Hey guys, my 99 Teg screams (high pitch) when i start her up... It usually happens when its cold?

I was wondering if anyone has a clue to what might be the problem.

Without looking at the car I would say it would be belts (drive or timing) or a bearing in alternator or something. It would be best to get checked out if your not sure.

Starter motor solenoid not disengaging once the motor is started and key is released.

Is it a screech that stops after a second of the engine firing (belts), or a mechanical whine which begins as soon as the engine fires and then winds down to nothing (sticky starter motor solenoid)?

hope it makes sense

Our 94 Accord's sticky solenoid makes a sound like metallic fingernails scratching against a blackboard. The accessory belt should be pretty easy to identify since it sounds like high pitched chirping.

Thanx guys.

By the majority, looks like its the belts. Shes travelled just over 93000, so i guess i owe her a new belt.

Yeah had the same problem. Especially in cold starts it'll scream like crazy, But after it warmed up it would disappear, found out i had to spray some lubricant on the fan belt =)

put some wd40 or whatever on the pulleys as the cars running or screaming it should go away then u can determine the problem

Instead of WD40, which can damage the belt, apply some spray on lithium grease.

yeh that was the first thing to come to mind....

any sort of spray applied rubber safe liquid is fine...

but its the quickest and easiest way of finding whats goin on... also check the belts to make sure there not shiny that makes them squeak they cant get enough friction... i dnt usually find it with cars more the stuff i usually work on

i looked at the belts today, looks fine?

i will get some Pyroil tomorrow and see how it goes. I was told it might not need a belt change since it only squeeks when its cold on start up.

Will see how it pans out 2morro.

Just put a little bit of lithium grease, and it should take care of it for a looooong while. Don't put too much though, don't want the belt to slip.
