With no warning my mates 5 speed 97 Honda Civic Gli (202,000 kms) would not shift into gear after started. Neutral was all he had and if he tried to shift into reverse it made a bad grinding noise. While the car is off he can depress the clutch, put it into 1st and then start it. This works while shifting up through all 5 gears but as soon as I have to slow down and shift down it lets me get back into 1st or 2nd but will not shift any higher after that. It will also begin spuddering and die even with the appropriate amount of acceleration given to the gas pedal. Even with 202,000 kms it's been a great car, very dependable. His taken good care of it and maintained a regular maintenance schedule. Does the clutch need replaced or can this problem be corrected in a simple and less costly way?

Thanks Guys

hmmmm I would check the master cylinder that has happened to my mate also he told me he just replaced that... you prob would have to re-bleed the cluth aswell. Then it should work just fine after that if that isn't it i don't think that it would be the clutch sounds more like the whole transmission needs to be rebuilt cause if it was the clutch the clutch wouldn't let it go into any of the gears anytime.

Hope this helps dude keep us updated please

It would seem as if your clutch has gone kaput, best thing to do in this case is to take it to a good mechanic and get it checked out. But it sounds like you'll be going the way of a new clutch, or possibly an adjustment if you're very lucky.
