vtec solenoid buddy.
if your engine has a goldish cap thing located near your head/rocker cover then voila.

1) you can try hit VTEC in reverse.
2) If car doesn't have VTEC... just pour some in your engine, and over your tyres... and voila!

no it doesnt have to be gold, they do weather with time.
Why dont you put the first 5 digits of your engine number here and im sure one of us can help you... since it is a civic you will be looking for the following sequences
1) B16a
2) D18y1/8 (I THINK)
vti coupe doesnt have vtec written on the cover. the eg vti does.

No. I have a Y4 and its is far from VTEC lol, not exactly very fast or performing. Found in GLi's. If it has VTEC then it would no longer be called a Y4
