hey guys,

just looking into how much a civic Ek1 (97 Cxi hatch) can tow?

im thinking of buying a cheap jetski and was wondering if i would be able to tow it behind the ek?

also is there an off the shelf tow bar kit you can buy for ek hatch?

cheers

they cant take much but it should be ok with just a jetski and trailer.

if its an auto you might want to look into getting an auto cooler if it seems like its struggling.
if its manual try to baby the clutch while towing,no huge slipping and no huge launches.
also be mindful that your brakes arnt made to pull up that much weight, especially down hills.

you should be fine though

the 'D's may not be very torquey but a jetski shouldn't be any probs
my cxi has the electrical connections for a trailer but i don't recall ever seeing one with a tow ball. try calling honda.

i rang 2 places yesterday. got one quote of 550 plus 200 installation :O and then i rang honda in tassie... $196 for the tow assembly and $23.00 for wiring :) gunna order one over the next few weeks. then get myself a ski! might make the back of my car look as low as i want it with the ski hooked on!

should be fine mate

itll be like having a full load of very fat ppl

i had a full load in my civic, d17

me, 90kg, one in the front 130kgs, 3 in the back, 100kgs, 96kgs and 90kgs, lawl

but yeh, it only felt slightly sluggish, was fine

so im guessing a jetski with trailer should be fine, but double check the mass of the jetski, i dont think it reaches 500kg for a small cheap one??

Jord

u mite want to keep a tow rope with u and find out where u can hook it on the front

this way, if u ever get stuck, itll be easy for a passing 4wd to help

i dont have pics of it installed as it is still sitting in my garage, i purchased it approx 1 month ago to install to tow my jetski. but i purchased a large jetski and have decided i am going to sell the EK and purchase something that has more towing capacity!

here is a pic of it not on the car... i think it bolts to rear chassis rail and then somewhere under the car.

the tow bar and bolts + universal wiring kit i purchased are for sale if anyone is keen?

cheers

Ok so update. after me saying im keeping it im selling it im keeping it (ek) that is. i finally got around to getting the towbar installed. total cost including installation cost me $325 bucks (cheap after i got quoted $850 and told it was a 5 how job) in my personal opinion it looks shit haha. but it does exactly wat i want in both towing my jetski and carting my pitbike around on a bikerack. it has a removable tongue attachment so that makes things easier :) only prob im really spewing about is that i cant get a rear lip :( which sucks a lil. but anyway here are some pics for those keen to see :) btw my ski is a 1998 yamaha Xl1200 weighs about 480 odd kilos with trailer and full tank of fuel.

I took the ski out on sunday for the first time behind the EK. tows pretty easy is noticible that its behind u tho. when i put it in on the ramp i when in slightly with the rear wheels and it sat as u can see the pic. so it isnt in the water as far as i would normally have it but its sufficient :) getting it out on the other hand was a hassle :( low tide and a slimy boat ramp caused the car to slide when i was reversing just the trailer down :( but i got my mrs to sit in the car and have foot on the brake so all was good. after sheering the teeth off my whinch getting ski on (i normally drive it on, but car doesnt go back far enough) i hoped in car and drove it out surprising lil effort was needed.

my advice to those with civics :) get a ski they are awsome fun and mine isnt small yet the ek still handles it :)
