hey guys.
i need some help.

just about 2 weeks ago, i decided to paint my new boot (old one was eff'd to the days)
so heres what i've done soo far but it has turned out pretty ugly, any help would be greatly appreciated

1. Paint strip (i heard from people that i screwed that up already..)
2. sand it down and primer and more sanding down...aka very smooth
3. black paint mixed with general purpose thinners 1:3
4. sand down with wet sand paper 2000grit
5. cut and polish to rejuvenate the black after it has dried (now very nice black)
NOW THE STUFF UP
6. clearcoat. put it on, doesnt seem like its on, not enough gloss, put more on, still not shiny enough but before i could see the change, rained and kiled it
(will sand back down and redo...jst need some advice now)

(all spraying was done in a garage with a compressor except clear (tired and cbf anymore)

any help would b greatly appreciated and if any can help me finish the job would be even better (south west syd, cabra region)

thanks guys
terry (for a red dc2 with black boot atm..the onli one atm..lOL)

1:3 mixture on the thinner is incorrect too btw.

Normally 1:1 or 1:2 is used.

Correct me if im wrong, but thats what I have had success with.

if you have never done it before then i suggest dont do it!!

after 2 diy spray jobs i can safely say....let the pros do it!!!

Spraying a boot will only cost you a few dots. Go get two quotes to have it done professionally and then reconsider if you still want to puff away in your cell.

yeah, quote goes for 500bux, thats y doing DIY job. something about taking glass off and this and that....think the dude jst didnt wna do it for me, i also made the mistake of paint stripping it rather than sanding it down, so thats what the 500 is for.

question: is hardener really that important? can i jst leave it in an enclosed area for a longer period of time?

Dont you have to bake the clearcoated part in a large oven?

Or does that just speed up the process?

One of my friends has done this a few times 2 his car (had some pretty nasty scratches all along the side n dent on boot), pretty much following the same process as you.

He used basic car paint n clear bought at autobarn in spraycans n it turned out pretty decent, he resprayed almost half his car doin that.

Coat, wetsand, coat, wetsand n so on. Prolly about 5 coats of paint n 5/6 coats of clear, turned out pretty good, hard 2 separate from stock paint.

Only prob is that he prolly paid a good 250 bucks for all those cans but the result was good n he was able 2 respray almost the whole side of his car in bout 3 hours n drive it that same day, obviously need a warm, not windy day tho.
