Wrapping the header is the only way I know of to keep under hood temps down.

fit some spacers to the bonnet hinges to raise the rear of the bonnet. old school but very effective at removing hot air from engine bay.

guys, i think the main point claymore is trying to get across is that unless u have heat wrap or bonnet spacers or anything like that, u shoodnt be be posting ur opinions without sources to back them up..

because it can lead to mis-information

from my perspective, reading theses posts, it can appear that a few of u have just read something, somewere about heat wrap and decided to post about it without being sure

im not saying any1 is wrong or right, but for a skeptic likemyself, i dont take much notice of posts unless its personal experience, things people actually have done to their cars, or quoting proper sources and info

just try to do that

if u found proof that heat soak shortens the life of headers, and posted links to back it up, claymore would have probably given u a +ve rep

Yeah but he just went about it the wrong way.You can't just come in and run things your way after it's been going a certain way for a long time.People suffer because of it.If that's the way it is then people need to be informed then you can implement it.You can't just implement it,that's not fair.
But creating a place where people are afraid to post will just result in a handful of people posting and the rest just posting in the lounge. And that's no fun.We need to be able to have a go and corrected if needed. This is a better/funnier way of learning. That's why I love it here, eveyone is equal and you don't get hammered for having a go,unlike other sites where I don't have any desire at all to go.

lol some funny stuff here. as harsh as that was, people need to think before they post misleading information. It happens so often on here, blind leading the blind.

Plain and simple, don't post ANSWERS unless you know it's correct or at least say afaik or i think but ain't sure etc...

Coat it in what Jase? How much?

JasonGilholme

HPC coating is what its called. I don't know anywhere in particular that is good in qld but it is available as an option when you purchase turbos and down pipes etc.

Its used to keep the heat inside the pipe rather then letting the heat emit to surrounding objects in the engine bay. and as we all know, hotter exhaust gasses mean faster exhaust gases (more power yO!)

Cheers Jase!
I was always gonna wrap my x-force header but I was told by a couple of people that it will crack...
It really is hit and miss but I hear ya Limbo! :)

Ceramic coating cost about $400-$1000 per header depending on how long etc. its not cheap. but will not crack at all

holy shit per header meaning per pipe or per set of headers?!

lol is it really worth paying 400-1000 for ceramic coating, might as well just risk it and heat wrap.
u can pretty much buy new headers with the cost of ceramic coating.

90LAN
05-04-2008, 06:26 PM
u dont need to heat wrap or coat it
it would be cheaper to get a new bonnet than get it coated
i love the look of a burn stainless header
if i was going to coat my headers which i want to do
i would get it in a coating call " titanium nitrate "
for bling

Do you mean get a new bonnet if the bonnet needs replacing?

EG5
06-04-2008, 12:28 AM
I paid $250 for my header to get ceramic coated.
It does reduce engine bay temp by abit but not that much , I got no fire wall mats on my EG hatch and I can always feel the heat from the header ( being a K series )

EuroDude

why not just cover the underside of the bonnet with heat shielding instead?

06-04-2008, 01:38 PM
Heat soak doens't shorten the life of the headers. THink about it. The air around the headers is probably 60-80 C, but nowhere near as hot as the temperature of the header itself. So heatsoak doesn't damage the header. It's the incorrect wrapping that causes different heat transfer rates across the header. Different heat transfer rates = different expansion rates = cracking. Do it the right way, and it won't crack (well, at least not as quick as if you did it wrongly). I've seen very dodgy heat wrapping where there were gaps left uncovered by the heat wrap...........
