Hey dudes/ettes
Looking to get some info on import rules and pricing on cars ect in Oz,i noticed someone mentioning compliance so im just wondering how it works if you wanna import or if there are any restrictions?
Also whats the deal with tax and insurance over there?
Quick insight into how its done here -
No regulations on what can or cant be imported or from what country ect,the main problems are tax's when importing.
Say you buy a car from wherever for 10k,Upon arrival here you pay 10% of the 10k for customs, then 21% VAT ontop of the total figure, thats some nice dollars to the goverment for nothing right there!
The killer is then whats known as VRT (vehicle registration tax) which is needed in order to get a reg number,at present the price you pay depends on engine size
up to 1400cc 22.5% of OMSP
1401cc - 1900cc 25% of OMSP
> over 1900cc 30% of OMSP
The OMSP (open market selling price) is data accumilated by car dealers ect ect,Rough price for you a 1999 DC2 retails for 19,740 Austrailian dollars,a 2001 DC5 is 31,256 and they would be both cheap examples!
From July Vrt will be based on Co2 emmissions,Honda vtecs seem to land in the highest category which will be 36% vrt.
So once paid your car is assigned a reg plate with year and county name onboard.BUT legally before driving your supposed to pay road tax (if you dodge it for more than 3 weeks and the cops stop you, they can seize your car if they want)
Road Tax is based on engine cc,the higher the cc the more you pay.
For a 1.8 its 871 AUD per year,anything over 3.0 litres is a flat rate of 2451AUD.
You still cant legally drive the car on the road then untill its insured (im led to believe insurance is included in tax in Aus?) Insurace is like the lottery here, literally all honda vtecs are in the highest brackets with some companies refusing to insure them point blank, depending on age and driving expierence your talking a minimum of 1500AUD up to 5000AUD per year fully comp.
Once all thats sorted you can legally drive on the road,Altho you also need to have the car NCT'd (national car test) which basically is the car gets a going over by "mechanics" with a series of tests to make sure its road worthy, the test is 80 dollars and covers you for 2 years but if anything fails the test you must have it fixed before being issued with a cert.
You can basically dodge the nct and tax once your not pulled over, even then you can talk your way out of it but its likely the car will be impounded if your pulling the piss.
So thats driving here in a nutshell!
