View Full Version : When using a compression tester... and spark plug thread size?

Gonna buy a cheap compression tester..
something like this

just wondering how you bolt it into the spark plug hole.. just grab the hose and turn it?

just thinking there is no way u can get a spanner or a socket etc to turn it and are they intended jusdt to be bolted in using the hose itself?

and what is the thread size on a sparkie for a b series?

Yeah,i just grab the hose on mine & turn it,they have o-rings so they seal ok just by twisting the hose.

I just got a cheap one & it fit straight in my bseries,spark plug threads are fairly generic.

$37 from supercheap.

as you can see from the pic you provided it can take the 2 different plug thread sizes.


only pain in the arse thins is the bent hose.... gotta keep straightening it and twist it in quick or the hose will bend while you try to thread it in and it won't thread properly

stupid question, i have no idea how to do a compresssion test for engine, anyone can give me a bit of run down and what does it do ?

basically

an engine sucks in air and fuel, then the valves close..
and the piston goes up and compresses the air and fuel mixture


when cars get old/worn, the cyclinder/combustion chamber seals leak... these seals are things like piston rings, headgasket, valves etc

so if there is a leak you will lose some compression


all a compression tester is, is a pressure gauge..

you basically disconnect a distributor cable and pull the ecu fuse
remove the spark plugs

and put the compression tester into a spark plug hole
and crank the engine, by turning ur key like you are starting it

this will make the pistons go up and down, compressing the air in the cylinder
and the compression tester will read the pressure. (kinda like a tyre gauge)


so if there is leaks
the pressure will be low

on a na honda
u want around
200psi ish..
so if u have
200psi 200psi 150psi 200psi
then u know one cylinder has a problem

dont forget to open the throttle while your testing.
