Hi

I'm having a problem here...almost everytime I accelerate..1st gear,2nd gear and so on...I hear pinging although it's not loud but still can hear it. Especially uphill. When I turn on the air con, it's getting worse...pinging in all gears...(1st,2nd n so on)

Can it be fixed just by adjusting the timing?

Sounds like your tappets need adjusting.

adjusting the tappets besides reducing the pinging, will make engine sounds quieter?

Yes.If the sound is 'uniform' then I would say it's the tappets.ECU MAN has done a DIY on here:

Or take it to a mechanic.How long since they were done?

Also check you timing. Have you over advanaced it?

Have you played with anything else?

I'm running Vpower, Shell. I'm not sure If I've advanced it or not. But my engine is B16A turbo.

I need to confirm it first...then I'll let u know...

Yes the pinging.
Get the tappets adjusted and see if that fixes it first.
Your welcome!

It's always hard to meet up with someone anyways.Great advice can be given over the net.Then just take that info to your mechanic to do if your not confident to do it yourself 'yet' :)

Since:

1. Its a turbo engine;
2. The pinging sound comes on during acceleration;
3. The pinging sound gets worse if the aircon is turned on;

I deduce that it is pinging and not valve noise. Are you running an aftermarket ECU?

to have a turboed engine he HAS to be running either a piggyback ecu or a standalone ECU.

Try reducing the timing a touch (pyhsically via adjusting the dizzy) and run a higher octane petrol ~ see if that helps

Otherwise get it checkd out asap ads this could damage your engine

you could also check if your sparkplugs are the right heat range for a turbo. One possibility also is that your head or valves may be carbonised

Not necessarily. Its not unheard of to just run a stock ecu and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator in low boost applications.

Either way it doesn't sound like valve noise. Check your timing as mentioned.

If it is turbo'd, have you asked your tuner what AF ratio he has used? Do you exclusively use Vpower or do you use Caltex Vortex98, Mobil 8000 or BP Ultimate once in a while?

I've been using Vpower since I bought the car...Never try caltex or mobil or BP though....

Breeza - i'm assuming it hasn't been tuned properly as yet.

P.S where are you getting V-power from? all the servos i goto are always out, so i been pouring Vortex 98

Mate....i think sydney almost run out of VPOWER. I went to syd january 2008. I couldn't find VPOWER in the city. So when I drive back to melbourne. Almost all SHELL servo in the highway have VPOWER.

So I guess you have to drive to the highway...hauhauha...
