it looks good but u gotta be careful at the diy carwash places.. cos yeah sometimes the high pressure hose is really strong and it flakes off the paint.. even after prepping properly just a heads up!
i dont know. It looks good on drift pigs and older model cars im not too sure on a dc2

Srzly i think high gloss clear coat would look better on a dc2...
And that CTR in the above posted pic doesnt look like its matte finish..i think that s2000 looks lyk rubbish ... just my IMO... such a fine car it originally was...But yeh.. just my 2c
Car wash places shouldnt be a problem. Just wash it in my garage at home lolz with minimal use of water. Yeah ive sprayed my rims matt black already. Planning on spraying the whole car this weekend with a mate. i reckon it would look tuff as, thats the reason why

damn that looks so tuff. As i am doing a DIY job, will i be able to get satin black at like autobarn or repco? Or should i go to those paint places and get the paint mixed up.

If you want to do it properly and make it look good, then it will cost alot. The body has to be perfectly straight and you have to do a good job spraying otherwise it is very easy to make it look bad.

seen it done... ill advised to use cans as it's kinda like foundation on chicks faces... gotta balance the coating perfectly or else it looks shit. good luck to the op... i will try it though on a lip and sideskirts when i get em...
i would do a third coat and sand it down with 1200 or 1600 grit wet sandpaper...
Sweet, sure am using spray cans lolz. Like i said ive done my bonnet it turned out great so far.. Will doign doing the rest of the body this week. The only doubt i have is the paint flaking off? Is there like an uncoat that i should use to prevent this from happenign

if you still had your stocko paint that is very much sufficient assuming you roughened it up some with maybe 800 grit sandpaper before spraying over it.... if that was the case i would have done 2 coats only and 1200/1400/1600 grit sanded the final product for a nice clean look
post pics....
***EDIT***
make sure you leave it out in the sun often for at least a week, it's no alternative but it makes up for the "cooking time" that is done in spray booths...

yep.. to do it straight up too :p
i at least practiced on my old car when it got written off. levelling the satin black is easier if the original paint had been roughened up.
But once you use a can you have to use the whole thing coz when paint starts drying at the tip, next time you spray it, it blotches and it's a pain in the arse to remove and sand down later.
1 can of the 400ml satin black from supercheap can easily do 2 coats of a bonnet... if he pulls it off well then the whole car will cost him less than $100.
Must perfect finishing with the sanding though.

matte black is dead. matte. totally solid finish. looks like arse.
looks like a chalkboard.
looks like primer.
its ugly.
satin black has a very tiny amount more "shinyness"
its not much, but it makes the difference between looking like a unfinished car, and a proper paint job.

i did quite a bit of research into this paint a while back cos i wanted to do my eg in flat black.... now there is all different types...
there is BSAF brand which is owned by glasurit which is the best flat paint money can buy, that what the amg merc was painted in and i believe the s15, it also comes in different colours like matt blues, yellows, oranges etc... brows honda tech you will see... this paint i dont know if you can get it here...
the other option is the spray can job of using john deere blitz black this has got a sheen to it and is not flat and will chalk up as time goes by, most people use this
then there is ppg gloss plack with the flattening agent clear put in it to dull the paint this would be the best bet to go with here in aus i think unless you can find basf.
the evo and wrx i believe pictured were painted with a spray can and was a project for sport car shop in the states
i read spraying flat was actually pretty easy just cant really let it dry out then continue on
also no waxing of the car! just shampoo and dry!

why cant u wax matt coloured cars?
does it scratch a sh1t load easier comparing to black cars?

just to let you guys know that supercheap has got a sale on the "Australian Export ENAMEL" spray cans @ 5x250mg for $10... DO NOT get these.... as it doesn't actually say enamel on it till you read the back... you have to get the ACRYLIC stuff which comes in a green 400mg can @ $14... the enamel shit goes cloudy after some time...
anyways minus the acrylic paint, i have 5 cans i can use as bottom coat and 4 sheets of sand paper (1x800, 1x1500, 2x2000) all costing well under $20...
will do a back panel this weekend....
just to let you guys know the acryllic is fine for automotive and you don't need fancy stuff... this is how it looked on my wheels with 1 undercoat of etch primer and 2 coats of satin black.

"acrylic are not for cars, u need to buy touch up paint"

well i must say this has been very educational.. in the process i found a way to give satin black a nice carbon look through scrubbing.. kinda a pearl gunmetal!!
DO NOT USE ANY LESS THAN 300GRIT TO ROUGHEN UP YOUR FACTORY PAINT!!!! It's a pain in the arse to level the smallest scratch which you'll notice after your first coat.
Pics below of my efforts today (2mp phone camera):
First Enamel Coat
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/dsp26/DSC03502.jpg
First Enamel Coat - 30mins of 300 grit sanding
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/dsp26/DSC03503.jpg
Second Enamel Coat - 30mins of 300 grit sanding
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/dsp26/DSC03504.jpg
Third Enamel Coat - 30mins of 300 grit sanding http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/dsp26/DSC03505.jpg
Fourth Acryllic Coat - Unpolished... 24hr drying time.
- As you can see theres streaks from me going up and down with the can... alo of effort in polishing will have to be done to remove this...
- It can be avoided if you do your Top coat under the following conditions which it wasn't really today:
- Not Windy
- Not Overly cold
- DO NOT do this in the sun, it will dry too quickly giving the streak effect when you start overlapping
- ALWAYS shake your can for at least another 30secs between 1-2 streaks

Thanks!!! :)
I used:
- 4x200mg cans of "Australian Export Enamel Satin Black" @ $10 for x5 from Supercheap to do the 3 undercoats (which turns into like 1.5 coats from sanding anyway)
- 1x400mg can of "Septone Acryllic Satin Black) @ $14 for x1 from Supercheap to do 2 top coats and still have half the can left.
- 300 grit sandpaper, 800 grit sandpaper, 1500 grit sandpaper, 2000 grit sandpaper
- Polyglaze cut and polish.
Will take hi-res pics tomorrow when finished as tomorrow will be:
- Remove minor rough spots (like dirt, spray can blotches, etc) with 800 grit
- 1500 then 2000 grit run through
- Then cut and polish....

spray can matt/satin paint jobs are always gonna have those streaks/linesthrough it.. to do it properly you need to put on a base coat of black then clear it, but use a matting agent in the clear, using a spray gun that is
but great can job though

hey mate never sprayed with cans but lines happen when you over lap when the spray gun is too close. try bringing the can further away. (yes it will not put as much paint down and youll have to do more coats but its more likly not to create lines. not to bad either. throw up some more pics

painter has experimented with 2 pac and acrylic
acrylic looks better as the 2 pac looks to matt, although a buff an polish may make it shiny day in and day our will make the matt look abit crap i think
gna go with acrylic satin black if i decide to do this, im waiting for a sunny day to look at how it looks in the sun as the petrol door looks good all wet and stuff har har!

thats satin black, ive looked at the 3 blacks i like at it comes too
satin black, matte black and SATIN BLACK PEARL < this is sex although gna cost me to much LOL
basically the difference between mat and satin is that mat is very dull, not shiny at all where satin is shiny but doesnt reflect!
heres satin black pearl

would it be easy to clean/maintain satin black ?
yeah but you can't leave dirt on it for prolonged periods coz you won't be putting clear coat on it.. it'll start corroding quicker.
my rims kinda look dirt now coz i kept neglecting to wash off dirt and brake dust.

Good stuff.. i should've experimented on that too!
however post#99 is correct, the fuel cap would've been consistent but when you do the bonnet, the streaks are almost inescapable unless you do it really far because it dries so quick, the texture on the bonnet changes as it dries, but because the fuel cap is small you would've painted the whole thing before it dried.
I ended up doing mine again, made it worse... the cheap enamel undercaot i did was a bastard of a thing, it turns into chalkboard/milky shit regardless. I sanded the whole thing back down and resprayed acrylic over it. tried to level it by sanding it back down then i hit the enamel undercoat on some parts.
over it now looks ****ed, should've left to what i had in the pics in the previous page :( just gonna get it done properly

yeh, although mine will be done via a spray gun not a can. If you were using a car, suggest that you go to a hip hop store which sell different type of can heads that graffiti artist use, buy the wide spread ones :D ive got a few which i use for home jobs on small stuff.
did the streaks look bad in the sun?
maybe add another coat and buff and polish it to get swirl marks instead of straight streaks LOL

streaks were unnoticable in the sun, its when its out of the sun and you see angled light reflections that you see it.
since your using a gun, feel like letting us know who'll be mixing your paint and what head you use...
got a compressor at home, should've used it to begin with

I searched matte white and it came up with similiar results. I guess people confuse satin/matte alot.
I think the white would be a bit easier to spray as any highlights aren't going to be as noticeable. (ie white highlights on white paint vs white highlights on black paint)
less contrast in the highlights so the waves shouldn't be too noticeable.

wondering if clear coating will be needed too, although i think it will make it glossy looking?
JasonGilholme

there are clear coats out there that don't have a gloss finish. Theres matte/satin clear coats that you could use as a top "protectant' sort of layer.

ooo ill have a look at some auto paint stores.
ah thanks zdster, my cars actually painted satin black now and DANG it looks awesome.. although few touchups within some areas needs to be fixed.
had a word to the painter and he asked if i wanted to clear it for protection, but worries its gna make it look like gloss black. if you know what i mean? he wasn't to sure if there is a clear which is like anti gloss kinda thing!
JasonGilholme
04-08-2008, 10:25 AM
i've read that you can mix flattening agents into clear coat mixes to stop the gloss effect to (if he's mixin the paint himself he might be able to try this)
try it on a different panel first tho.
post pics too man!!!!!!!!!!

ah sweet! good idea, ill get him to try it on my petrol door! hahahah!
i see what you mean, and see how it can work.
What someone else is suggested is to just clear it, then buff and polish it after to take abit of the clear out!
yeh i'll post pics this weekend! the front bar is off atm as its getting redone as there was a scratch ( normal paint woulda covered it ) but the matte/satin look made it show!
all i gta say is DAMN, any1 who does this be prepared to prep the surface REALLY REALLY good!

Just sprayed my car satin black with a compressor and gun, turned out pretty nice, it's drying atm. There's a a little bit of orange peel though.
Does anyone know if it will be ok to wet sand it with 1200 or 2000 then buff it out?
Should I use a compound polish or something?
