View Full Version : My exhaust stinks

Ok it's been there for a while now, but not when i bought the car... i think it was a while after i changed my oil and filter, but not sure.

So the thing is, after a while, my exhaust will smell of rotten eggs or something in those lines.

Funny it may be, but it's definitely noticeable in a confined space like garage and i'm worried it may be something more serious.

I've read the forums for the topic, and no there was no plastic bag on the tip.

I checked all the essentials and they are all fine e.g Oil, coolant, power steering fluid etc.

Can anyone help me out...

well usually when u do an oil change, u might get a bit of oil drips/oil onto the exhaust piping.. so it could be that burning off.

how long has the smell been around?

4 months or so, i never gave it much attention to be honest... It hasn't gotten worse or better.

I'm thinking of changing the oil and getting a genuine honda filter this time, maybe it will fix it up.

Could be brand/type of fuel.Or possibly cat needs replacing.

It's definetly not fuel cause i have pumped them all brands from Shell to BP and same smell.

Btw, could it be my brake pads? I need to change them soon but the smell was definetly coming from the exhaust.. so hmmm

Look at the cat, maybe it's the problem.

The CAT is the exhaust system?

Does a mechanic need to check it or can i just check for little signs of problems?

Fart?
Dont think its the oil.
My car before i changed headers and cat smelt like fart not too bad but newer cars smell like fart rather than older cars.
Especially in confined space too.

But, what type of petrol are you running?

*my opinion i think its normal*
please correct me guys.

I'm running BP Ultimate now.

My car is 2004 Luxury, so definitely not new.. but less than 65,xxx under the clock though.

Normally it has to do with the level of sulphur in your fuel... But since you have mentioned that you have been using Ultimate, try swapping to another brand... If the problem still persists, that is another sign of your cat con failing and it's time for a new one.

Are they expensive to replace?

catalytic convertors range from 250-400+ depending what brand or no name from exhaust shop, from what i've heard not many bolt on cats available for euro so you will need a metal workshop to fabricate the bolt on brackets.

After market cats are not that expensive, it's the materials for the pipe and flanges that cost money.

My metal cat + 3 inch piping + flanges + O2 sensor port costs me 400 bucks all up

It's probably not the best place for it to get checked, but they seemed to go through everything etc. Car was still going strong months later until we sold it ;)

Though now I am getting worried about my car doing it :S

I realised one thing that after a long drive (approx 1.5 hours) and coming back to the same garage, i could barely smell it... it was faint, but not as strong.

The time i said it was strong, the car only drove 15 minutes..

does that have something to do with it??

If the cat fails, you will get a CEL light when the secondary exhaust gas sensor picks up the excess fuel in the exhaust.
