View Full Version : Re001 june sale at BTC
just got a bridgestone tyre centre insert in this weekend's paper, not sure if it's nationwide or just WA but I would think it's a nationwide june sale.
they are selling the 195/50R15 RE001 for $119, with $7.50 a tyre cashback for RAC members and you get a free gift for a set of 4 premium tyres ie walkie takie or mp3 player.
not sure if they still made in jp or aust made now, but at such price you can pay a lot more elsewhere and end up with a much worse tyre!
I'm getting a set while this deal it's on to replace my soon to be one year old set on my EG.
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8677/mf80uu5.th.jpg (http://img135.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mf80uu5.jpg)
Interestingly, thats the price I got my RE001, 205/50R15 a couple of months back. Fitted and balanced, and that wasn't on sale....
that's a great deal indeed e240, enquired the same 205/50R15 earlier thru Bob Jane and BTC here in Perth and got quited $175-185 and trying to get another $10 off it's like extracting tooth already. Looks like I need to buy my next set of tyres from your local tyre shop and get them sent over to Perth, even after $100 freight and another $50-60 fitting and bal i'll still be ahead. And btw was your new set of re001 made in Aust or Jp?
what amazes me it's that there could be 30%, 40% or more price variance with the same tyre chain at the same time as other members show from their posted quoted prices on the tyre rec thread; and the tyre shops insist they make very little $.
bought a pair of 195/60R14 GIII for my old 325i the other day, cost $129 fitted at bob jane after a bit of haggling. Some shops quoted me as high as $165.

re01R is top of the line street tyre. its very soft compound and no real street tyre will come close
re001 is half of a s03 and half of a g3.. they've comvined the 2 tyres so the tyre is quite good
as for the RE55S, this is a semi slick.. takes a while to warm up but once it does, its pretty awesome..
you'd be paying in excess of 250 per corner on re01R and re55S as compared to re001 for less than half price

now i dunno which tyre to go for ... this one so cheap .. i was planning on going S drive but i mite change my mind now lol
stay away from the S drive, got a set fitted in 195/55R15 for our dc2r, highly dissappointing given a premium tyre from Yokohmama ( came dead last in EVO mag tyre test just year, wish the tyre test came out b4 the purchase); even the GIII is a few notches above it. Re001 streets ahead.
only good thing about them is the quietness, good ride and less rolling resistance than most tyres in the same category.

they are made in aus.
you're right.
Just noticed the aussie flag next to the price tag of all the re001 in the btc june specials catalog bar the 245/45R18 size so looks like they are getting the whole line up manufactured locally bar the exotic sizes for now.
Will get a set myself anyhow and let you guys knows if there is any discernable differences in terms of finishing/quality control compared to the japanese made re001.

Going down to Vic BTC to check the offer out. By the way, is it balanced and fitted? I went to the BTC website and i think this offer is nation wide. Just not sure if its balanced and fitted and inclusive of everything. I will be checking out k-marts around VIC as well. Will keep you guys updated
yeah definately fitted and balanced, and an extra $7.50 off with you have a RACV membership card. They might well charge for disposal of your old tyres at $1.50-2.50 each though.

probably, i was quoted 130-140ish for 195/50r15 but it went up 2 160 for 195/55r15
word of advice, go the 195/55. the 50 has a lower load rating. check your car and see what the factory recommendations are.

would expect to pay $180-200 at a BTC or Bob Jane here in Perth, but e240 got his 205/50R15 from Hornsby BTC for $120 or so when it wasnt on special so it might be worth you buying a set and freight it to Melbourne and fit locally. $60 a tyre big diff, assuming they sell the tyres to you at that price.

yer it is quite a big difference, im also getting a 4 wheel alignment and the BTC im going to is the only place that has actually done it for me properly, everywhere else has either left me massive camber or steering wheel not straight etc .. this is the only place that has done it properly out of like 4-5 other places ive tried around my area. I could call up other places n ask around and probabaly get a cheaper price by ease but i asked wat the best they could do for me is (also said i got quoted from another place 180 but that was a yoko dealer) and they said they do 180 .. so im just gonna go there to save me the trouble of goin to another place to get tyres then drive there wid new tyres n get alignment i can get it all done at once.

rowville, i like it there, taken 2 cars there and both turned out alot better (which should be the average standard for every tyre place meaning everything is actually straight n stuff) other places ive been all had either camber or something not aligned and even if aligned, the steering wheel is not straight etc .. every tyre place that u go into for a alignment as a standard should be makin cars wheels n steering straight as rowville has for me, i just dun get y some places can give ur car bak and have a steering wheel off centre o.0

i dont think it will be the same for 205/50/15. It should be the orignal price. Anyone here has a RACV insurance cover? Maybe we cann all arrange and go together to get the extra $$ off the discounted price as well!
not sure how they do it over in your state, I normally borrow a fren's RAC membership card when I buy tyres from BTC or Bob Jane.
Just got my re001 fitted today, paid $446.00 for the set after the RAC discount.
Got them fitted at BTC in West Perth where it used to called Burcrodes tyres centre years back. Great ppl to deal with and it's one of the few upmarket BTC Select shop in Perth. They even accept American Express where some BTC don't accept it, reluctant or want to charge a surcharge. Will buy all future Bridgestone tyres from them from now on.
My set of Re001 still made in Jp and it's an old batch made in 14th week of 2007. Bought my orig set in Aug 07 that was made in the 7th week of 2007 which I paid $129 each so I really cant complain about this set.
The manager did confirm that most sizes are now made in Australia as they brought the moulds over to their Aust factory, presumbly the rubber compound would remain the same.

10 mths later they still grip very well, and tread is down to about 5mm instead of the 7.5mm brand new. They seem to be the sweet spot for me at this tread depth for this tyre, with tread flex minimised and less weight on the tyre ( prob 500g less on a 7.5-8kg tyre ).
Interestingly when I checked the rubber hardness with my durometer the new one is actually slightly harder by 2 point! Will check again once they've done about 500-1000km and see if the new tyre gives a softer reading. I didnt expect them to stay soft after one year of usage and my car is always exposed to the elements on my driveway w/out any shelter and gets full sun daily.

ive had mine for...probably 8 months and they are very nice.
2 track days , and 4 or 5 1/4 events plus 250+km per week on a lowered car and not showing any major signs of wear. Very good tyre even on the track.
PS be careful for the first 500 ks or so , i lost control a few times in mid corner lift off (light at medium speed) , nothing bad just alittle shock. They will bed in nicely tho and last quite some time :)

on integra fat fives on the civic so the rolling diameter stays very similar. they'll be aussie made so i'll compare them against the S drives which are japanese made.

If the RE001 you are getting are the latest stock they'll be Aust made, and if they are old stock like the ones I bought they'll be the Jap made ones.
You'll find the RE001 noticeably more sure footed then the S drives with much better feedback. Though the S drives are quieter, and has lower rolling resistance.
Fat fives great choice, weighted my wheels/tyres combo today on the bathroom scale and found the fat fives around 0.5kg lighter than the EK4 wheels.

You are wrong Ben. My understanding is the first original batch were Japanese, and now the latter is produced localled, for the aussie market.
Mine are Aussie made - it says it on the tyre :)
I noticed the finish wasn't as nice as my japanese made yoko s-drives. however they still grip well and seldom squeel.

interesting ~ so it shows these "Cheaper" 195/50/55's are jap imports and cheaper or ?
I meant for most sizes they are now made in aust using the re001 moulds from the japan production line.
In the past Aust made Bridgestone were locally developed supercats, ancient jp designed RE88 and horrible tyres like that. Now that Bridgestone Aust is wholly owned by B/Stone Jp, they get all the latest product, works support and really sharp prices to you and me and still mantain healthy margins to their BTCs.
If they keep this up, a real headaches for tyre chains that pushes Kumho, Toyos and Yokos.

o i c. Interesting they still leave the "made in japan" part of the design.
o i c. Interesting they still leave the "made in japan" part of the design.
They would have to change that part of the mould to say " made in Aust " or they'll be done by the ACCC for violating country of origin regulations....That part of the mould would be modular anyway so easy mod for any factory line. Promotional materials might well show the sidewall design with made in japan on it though.
My set of 195/50R15 I bought few weeks back was made in jp, cos it's old stock. All new recent production of all popular sizes of RE001 would be made locally.
