View Full Version : Electrical Problem - Engine not cranking

Hey guys,

just got my engine back from the shop (had a crack welded up)

put her all back together last night, and went to turn her over this arvo and had nothing.

Keep in mind my car has been sitting for the last 6 months. Battery and alternator has been out of the car.

All electicals still work (radio, windows, gauges, headlights (nice strong beam) etc etc etc)

Current state:

12.3 volts across the battery

12.1 volts going into the alternator

0 ohms resistance from the alternator to ground (chassis ground - haven't checked to ground at battery - should be ok though)

12.1 volts at starter motor.

0 volts at starter signal wire when cranking


everything seems fine apart from the start singnal wire. is this dependant on the main relay?? or the PGMFI relay?

Anyhelp would be great guys. I'm soo close to getting my car running again after a long loooooooooooong wait.

yeh........u should have 12V on the starter signal wire when cranking.

It is totally independant of the main relay,it is a straight connection from the ignition key switch to the starter solenoid.

Main relay just supplies power to ECU,injectors,IACV,O2 sensor & fuel pump.

Check your connection plug for the starter signal wire at the shock tower plugs,make sure in tight & secure.

Also make sure the ground strap on the gearbox from battery/chassis is clean & secure.

Dont worry about checking fuses,u would have no ignition at all if fuse was blown.

do you know which wire in the plugs it is?? and what shock tower it is at??(driver or passenger)??

i think its a green ish wire at the starter.

Its usually a black/white wire bigger than the rest of the wires.

its at the drivers side shock tower,usually in a 2 pin plug with the dizzy power wire.Dizzy power wire is same size & usually black/yellow so dont confuse the 2 .

Pull this plug apart & see if your getting 12V to this point when in start position on key.

Just one other thing,does your car have a clutch switch(i think its only US cars that got it)? ie do u have to press in clutch before u can start car?

i figured it out though.

hadn't driven my car in ages and my car alarm is too high tech. :o:o:zip:

embarassing thats for sure. I could have been driving my car an hour ago!!!

lmao i was gonna say...

this happen to me too!
The immobilizer was turned on but couldnt hear the warning because the siren was off lol
