G'day everyone I am the proud new owner of a 1978 civic hatch with the mighty EB3 engine. It needs a bit of a tidy up and as it's my first honda I was chasing some info on where I might find parts for this model? I want to keep it fairly original but would like to upgrade the wheels to a larger diameter + width and at some stage in the future throw in a 5 speed box and maybe even a larger engine from a later/different model depending on what's involved. do these cars run on unleaded ok?

if anyone has an original drivers seat in "sensible brown" in reasonable nic and a set of period 13" mag wheels I would be interested.

cheers

brenden

Congratulations on the purchase Brendan (Would love to own one of these)

I believe if you are looking for parts for the 1st gen's you are in for a treasure hunt

Once in a while Rebuild kits, Head gaskets and even exhaust rebuilds to my knowledge pop up on ebay (here in aus) once in a while

I doubt Honda actually has anything in stock (in australia or world wide) but give them a visit and see what happens (you never know)

Junkyards are a good source of parts aswell though getting very hard to find (If you pm me a list of what is needed/wanted i will be happy to keep an eye out for you)

If you want to upgrade the wheels (and bigger brakes) to 4x100 rather then use the 4x120 set up you can use the 3rd generation Honda civic or 1st generation honda integra brake system should do the trick and be resonably compatible parts wise (some work may be required to fit it though)

How is the rust on the car?

and as SiReal said contact 95civic for more details :)

thanks guys, I'll check out the other threads. yes there is a bit of rust but mainly surface from what I have discovered... so far. I have had a number of older cars - mainly toyotas - and found wreckers are generally a good source of parts but these days they tend to only stock newer cars so rather than spend a day ringing around all the yards if anyone knows of a wrecker/s who specialise in hondas and/or older models it would be great! I will try and get a pic FYI. you mentioned 4x100 wheels/brakes - what do the numbers mean and do the bigger wheels bolt straight on to my current hubs? basically at this initial stage I am after original drivers seat (brown) if you come across one as mine is ripped. thanks heaps.

Hey, mate congrats i had the same car. In regards to wheels i believe some aftermarket 13's came out 1" larger than stock. But apart from that the best you will get would be custom drilled superlights (brand of wheel). If you want to find parts wreckers are your best option. Engine wise are you looking at keeping carby or go fuel injected? If staying with carby both the 1.6 (EL) from a first gen acoord and the 1.8 (EK) from a first gen prelude are direct bolt in's. If you go fuel injected i a honda city turbo engine fits relatively problem free (except for the wiring, it's a real bitch and make sure you get the entire wiring loom from the city turbs) and i believe ZC's and d's fit

If you were to choose the EL or EK engines then you would probably have to get them rebuilt as im guessing it would be extremely difficult to find them with low kms. Both engines can be stroked out to 1.8 and 2.0 litres respectively which would be very fast in a 750kg car.

My mum has a 76 civic with an acoord engine which fits easy and goes quite nice, i also worked the 1.3 (you can stroke it to 1450cc) and then changed to city turbs engine (ER motor). For now if you want some better performance gains just chuck a webber carby and a straight through 2 1/4 exhaust, you could go extractors but they would have to be custom built.

Gearboxes - just find one from a similar year civic/acoord or city turbo (high 1980's) and its a direct fit.

Brakes - go the brakes from an acoord - very good braking and cheap too.

you can also go unleaded but not recommended as it would eventually die - but not for a long time

Cheers timster that was just the sort of info I am after. I am planning to sort the body side & interior out first then keep my eye out for an engine/box combo when the 1200 eventually packs it in (prelude EK 1800 carby sounds good).

it actually came with a set of extractors (not fitted) so I'll throw them on - do the webbers bolt straight on? which one would suit? what would you expect to pay for one? I basically want to keep things pretty simple/reliable.

the brakes from an accord - do they bolt straight on? anyone done a bolt-on rear disc conversion on these?

thanks again

I did the accord brake conversion, they are rear disc breaks, and its a little bit of fiddling for the person fitting them, but they are a direct bolt on.

As for the webber, they are direct fit and can be tuned manually by pretty much anyone - old skool style - you have to listen to it and adjust it accoordingly. I had a 32/36 dgv? (not sure about dgv but definately know it was a 32/36) my mum also has the same on her civic. Brand new expect to pay around $500, but there was someone on here not long ago selling one cheaper. Ask around, have a search.

As for interior/exterior - keep an eye out on the wreckers, ebay, and carsales as you would have to poach a car for spares. My old man spent 6.5k on derusting and painting my mums lime green civic. In my opinion you gotta just find a second civic in mint condition and just rape her for parts.

beaudy! I'll keep an eye out. the bonnet on mine has a bit of rust and I am inclined to replace it rather than repair it - are the bonnets interchangable between the early and later gen 1 civics? I have done a drum -> disc conversion on a corona and it was pretty straight forward so if all the bits bolt on then should be ok - same for the fronts?

as for carby's here is some info I found on the web re webers for anyone who's interested:

The 32/36 DGV is a fairly common upgrade to many makes and model of car, it is designed as an economical performace carburettor. It is a progressive carburettor meaning that the secondary jets don't get used until the carb is pushed to 2/3 throttle, allowing t to be driven sedately or insanely and perform just as well in either. The 32/36 DGV is a manual choke carburettor, the 32/36 DGEV is an automatic electrical choke carburettor and the 32/36 DGAV (pictured below is an automatic water choke carburettor. All 32/36 carburettors share the same design, only the choke assembly is different.

I'm pretty sure these were on 2L escorts and cortinas.

Weber Acronyms:
DGV, DGAV, DGEV, DFV, DFAV, DMSA, ADF, ADM, DMTR, DIR
2 barrel downdraft, progressive

ICH, ICT 1 barrel downdraft

DGES, DCNF, IDF 2 barrel downdraft, synchronous

IDA 2 or 3 barrel downdraft, synchronous

DCOE 2 barrel sidedraft, synchronous

It must have been the 32/36 DGV then as i had the manual choke. I'm not certain on the bonnets but pretty sure they are interchangeable as long ago when i was tinkering with mine i was going to do the same thing.

As for the brake my old man put them in mine so it should bolt on, front and rear, as no modification was needed.

Managed to source a 32/36 Webber DGV off a 2L escort though apparently it has a manual choke (escorts had auto). does anyone know whether I can buy an adaptor plate or will I have to make one up? also are there any mods that need to be done to the jets etc for the carby to work properly on a 1200? cheers

I think you might be able to have the jets modded to make it work properly

thought I would give an update on the civic - found some 13" accord wheels which bolted on nicely. have done some reupholstering on the front seat which looks great - I bought some CRX/Integra seats with adapted runners to suit my civic but decided to keep the interior original so if anyone would like them they are yours in melbourne for $120! (phone 0415 905956) unfortunately the engine overheated badly so I am in the process of sourcing a 1.6 EL engine and 5speed box out of early accord. car has had a full respray in a sort of cream colour. the car came with a set of extractors to suit the EB3 but not sure if they will fit the EL... have sourced some people who supply adaptor plates for the Webber carby - try

I have a Weber adapter plate that cam with my Redline Weber kit if you're still after one. I ended up having the manifold welded across the back, and then milled the opening up to match the Weber. Now I can get the full advantage of the 32/36. The parts for the 1200 are still available, just takes a little know how and advice where to look. I recently bought new Toto pistons, NPR rings, full gasket and bearing sets, distributor, water pump, fuel pump... basically every part to build a like-new engine, I even bought a brand new cam, but I'm getting that reground to a mild spec. I figure it's better to regrind a cam with fresh journals and drive gears for the distributor and oil pump than to use a worn old cam.

Another thing is the 1200 is very light, watch out when you put a big lump in there, you'll have to put in heavier springs and the weight distribution will be nowhere as good. The 1200 have the potential for a lot of power, especially if you build a turbo engine, or find a turbo City engine which other than electrical rewiring, drops straight in with next to no surgery.

thanks for the offer steph...

After 2 years searching and with a lot of hlp from a civic guy in tassy I've ended up fitting an EL1600 & box out of an 82 SY accord - had to change the crossmember and adjust the engine mounts and gearbox linkages plus a bit of wiring for the electronic ignition dizzy but it goes like the clappers! 2" exhaust - apparently the engine was a grey import and had a different head and high flow exhaust manifold which was just as well as there are no off the shelf extractors to fit (only available for standard aust engine). someone broke in and nicked the webber while the car was stored in brisbane so on the lookout again for a webber down draught with manual choke... what's left of the accord is up for grabs too - panels are straight and interior ok...ish... has 14" alloy wheels with good tyres located in gosford NSW. PM for details/pics.

what sort of rims you got? at the moment I have 13" accord steelies fitted but would consider larger and/or alloys.
