Hey everyone how u doing,
I just bought my rotating assembly and other stuff from dyno-flo.com and the guy there was telling me some rep told him there is not really a need for the ARP bolts because the stock b18c's are just as strong if not stronger, he asked if i would like anything else instead but i told him to just send them too me anyway, Is there anyone out there running 13:1 cr or similar on a b18c with stock head bolts or experience with the matter. I know honda makes strong stuff from factory but not sure bout this one.
Thanks people.
Please nothing about how unsafe it is to run that cr, this is gonna be a fully built engine, forged everything, port/polish, full valvetrain upgrade, aggresive cams, sleeved, all the rest. Thanks

If your going to mod your engine to that extent then go headstuds rather than bolts.

yeah i thought so, just found it odd that someone who was selling me the products was advising me maybe not to buy them, thats the only thing that got me thinking u know.

the thing is.....
honda head bolts are quite strong from factory, and any aftermarket bolt can only be marginally stronger, its just a bolt.
if i was running that high compression you are aiming for,for real strength you need to go to head studs.
studs hold parts together in pure compression without the high stress points caused by a bolts wind up (slight twisting and stretching of the bolt) as you torque it down.
studs also torque more accurately than bolts
If you want extra security you can replace not just the head bolts but also the main cap bolts with studs.
who knows, its a always a gamble as you pump up the compression, you could be fine with just stock bolts, the bolts you bought, or studs....me personally id go the studs while its easy to do.
do it once,do it right

how is headstuds different than head bolts?
EDIT: in physical form and how they are used/applied/tighten?

Sorry guys, not sure if you knew what i meant but i meant factory bolts vs arp studs.

i knew what you meant...i think haha...just needed you to know that studs are what you really should be using building a honda engine that hard

how is headstuds different than head bolts?
EDIT: in physical form and how they are used/applied/tighten?
headbolt - there is a hole in your block, with thread, the bolt goes through the head and tightens down into the thread, holding the head down.all bolts get some amount of stretching when they are tightened down, not noticeable on small low load bolts, but for head bolts there is definite stretching of the bolt when it is torqued down, this is why some headbolts are 1 time use bolts only,as they get stretched and if you reuse them you cant trust the torque that you put on them is correct.
headstuds - a stud (threaded rod, like the wheel studs you put your wheel nuts on) is inserted into the block, the head is then placed onto the block,so the studs go through the holes in head where the bolts would normally go,you then tighten a nut with washer (varies with application, but for ease lets just keep it at this) down on the stud, this holds the head down.....headstuds are better, they dont experience the twist and stretching that bolts do....
bolts are fine for normal engines, but for high performance engines studs are where the game is at
