View Full Version : EK4 build

Hey guys,

About a month ago I came across a guy who owns a ek4 civic. He told me that he had owned the car since he first purchased it in 1996. He then proceeded to tell me that the car got regular services, all by Honda. However, about 10,000kms ago, the car got its major service, and therefore had it's timing belt replaced. 10,000kms later, he was driving on the gateway motorway, when the timing belt snapped, and the engine pooped itself.

Bad luck, right!? One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I therefore bought the car off this man, and decided to build a fairly mild, yet fun car.

Duy (Barefootbonzai) had recently done an engine conversion (brother's car is a CXi) on my brothers ek1, using the JDM B16A2. And without a doubt, the work he performed was excellent. VERY impressed. No problems whatsoever.

So I had decided to go along the same path. JDM B16A2 sourced, ordered and delivered, all within 3 weeks.

Below are some pics of the car as it is now.

The set-up will be exactly this:

- JDM B16A2
- HSD coilovers
- 2.5" mandrel bent. exhaust, headers, hi-flow cat etc. - Mugen replica headers with Skunk2 mega power system
- 16" black wheels
- Eurocarbon carbon intake

All the plastic strips will be painted when the car is running.

Future mods may include more engine-focused bits.

The engine should hopefully be going in this week, so I will be posting plenty more pics up. I'm planning on having this car on the road as I want it within the next 3 weeks.

I'll be selling anything off the old engine ppl may need. Rims will also be for sale. PM me if you want to know anything.

Any suggestions welcome.

Sounds like a good project.Don't see many red ones around.
Regarding the engine, since your doing a swap anyway the B18c would have been more worth while personally.
The EK4 is too heavy for 1.6..but depends what your goal is I suppose.

I wanted a fairly mild car, and the budget was kept to something which I was happy with. I looked into the B18 option, however as I did not plan for doing this project (convinced to do the same after my brother did his) I kept the budget to something which suited me, thus going with the b16 option.

Duy, im about to get an anxiety attack! lol.. busting to hear the verdict

28-04-2008, 06:06 PM
Getting rid of it means u spray the boot

Imo looks better without and while ur spraying the boot get rid of the rear wiper

Good luck with it all hope it all works out for ya

Aleksi
28-04-2008, 06:19 PM
Yea, im more leaning towards getting rid of it. And yes, good point, get rid of the wiper too.

Anyone know how much approximately I'm looking at to get this done?

.k.
28-04-2008, 06:41 PM
imo get rid of it but keep it by all means if you like it i just think its weird and out of place =S

and im guessing it'll cost a few hundred for a respray - most likely less if you can do prep yourself though (but feel free to correct me anyone on this one)

Goodluck with everything and be sure to update the thread with more pix

yeah i hate the mid spoilers. you should invest in a type r spoiler i got one and they are hell pimpin.

i do need to get rid of my wiper tho. i guess im half way there since some ****head bent the shit out of the wiper arm

28-04-2008, 08:12 PM
get rid of the spoiler, go one step better and get a ek9 rear hatch thingy.

Deano_EK
28-04-2008, 08:12 PM
Mid spoiler looks horrid, mine came with one when i bought it, when i get all my paint work fixed up im having it removed, as well as the rear wiper and possibly the badge, still undecided about the honda badge though.

yea, I wouldn't go removing the wiper, it's just cop bait. half my skyline mates cop a fine every week for removing theirs. But to do the wing any more than a few hundred is too much, if your on the north side I can suggest a few places.

28-04-2008, 09:22 PM
hrmms if the cars an ek4 already why are u getting another b16a? its only rated at slightly higher hp? im sure with that money you could invest in some cams etc etc. and the car would be more fun to drive?

vinnY
28-04-2008, 10:46 PM
read it properly dude
timing belt snapped
chances are it costs as much to repair as buying the new jdm motor

Aleksi
28-04-2008, 10:55 PM
As per thread, i didn't want to spend as much as i would need to spend to get the b18.

Ok, so ill def get rid of the spoiler, all in good time.

Will post up pics at the end of the weekend or start of next week, when the engine, wheels and coilovers are in.

B20 from a CR-V is B-series and could work out cheaper than the in-demand B16's and B18C's.

Nick.

Ok! So, car got picked up and delivered to Barefootbonzai last night.

Agreed!

But also some guy on US honda tech sells the plugs to exact colour codes for around 10 bucks for 3-6 i think (though the plain ones imho would be better band for buck)

02-05-2008, 01:31 AM
problem with removing the spoiler is that the screw holes may be slightly bent outwards as the screws will have forced the medal one way or another to keep the spoiler on
just keep it on until you can afford to get it removed and the holes shaved
otherwise find another wing-less rear hatch :)

Aleksi
02-05-2008, 03:43 PM
Ok, so exhaust is now booked in at 999Automotive.

Mugen replica headers & Skunk2 mega power exhaust

Dyno'd before exhaust install, and then dyno'd again after install, to get real power gain figure. I think that's excellent, and something I'm sure a lot of people would like to see when they're spending their money.

Counting down the hours until I pick the car up from BfB!!

dovla
02-05-2008, 03:53 PM
I know I will get mine put on a dyno before and after. This way you know what you have spent your hard earned money on. + That's a sweet setup. "Mugen replica headers & Skunk2 mega power exhaust"

rubber grommets? i got mine from bunnings
theres usually in the screw/bolt section near the bottom shelves, just have to look harder because theres only 4-5 different ones to choose from
its like $3.50 for a few of about 3-4 for the blanking one thats fit the small holes of the spoiler

Hey guys, sorry for no update. I've been busy all day with getting this thing registered and then ran out of time to take pics etc. However, tomorrow I have all day off.

Tomorrow I will be posting pics up of the car with coilovers in, wheels on, carbon intake in, and rear spoiler off. So, keep an eye out for pics..should be around midday I think.

Thanks kraiye!!! Champ. I had a quick look in supercheap the other day, they have little rubber grommets there, so depending on how big the holes are, that's what I'll be getting in the morning.

Aleksi

alright! SO, spoiler is off, wheels are on, new shift boot and knob are in, and carbon intake is going in in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the feedback ppl.

Tomorrow I'm planning on taking some nice clear pics of the car as it didn't work out too well yesterday.

The plans from here are to paint the grey plastic strips (in 2 weeks), tint the windows (nice and dark next week) and full exhaust (headers and all in 3 weeks time, through 999automotive).

After that, I'm unsure.. However, next Wednesday night I'm heading down to Willowbank with my brother (b16 also) and another friend of mine (XR5 turbo).

So anyone who wants to come along, we'll be there for sure.

.k., I got the gear knob and shift boot new off ebay US. It's an authentic Honda shift boot, but I doubt the gear knob is authentic.

I've got a red Ek4 aswell and i just got a genuine SiR front lip for mine. It was $130 from Highway Honda (Underwood). They had to order it in, but it only took 3 days.

Just referring to a post i saw earlier on

It's referred to as an SiR lip because in other countries, mainly japan, our VTI-R's are named "SiR's" and the SiR lip is standard option

here our standard option is the Honda Access Lip, not the 'SiR lip'

looking good guys. you boys got your headers and exhaust on yet?

Aleksi
15-05-2008, 11:52 AM
Thanx bfb! Vlad got his headers and exhaust done about 1 and half weeks ago. Sounds really good. 92kw atw now (up from 86)

Still waiting on mine to arrive though. They used the last Skunk2 exhaust on his, and waiting for the new shipment to arrive. They said hopefully next week or the week after.

and your point is? every dyno reads differently, and should only be used as a tuning tool.

The regular brissy meet up is on sunday arvo at mt cootha at 5. Should come for a drive and show it off a bit

Aleksi
17-05-2008, 01:07 PM
SHOGUNOVDDRK, thanks heaps for that mate. Will definitely keep you posted

98vtir, that's a pretty good outcome, 95kw atw. I'm so proud of you :o FYI, quarter mile will tell you how fast your 95kw atw car is.

02gzm, thanks for that. I actually may pop up there tomorrow for a bit.

lol no point really, I was just putting it out there to get some feedback. As I saw in Aleksi's post his is up from 86 to 92 from putting headers and exhaust on so I was wondering why mines higher and is basically stock.

Aleksi - I haven't taken it down the qtr mile yet but really want too. I'll drag my mate out to willowbank one night with his S13 RB20 conversion cause were curious what that runs aswell

18-05-2008, 07:01 PM
every dyno is diffrent 98vtir mate... i think that the dyno you put your STOCK b16a on reads high... 95kw stock with a panel filter is not correct.. high 80's sounds more like it..

car looks awesome mate, come a long way in a very short period of time. Cant wait to get my all my mouldings colour coded again ( person that owned the car before me tried himself, the quality is about as good as getting a kid do to it with a texter ) and also to get rid of my horrid mid spoiler.

why do some ek4 have that stupid mid wing? mine didn't have one was it an option

Aleksi
27-05-2008, 01:36 PM
I have no idea, if it was an option, i don't know why anyone would get it...However, that was 10 years ago..?

May be it was an option on later models, and not on earlier models?

Deano_EK
27-05-2008, 03:07 PM
Mines a built late 95 but classed as a 96 and its still got one?

Good work i got one last week, You going to have it painted since you had your side skirts painted.

mine suits my black side skirts so i will be leaving mine black

27-05-2008, 11:07 PM
Yea, I think I'll get it painted this week, hopefully.

Aleksi

Question: Do I get the lip painted or leave it?

I'm leaning more towards leaving it.

http://image-cache.boostcruising.com/database/members/files/Aleksi20080528120644pslfile1.jpg (http://image-cache.boostcruising.com/members/showimage.php?dbpic=31243)

Alexx
02-06-2008, 02:24 PM
leave it for sure. i think the car will have a little too much red if it gets colour coded aswell. It matches the colour of the plates and wheels as it is now.

get yourself a ctr grille and headlights (you can diy them both) and i reckon the car will be complete visually

Gio
02-06-2008, 02:38 PM
yeah i agree with alex, leave it that colour.

ek4-guy

I'd paint it now that you done the side skirts

Actually if i was you i'd get rid of those side skirts and go back to black ones so you can leave the lip black

Aleksi
02-06-2008, 06:08 PM
Thanks guys. Actually, I just DIY'd the front grill on the weekend. I had to cut out the Honda badge (black plastic area) and fit the mesh. I'll post some pics up to show, as soon as weather is better.

ek4-guy, thanks for your opinion, but I just paid to get the moulds and skirts painted. I didn't like the black look, but I think the lip stands out. In a good way.

innozent
02-06-2008, 06:16 PM

Aleksi

Gio, what do you need?

luke, thanks for the feedback. yeah, lip fits perfectly. No need to take the front bar off at all. just make sure you have enough space under the front to get the screws in.

Ok, as the previous owner just left the car sitting in the sun on the side of the street (for about 6months), some of the left hand side of the car is a little oxidized. I tried to buff it out, but no luck.

So, I'm getting the left guard, mirror, bonnet and grill painted next week.

For a damn good price too ;)

Definitely have to stay away from anyone who isn't qualified. lol

Fogarty bodyworks at Geebung is the place I've been going to for the last 5 years, and they're always best on price, time and quality is really good.

I was actually really surprised when he quoted me to paint bonnet, grill, left guard and mirror. I was expecting double that.
