View Full Version : S2000 Aftermarket parts review...

.::F[L]Y::.

Im bored at work. So just a thought i want to put this idea out there.

I propose for us fellow S2000 owners who has aftermarket gear on their cars to do a mini review on the parts they have installed on their cars following the format below. This would be an excellent source of information for any newcomers or anyone else who is considering buying a particular modification for their cars. The format would be as follows

Also, Here is a similar thread over at S2ki

Bang for buck intake. Helps with throttle response blah blah blah

Rating out of 5: 3.5

Mod: Invision Mugen Replica Intake
Price: $450-$500 AUD landed
impressions/comments:
Very nice engine bling. Not as loud as the AEM V2. Improved throttle response
rating out of 5: 3

Mod:Backyard Special Magnum Street Exhaust
Price: $2700 USD (when new)
impression/comments:
excellent welds, not loud or droney. Good exhaust for a daily driver. In terms of performance gains there probably arnt much apart from the weight savings over the standard unit. Fills up the rear valances nicely though. Gives the rear end a tougher look
rating out of 5: 4

Mod: T1-R B Max Coilover
Price: $1700 USD
impressions/comments:
Hard to compare to other brands like tein or buddyclub as i have not had them on the s2000. But so far they have been good. Absorb bumps quite well. Can lower car quite considerably. On softest setting its bearable on hume highway and parramatta road
rating out of 5: 3.5

Mod:Top Speed 4 Point Strut
Price: $320 landed from yahoo auctions japan
impressions/comments:
Nice strut. Actually can feel a difference with this strut.
rating out of 5: 3

Mod: Whiteline underbody brace
Price: $285AUD (new)
impressions/comments:
excellent piece for added turn in. Stiffens up the front end. Car feels alot more planted coming into corners with this. Cons- If your car is lowered 2.5" it will scrape everywhere!

Mod: Lightweight Flywheels

Price: $500-$1000 plus install

Comments:
I had a 4.8kg exedy flywheel in my car once.. made little difference.

i moved to a fidanza 3.3kg flywheel (really really light).. made alittle more difference.

stock is 6.1 kg, pretty light already.

light flywheel makes very little difference in our F20C motors due to our heavyish RWD drive train. on, say a b18C, makes a night and day difference however.

it does make the motor more responsive when blipping the throttle for rev matching.
you'll need a lot more sensntivity in your right foot on the track, maintaining weight balance in the car around corners is also more challenging - but yet more rewarding.

you only bother to do a light flywheel when you need to change your clutch.
And if you're only into driving in a straight line, then don't bother with a flywheel. If you're into serious driving, then a flywheel will help, also make it more difficult. The car is already quite hard to manage stock, without having to regulate your rpm with a light flywheel (rise a fall really quick - when you release the gas, the RPMs WILL drop fast, and the car WILL get unsettled).

Rating 3/5 - only worth it when doing a clutch job

Mod: Final Drive (4.44, 4.57, 4.77)

Price: $700 for parts $1k+ for install

Comments:

If you want to mod your car to be a better daily driver, more zip, and actually feel a difference in day-to-day driving, then get a 4.44, 4.56, or 4.77 final drive.

Fuel consumption with higher final drives? it doesn't seem to have too much of an effect, pedal position is really what is going to determine your fuel consumption. I recommend a 4.44 FD to take out the lack lustre bottom end in our cars.

i have heard that this thing is good for gains and price, but hydrolocks VERY EASILY...

well see i had that debate before i went out and bought it...

hydrolock can be abit of a myth. Unless you are driving in a flood and hitting VTEC the chances of your car hydrolocking are slim. What i did when i had my aem v2 was block off the water drain hole because the filter sat directly underneath that.

fatboyz39
30-04-2008, 05:19 PM
Who is stupid enough to vtec in the wet? You can only get hydro lock if the filter is fully wet and you open the throttle to 100%

Modifry DCI - Highly recommended.

Lets you use the dash controls with selected aftermarket head units. Even adds functionality through key combos and speed dependent volume.

Cost: $USD90
Delivery: Pretty damn quick usually and he'll post USPS.
Ease of install: Easy if you're installing a head unit at the same time.

I have the Alpine wired DCI, I notice that there's a slight lag between when i activate the controls on my dash to the command being processed and executed by my headunit...headunit is the Alpine CDA-9855.

Mod: J's Racing Titanium FX60RS Catback Single
Price: $2000+? Dunno...
Comments:
Looks: Nice. Light. Looks good. Blue tip can get dicoloured if car is spitting flames or run hard at the track.
Sound: Not very loud on its own. Without a header the catback will be boomy under deceleration (throttle off). With a header, slightly louder, boominess gone. Add a test pipe for ear splitting, neighbour waking, vtec roar. Anyone that watches BMI will know what this sounds like. Loud burbles and backfires under deceleration.
Rating: 4/5

Mod: J's Racing SPL Ex Manifold
Price: $2000+??? Dunno...
Comments:
Looks: Good when new. Chrome can get dirty when handled. Discolors like mad once installed. Wrap it in exhaust wrap so you won't have to worry about it. Fattest header primaries out of all the JDM headers.
Rating: 5/5

Mod: J's Racing Test Pipe
Price: $200??
Comments: You all know what this is. Pricey for what it is. O2 Sensor bung doesn't line up with the original cat cover. Needed to cut an extra hole in the Cat Cover if you want to use the cover.
Rating: 3/5

Mod: GruppeM Carbon Intake
Price: $2000+
Comments:
Looks: It's carbon fiber and it's bloody huge.
Sound: OMG It's loud. Intake roar is louder than J's Racing FX60RS Catback + Header. But beaten once the test pipe is installed.
Installation: Is a pain. Back pain inducing. Newer S2000 with the temp sensor will need to drill a hole to fit the sensor. Or just leave it hanging and cable tie it somewhere.
Rating: 4/5

Mod: Spoon Venturi Throttle Body, DBW
Price: $700+
Comments:
Seems to help, yet to dyno. Best to reset ECU and let it relearn. Idle goes out the window for the first few weeks.
Easy installation for DBW version, unless you have a GruppeM intake which you need to take off first...
Rating: 4/5

Price: $3000+
Comments:
Hernia inducing for daily city driving. Very bumpy on the road, not recommended for spirited driving on bumpy roads. It can be lowered very very low though (for those that like to slam their cars just for looks).
Track performance is simply awesome.
Note this is installed in a 2007 S2000 with updated suspensions.
Rating: 4.5/5 (Biased cos I don't really care how it drives on the street)

Mod: Endless CC-R Front brake pads
Price: $290 NEW (edw-r)
impressions/comments:The best track pads I have used to date (prev. pads: OEM, Race Brakes RB74, Ferodo DS2500). Temp. rating 150-800 degrees. These pads still stop you on the street but they are extremely noisey, they squeal continuously under light/normal braking loads and are not very friendly towards rotors. On the track I probably won't change to anything else, 12 min sessions on continuous hard braking (in conjunction with Castrol Racing brake fluid) showed no signs of fade at all, they out-lasted my tyres (Dunlop D01Js)...the pads have excellent feel and initial bite, extremely confidence inspiring for those wanting to push their cars to the limit. (rear pads were Ferodo DS2500)...These pads can lock up the front wheels if your not careful applying the brakes (front tyre size used was 225/50/16)
Cons: They chewed through a set of completely smooth set OEM rotors (had 20,000 kms on them from light use with OEM pads), looking at needing them machined asap.
rating out of 5: 5/5 for track, 1/5 for street as they recommend use with r-spec tyres, my guess is with street tyres you'll lock them up in an emergency braking situation.

Mod: Advan a048 (M compound, 205/55/16 F, 225/50/16 R)
Price: ~$380 each NEW
impressions/comments:I had high hopes for these tyres as so many JDM cars are running them, unfortunately, I should have listened to my mechanic before I purchased these. They never felt as good as the D01Js on the track, very disappointing...They didn't feel like they had as much grip and took a long time to warm up properly. I wouldn't purchase these again, they never warmed up sufficiently though mountain runs either. The one place where they were much better than the Bridgestone RE55s was in the wet, on track they gripped very nicely and were confidence inspiring. Another benefit was the extremely smooth transition at the 'break-away' point.
Not so noisy at speed but stiff sidewalls equate to a harsh ride as well on the street.
rating out of 5: 3/5

Mod: Dunlop D01J (S compound, 225/50/16 on OEM 16" rims)
Price: $400 used with 70-80% tread, early 07 build tyres. (Stuckey tyres in Brunswick stocks a lot of these)
impressions/comments:
A bargain. Running the wider tyre at the front gives a lot more braking power, however turn-in suffers and becomes more vague, running such wide tyres on 6.5" wide rims also induces a lot of additional front end body roll. The non-staggered setup suffers from huge oversteer problems, so careful throttle inputs and a lot of counter-steering is needed to push the car on such a setup.
These tyres warm up after about 3/4 of a lap at winton, I used these in a sprint session a while back (standing start laps) and it was very impressive. the tyres are very good in the wet on the street and don't ever make you feel nervous when it rains. With the soft compound, the do start to feel greasy after about 7 or so hot laps at Winton (probably too much for the car to handle anyways).
These tyres warm up properly on mountain runs too, they wear out very quickly though...uncomfortable on the street as all r-spec tyres would be and quite noisy at speed.
rating out of 5: 4.5/5 as I can only presume that brand new ones would be even better.

impressions/comments:
Hopeless. These rotors are not fit for any kind of spirited driving at all, track...forget about it. I didn't even want these but this was all I could find before a track day I was attending last year. They lasted 8,000kms (2 track days and a few mountain runs, I don't drive aggressively on the street at all) rotor thickness is still fine, however with combined use of Ferodo DS2500 pads and Bendix ultimate (OEM Replacement) pads they developed hairline cracks on the face...they have been replaced with the OEM rotors again.

I'm still looking for a rotor that can withstand the CC-R pads, anyone have any ideas?

$300 is for front and rear Ferodos. Is $220 from Vsport front and rear too?
Oh and also: Rolled = Jonathan?

I don't like the carbonetics because initial bite when cold is not good. It needs to be quite warm to work well. And on the street it can be quite dangerous. A few times I had to stamp on the brakes really hard because the car just wasn't stopping.

The DS2500 is a good choice for me since I really cbf changing pads all the time for the street and track. And I hate brake squeal.

oh crap, nah $220 was for the fronts only! Where did you get it for $300 for the whole set? haha that's crazy!

Yes Rolled = Jonathan LOL

What's the temp rating of the carbonetics? Even with the endless CCR being 150-800 they still stop fine when it's cold in the mornings...

haha you know changing pads is just taking the wheel off and then 1 bolt on the caliper, slip the pads out, new ones in, bolt back on and wheel back on? haha doesn't take long...my friend and I changed the front rotors/pads in 30 mins! mmm I don't mind brake squeal, I think it makes the car sound more hardcore! LOL but then no one else knows that

Mine is IR with a Pioneer 9800BT it is fine, same speed response.

I use the DCI more than the brake pedal in my car lol. It is the best mod, if you have changed the headunit.

Ferrari,
im looking at that head unit ...
Does it fit behind the stock audio "door"?

From what i could tell the 9800BT is a US version isnt it (9850BT for Aus)?, does it work fine in Australia (years ago there was problems with spacing of FM stations)

The wired DCI is listed as working with that head unit. Any particular reason i should think of for going to the IR version?

cheers

I was worried it wouldnt fit, behind radio door, but it does. No reason why you should go wireless if it can take wired. Mine functions on FM just not AM stations.

Mod: Mugen Carbon Intake

Price: $1300 New

Performance: 5/5 Picks up cold air from the front of vehicle and has a ram effect as well due to the design of the intake kit.

Install: 2/5 Very hard to install. Takes a few hours. Bonnet needs to be cut out and also plastic cover between front bumper and radiator support for cold air intake.

Overall: You can really feel the difference across the whole rev range with this CAI and response has improved as well.

Overall: Very Loud Intake (close to ITB noise) with more butt gain from mid to high rpm.

Price: $2000++

Performance: 5/5, Looks awesome when new and it does not discolored after installing, retaining the goldish look. Gives more mid and high rpm gain.

Install: 5/5, same difficuly like any other header, nothing special.

Overall: Very Impressed with the build quality, one of the best or the best from all header for s2000 that I've seen plus it gives good hp gain.

The problem is with AM stations. The US uses 10Khz separations, we use 9.

Not sure how often you listen to AM stations but I wouldn't let it stop me buying a head unit from the US.

Mod: Bride Ergo II with bride rail.

Tight fit in the S2000 cabin, rails sit you slightly higher, possibly by 1-2cm. Much more comfortable than stock seats. The fit is very tight, and the sliding ability is not as smooth as stock, and it rubs slightly on the centre console.

Looks awesome, it is black leather, grey center mesh, and red stiching. Matches my FDNR knob, Muzz console with red stiching and Type R shift boot.

Really is a holding monster, would be too small if you have a 34 inch waist and above.

Details: Not really difficult to install, however did struggle to get bonnet to close and possibly should cut small section of bonnet. It took about 3hours to remove and install intake(in workshop). Carbon finish is good but not great.

or u guys prefer to get a sub-com and get it tune up.....

AusS2000
27-04-2009, 04:57 PM
Keep in mind these ECUs are tuned to specific conditions. They kinda expect you to have all I/H/E mods of the manufacturer. And because they are JDM they are tuned for Japanese fuel (higher octane) and JDM engines (higher compression). Whether or not you could get any advantage from them here and without a whole host of supporting mods is doubtful.

I guess by sub-com you mean a piggyback. I've played with the V-AFC and E-manage (pre-Ultimate) and there is not much you can achieve with them. Maybe the E-manage Ultimate or AEM FIC could have some advantage.

Then you might consider the AEM EMS or Hondata standalone. Big investment for little return if you're not going FI though.

Been wanting to get a shift light for awhile now. Quick search on the net pointed me to
ECLIPTECH (http://www.ecliptech.com.au/). Their product the SHIFT-I is just what I was looking for. Progressive shift light, battery voltage indicator, affordable and easy to install. I set the 1st light to come on at 6000rpm and the last light to come on at 8500rpm. Now this thing also doubles as a VTEC ON light! :D

Did the install in a under 2.5 hours, with frequent breaks.
Only 3 wires to connect: Ignition/power, Ground, RPM signal.

h17am
28-04-2009, 10:13 PM
well the shift light now doubles as a vtec light. i set the first light to come on at 6000rpm. so whenever vtec is on, at least 1 of the lights is on. the lights come on progressively from 6000 rpm to 8500 rpm, evenly spaced. after 8500 rpm all 7 LEDs will flash like its on fire.

the great thing is that it has 12 display modes so you can choose how sequence the LEDs light up. And the setpoints are adjustable so you can set it to whatever u want. No engine revving required to set the setpoints too!

Is it hard? No. Just bear in mind that the risk is cutting the wire instead of removing the insulation only. In which case you'd have to solder the wire back.
Do you have to remove wire insulation? Yes. Otherwise what are you connecting to? Plastic isn't a good conductor.

PRICE : $175

WHERE FROM: JDMYard

DESCRIPTION: Accidently stumbled into buying these as a last minute option (as my intended pads never arrived in time for a trackday). They were stable throughout the whole day. The car had completed over 65laps on the one trackday with these pads. There was no brake fade, no noise and little dust considering the amount of braking it had done. Excellent performing pad in street conditions.

Mod: ACRE Formula Titan 0-850 degrees brake pads
with Titanium front brake shims

Details : Excellent pedal feel. Not sure whether its due to the shims or pads as I put them both in at the same time. Pads have a superb bite right from cold start. On track, very consistent braking with no brake fade at all. The shims may have contributed to this as well with better heat shielding.

Pads bite better than the Ferodos 2500 imo but the downside is the noise they make. Very squealy even after applying permatex brake quiet. Another downside is the brake dust generated is not easy to wash off.

Rating : Perfect for street/track if you don't mind the squeals/dust.

DETAILS I bought my one with the resonator removed because the steel wool stuff was coming out from it (i don't know why, but i saw it happen). Its super loud and droney at certain revs. 2300-2800 RPM is okay. You need earmuffs if you want to go for 100kph cruise @ 3500+ rpms. It sounds meaty, and has a rasp @ around 6000rp. Especially sweet in tunnels or driving down between tall buildings. Light weight. Fills the rear muffler openings well. Best to keep a resonator with it!

Actually that's incorrect; with the 4.44 FD, you need to use a multiplier of 1.08(29). The figure of 1.16 you've quoted is needed when making calculations with the 4.77 FD.

Then what does a stock Final Gear run RPM on 100km/h in 6th?

9large
18-09-2010, 04:58 PM
Theoretically, it's about 3,261rpm in 6th using stock gearing, however with friction and wind resistance it's realistically about 3,500rpm.

euromandeluxe
19-09-2010, 01:23 AM
excuse my ignorance if im missing something here, but how would wind resistance and friction cause a change in mechanical gearing? roadspeed and engine speed should be directly linked through gear ratios, right? if roadspeed is staying at 100km/h but revs are at 3500rpm instead of 3261rpm, doesn't some part of the driveline have to absorb those extra revs?

9large
19-09-2010, 10:40 AM
That's a good question. Basically, there are effeciency losses throughout the system from things such as slip and friction. To do the calculations, I essentially, multiply RPM by gear ratio by rotations/km based on tyre geometry. Unfortunately, this doesn't account for effeciency losses. These losses are beyond my capability to measure, but I have estimated them based on some testing which have worked out to be fairly accurate with 4.10, 4.56, and 4.57 FD ratios.

19-09-2010, 12:21 PM
Ahh I see. I guess it didn't make sense in my head because I imagined a similar scenario with a bike - ie. if you're riding at a constant speed means your feet are turning the pedals at a certain rpm, but if you're riding into a strong wind at the same speed your feet don't need to turn the pedals faster, just harder. Given that you've done practical testing I guess slip has a something to do with it. Thanks :)

Huge improvement in braking, likely in part attributed to some air bubbles in brake lines which I found when bleeding brakes after install, my car has a full Honda service history - but no doubt there are slacker mechanics doing things too quickly.

at full stiffness they really change the whole feel of the car, almost no roll, alot different to get catch also. only problem is tyres cant keep up so full potential is yet to be seen.

you don't need the spacers just yet.
only when you start feel shuddering in high rev range. But you get 4 goes at it. wear it down without spacers, with spacers AND then SWAP the driveshafts over, wear it down without spacers again, and then with spacers.

In reply to greek_rambos2k, this link may help clarify a few things: http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/693173-driveshaft-spacer-necessary-for-lowered-car/
In short, it isnt a must- rather a preference. But it is recommended that you do change them. So my answer would be yes..

dlai5552
11-07-2011, 03:24 PM
If you add in the spacers, it's just going to wear out in a new spot. so imo, you don't need them until you start feeling a bit of wear in the driveshafts and then change.

I (unknowingly when I purchased the car) had a set of Eibachs. They were a nice comfy ride.
Do rate for springs.

was probably done by whoever installed the springs, sometimes they hold the shaft
with vice grips and then rattle gun the top bolt if it is being stubborn.

if the body of the shock goes near the scored area on the shaft they will ejaculate (and not in a good way)
