Anyone managed to modify their stock seats (or rails for that matter) to have them sit lower in the car? Or does anyone know of any companies that make custom rails for this application?

Really don't want to have to screw with SRS lights nor the extra cash for aftermarket seats when I like the stock ones fine.

Any help appreciated.

find out where the mounting point for the rail to seat is. Might be the same as the recaro rails. Otherwise it looks like you'll need to get some customer rails made up.

Also check out US sites.

Mmmm, problem with that is that I need some detailed measurements of the mounting points of DC5R Recaro rails... and I can't seem to find them, so I don't know what I'm looking for.

Even if I could modify a set of Vision rails or something, that would do me!!

Checked out the US sites thoroughly to no avail. Everyone just seems to buy a set of Brides and screw with the SRS light which comes on due to the side airbags in the Type S seats (which, in process, seems to deactivate the front airbags.... not cool).

Has anyone put aftermarket seats into a Type S?

I've been searching for days now mate, can't find a thing on lowering the stock seats (no "finished threads" anyway).

I'm guessing it's just a matter of going to see the local auto re-trimmer....

I don't really know what the type s seats look like at the bottom, but My recaro's are using super low rails from Bride. If your Type S mounting points are the same as an SR4 recaro, you might be able to use them too.

Just as an aside, if anyone is looking to sell their stock type S seats, PM me!

I really just want to do it for comfort. I find that I get the perfect position for my legs, but I am still slightly too far away from the steering wheel and I don't have a great deal of headroom.

I can bear it, it's not that bad, but I would love to be able to find a way to lower the seats.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be possible without some major modification of the seat rails though. The DC5S seats are actually welded/rivoted to the rails. This is so the driver adjustment knob is able to raise or lower the seat.

I've been reading up on threads where guys have installed these seats into ek and eg Civics as well as da Integras and they've literally needed to take a hammer to the seats after taking them apart to get them mounted directly to the rail.

Whatever the solution is, it won't be easy... which is a little disappointing for a tall guy like me.

correct me if im wrong but i think on the sr4 the bottom seat mounting holes to the rails are the same as sr3, as ppl use sr3 rails to mount sr4 seats into their ek, dc2, etc. vision make super low rails for mounting recaro seats but not 100% sure if they have rails to suit the dc5.

edit: vision rails for the dc5 does seem to exist, i found one on ebay u.k., but try looking for local. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vision-Spoon-seat-Rails-Integra-Type-R-DC5-Recaros_W0QQitemZ350069982309QQihZ022QQcategoryZ72 205QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Vision makes rails for DC5 stock recaro. can you drill holes on the vision rail and rivot the stock seat onto it?

on mount the stock seat to a piece of thick metal and bolt that onto the rail?

yea like waggy said above...
'The DC5S seats are actually welded/rivoted to the rails'

i've been looking into this for a while now and have never been able to find a fix for the seats sitting so high...

Waggy... were you reading the thread where the seats were put into a da and the guy literally smashed the rails with a hammer to sit them lower?
i think ima try this when i get some time... cause im from newcastle and have no idea where or who would look into a job like this for me...

Yeah that's the one. He pretty much just takes a hammer to the bottom of the seat to get them to sit on the rails. Dunno about that....

No idea man, I live in Central Qld.

Did you end up going anywhere? How did it go?

im getting my rear bar sprayed at a combined body workshop so i asked them to check it out for me...

they asked me to drop off my old seat rails and i was like meh... we'll see what happens.. they were pretty confident in modding the rails so i'll let you know the results when i pick them up tonight...

i'll try post pics aiight.

peace

PUCK!

Nothing was done to the seats but they did provide heaps of feedback (we probably already know this but i'll fill you in) - [These were to be put into a dc4 and attempt to be lowered as well.]

Anyways... basically his main issue was lowering the seats! he couldnt bolt on the old integra rails because the assembly was different! so what he said was that the only way to lower the seats is to find custom or aftermarket seat rails for the seats which are actually built to make the seat sit lower. These custom rails must have the same bolt assembly as the ones on the seats now! Either that or they could attempt to make a pair of custom rails HOWEVER... it could be very timely which = big bucks but they couldnt actually put a price to it at all because they dont know if they could be working on it for 2 hours or 2 days.

So my question to everyone is..... IS THERE A PAIR OF SEAT RAILS THAT WILL FIT ON THE TYPE S SEATS TO MAKE THEM SIT LOWER?

These are not the recaro dc5 seats!

as i suggested previously, can you mount the stock seat on a piece of metal which is then bolted onto a lowering rail for DC5 recaro?

the top of the rail should be flat and i'm sure someone can custom make something to bolt the rail and seat together.

Waggy

That's a real shame.

No there isn't. No one makes lowering rails for the stock Type S seats - believe me I've searched. Looks like I'm going to have to buy DC5R Recaros or Bride Euros and bolt them in with a Type R SRS module.

I knew I should've bought an MPS3.....

Never said it wasn't possible, however the mounting for the Type S seats is completely different then just the "bolt bottom of seat to rail" method that most people are used to. They aren't actually bolted to the rails, they are rivoted to a crossarm assembly that is used to lower or raise the seat with the knob on the side.

In order to remove the seats from the rail assembly, you actually need to drill out the rivots holding the seats to this frame, belt the shit out of the bottom of the seat and then bolt them to the rails (and then who knows how much this will lower them). It's a huge, time consuming and most likely irreversible job for an unknown benefit.

This is why no one makes rails for them (ie: you can't make rails for them).

can you weld a piece of metal to that crossarm? which is then bolted onto the rail?

I know exactly what you meant, I've thought the same thing.

What I am saying is, in order to "fit the holes" of the DC5S seat to the Recaro rail a massive butchering job is involved.

You cannot remove the DC5S seats from the rails without drilling out the rivots - and then you need to flatten the metal on the bottom of the seat - AND THEN you have to elongate holes etc on the seat/rails to match the rails/seat.

Sure, I guess it's possible, but this is pretty much permanent (which I don't like the idea of, especially when I eventually sell the car) and I have no idea how much this will do in achieving what we set out to do here - lower the seats.

Not sure... but again, who knows how much that will lower it?

how about remove some foam from the seat?? lol

we used to do that to Mx5s......

Waggy
26-06-2008, 09:42 AM
Haha, yeah that's a very old MX5 trick.... but nah, couldn't be assed ripping up the seats to take some foam out and then stretching the leather etc.

Bleh.... it seems aftermarket seats are the only way.

Philip Lee
26-06-2008, 09:49 AM
yeah aftermarket seats are the go i guess.

you can sell it later when u sell the car.

haha that dead set just dosnt seem right... i see the logic in removing the rails, attaching some sort of metal base then bolting some seat rails but the money, timeliness and safety ratio's just dosnt seem to sit right...

anyone got pics of super low vision rails? i know it maybe stupid but im willing to try anything and be the first to have dc5s seats in my teg which sit low and right!
