hi all! im thinking of buying a 2000 cxi or gli hatchback, manual. im planning on doing it up..possibly doing a motor swap in the future. can i get some ideas on what sort of first basic mods that i can put on a stock car like that? cheers!

Mate the cxi and the gli have the same engine as u may be aware of, its the d16y4 non vtec engine. Its not really worth modding unless u turbo it. My advice would be to start saving for a b16a/b, or b18c7/r. The d16y4 has no gutts at all and isnt worth modding if u want to gain power, good fuel efficiency though:thumbsup:

is there a thread on this forum regarding importing of motors?
id like to import one from japan..or is it possible to source one
from local wreckers?

Cxi's are great as a daily, really good on fuel. Modding wise, you're going to have to fork out a great deal of money. I've found out recently the Cxi doesn't support a front swaybar, so you'll have to change the lca's to support one.

Both Cxi and Gli dont come with rear swaybar. You also dont get a taco in the Cxi. If you had a chance to get a Gli i'd go for it.

Engine swapping wise. Here in WA engine must be newer than the car to be able to register it. So options would have to be year 2000+ Probably looking at a 2000 model itr front cut would be worth it. You could possibly find a wreck and salvage the suspension bits and engine.

I've installed a apexi rsm to compensate the taco missing and ive got an em1 interior as it has cupholders and arm boot etc :D

also, ive got catback and headers on the d16 and it's abt the same as a gsi teg

i probably might have to go for the gli then coz im gonna use it as a daily..
im planning to install an Ek9 cluster..would there be any problems with that?

yes. redline is different on ek9 taco compared to gli

why would u want an ek9 cluster in ur gli anyway, gli comes with a taco just not the cxi

i have a 2000 GLi sedan, good daily drive, and great on fuel. Not worth doing too much apart from turbo if you really wanted to. Its awsomely slow  Still a great overall car though. Instead of doing engine swaping/conversion go look for a VTi instead.

whats the maximum rim size can you install? are 16's just right?

16 if you came with 14s, the police up here look at the door placard and see the size it should come with and only allow a 2" increase

16s are perfect, I have 17s on my coupe and I personally find them too big for the geometry of the car

Wheels & sussy's would be my first option

If ure going to look at doing an engine swap, my suggestion is to save a little more and get an EK4 seens as though its already got a b16a in it, will save u money in the long run, plus u get a better interior, sunroof, standard alloys etc etc otherwise if ure still set on doing a conversion get the GLi, its got the tacho cluster, rear disc brakes, and full eletrics.

go for the EK4 (VTI-R)
they are like only $2000 more than the GLI nowadays

they are like only $2000 more than the GLI nowadays

where? most are still 10k for a hi mileage and up whereas a gli is like 5-6k

so 10K for a EK 1 with 80K KM with 15s was a rip off ?

nah mate thats around the average price considering the mileage its done is quite low.
an ek4 with that kind of mileage would fetch around 12-13K atleast..
