View Full Version : When do you upshift?

Hi guys,

Just out of curiosity, for manual owners, i was wondering at what revs do you guys generally upshift. Assuming the engine has already warmed up.

Since purchase, i've been up-shifting at around 2600-3000 rpm. At which point, it starts getting a little loud. I've also noticed that I always have the slowest launch at the lights. I was up lined up against my dads 1998 odyssey and he flogged me. What's worse is my dad is an ultra conservative driver too. He'll never rev past 3k unnecessarily, sticks to speed limits and accelerates like a granny.

Does anyone else feel that the power output in 1st gear seems to plateau between 2.5k and 4-5k?

Your advice is much appreciated

EDIT: My 07 MT euro is stock btw

When i'm driving normally i upshift at approx.same RPM(2600-3000).BTW i've got Icebox and Comptech headers which do make a difference in power in the low-mid RPM.

Thats what the rev limiters for. Tells me when to upshift. Usually about 7600rpm. Oh that and the screaming.

I agree with that, 1st is a bit of a dog

its alright rolling, but off the line it seems to make lots of noise but you look around and your not really going anywhere in a hurry lol :(

3k rpm is about my usual shifting point

Your dad's odyssey is quicker at partial throttle and low RPM because he has an auto. The torque convertor sacrifices revs for a bit more torque. Also he wastes less time by having the auto shift for him, which is quicker than your shift speed. Drive an auto Euro, it feels faster when driving sedately.

Hehe.....I don't have a manual, but, If I did it would be just before rev limiter kicked in............red line baby ;)

Suntzu and I have the same brain........lol

Actually since i did reflash/header/cat/intake I can change about 1500 rpm less than i used to for the same acceleration. No shit. It pulls that much more in the lower band. Dyno time. :)

The only time you can't reach 7000rpm is in 50 zones and during school zones. :)

Power output plateuas between 2.5k and 4-5k? You are embarassing all manual euro owners out there mate. :pLearn how to drive a 4cyl Honda - you need revs and to rev it to 7000rpm. Also give it more revs from take off when engaging the clutch.

Of course your dad in his oddysey is going to beat you if you change gears between 2600-3000rpm. Where did you learn to drive a manual - in a diesel or something?

change gears when accidentally bouncing off the limiter cause the last 1000rpm happens too quick:p

For a second I thought you were referring to dumping the clutch at 3000rpm! It doesn't really seem as though you're getting much out of the 6MT over the 5AT.

As yfin suggested, 4 cylinder Honda engines mated to manual transmissions are made to be revved. Your driving style indeed seems more suited to something with loads of low range torque.

Even my previous set of wheels got driven harder than what you're describing and it had around 400nm at the 2000rpm mark!

My love of the 6MT in the Euro was one of the major reasons to buy it (although in terms of gear ratios I'd prefer a slightly taller 1st gear and slightly shorter 2nd gear).

Maybe I'm just a hard driver but I generally release the clutch with around 1500rpm-2000rpm on board and then upshift anywhere between 4000rpm and 7200rpm. I find 1st gear to get me close to 60km/h very quickly. I prefer to get a few more revs on board before shifting to 2nd otherwise 2nd feels way too sluggish.

:honda:HONDA'S ARE MADE TO BE REVVED!! :honda:

Come off topic but shifting, i had a 1vs1 with my mates 5AT before down a straight couple years ago.

Has anyone had a problem with shifting from 1st to 2nd when revving hard, like it wouldnt slot into gear? any fix for that?

Yeah but that would completely abolish my great fuel consumption figures. I do occassionally rev it up to 4-5k on first, only cause the vehicle behind is tailing so close to me, it pisses me off.

Not diesel though, I picked up my manual skills in a ute.

I think i know what my problem is; i should really take off the fuel consumption gauge when i'm driving. It breaks my heart when i see it hit 30L/100km. LOL

Sorry but if someone tails you like that just slow down even slower... just my opinion. As its not your fault.

It doesn't hurt consumption that much. I gave my Euro a nice workout on every drive once it was warmed up. In stop start traffic my consumption was still averaging 10 litres per 100kms and that was revving out to 7000rpm on each drive. Driving pleasure is more important than saving yourself $1 on fuel per week. May as well just buy a Hyundai if you only rev to 5000 rpm in the Euro and even then you say 5000rpm is only occassionally. You can't complain that your dad flogged you in an Odyssey if you drive like a granny!

Believe me i do. I know i shouldn't, but i drive 10km/hr slower than the speed limit when someones up my ass. It's only on occasion when i get ticked off

i have that same 1st to 2nd problem sometimes. not sure if im releasing the clutch too soon or what but it sounds like the gears crunch and breaks my heart.:( i take it easy after that sussing out if i broke anything..:o
need a taller first gear, the 6MT

My 5 speed Auto is usually in D (most of the time anyway - normal driving) - between 2500-3500 RPM is when I let the auto shift up( in D) ; in the tiptronic mode - usually around 3500 RPM -4500 RPM .

hm i dump round 3.5 lol

usually shift from 2 to 3 depending if i need speed lol (if on hill etc).
then usually round my area driving i just stay in 6th with no power lol and just roll around =P

ROFL lucky you, i rarely use 6th gear at all.

punch a hole in the foot area and do fred flinstones style run with your feet.

Most of the time, if I hit vtec in 2nd gear, I would have broken the speedlimit... always 60-70 limit around my drive to work. :(

usual shift is 2.5-3k RPM adn quickly go to 5th and let it roll with the momentum, downshift back to 4 if I want to step on the accelerator

Ive dumped it at 6.5 once, didnt sound too nicely but it hooked on and kept up with a prelude for about 50m before the prelude just destroyed my life...but eh what can u do, sports coupe against a FAMILY SEDAN :P

put it in neutral while slowly creeping forward then dump it... with ur foot ever so slightly on the brake...u cant do it fully stopped with ur foot off the break, took alot of tries...
it works trust me, u can also blow gearboxes in 1997 318i's, not knowing from experience or anything... :D

What you have described is not going to make the car faster as even from 3500rpm the wheel hop is violent.

2.5-3k dump is good enough, as too much wheel hop and loosing traction is not going to speed you up too much
