i was driving last night, and went to put it in 4th gear but it wouldnt go in, same for 2nd gear and reverse. Only goes in rarely. 1st, 3rd and 5th dont have any problems. Wont even go in when forced, feels like its stuck against something. Changed the MTF but still same problem. When doing the fluid change, i noticed like a ratlling sound when i rotated the wheel.
Anyone have a similar problem before or know what it is?

its a b18c/b20 setup, s80 g/box

thanks

did it fix up after clutch/flywheel change?

see with yours, you can still put it in to the gears, but with this, it wont go in untill you drive around and find the 'g spot', which is random most times

^^^nah after a while couldn't put it in when the engine was on.. few times i could force it.

but a lot was covered in that thread to troubleshoot and ways you can check... my issue is very uncommon and the only other main thing that would cause your problems according to others there are springs...

your talking about the spring on the clutch yeah, hope problem is with the clutch rather than g/box, ill take it to a mechanic when i got time to check it out also

no crunching when putting into gears,

can you select those gears when the engine is not running ?

nope, cannot select them when engine is off either. Only time i can select them when car is off is if i stop the car with it in either 2nd, 4th or reverse, that's if i can get it in there at all

Check your clutch master cylinder reservoir is full and bleed the line. To test if the seal in the clutch master is shagged, put it in gear and sit there for a while, if the clutch slowly starts to grab while you hold the clutch in, it has a dodgey seal.

If it isn't that (as i don't think it would be since it doesnt matter if the car running or not, but its worth checking them anyway), i would think it might be shifter bushes. Otherwise, it may be a bent or broken selector fork in your gearbox, especially since it mainly happens in gears 2 4 and reverse at the bottom of your gearstick.

I don't know if this will help but check the mounting brackets and mounting bolts of the gearbox as I have had a Holden astra that did the same thing and it turned out that some of the bolts holding the box to the engine had snapped which caused the gearbox to shift and stop it from changing into the bottom row of gears, ie. 2, 4, R
