View Full Version : GSI Integra missfiring and running rough

I recently bought a 95 GSI Integra, manual in fair condition with 165kms on the speedo. After about 30mins of driving it starts to missfire and appears to be running on only 3 cylinders. The problem is non-exsistant untill it is fully warmed up. I have changed the spark plugs (the old ones were shocking) but once again after about 30 mins into my drive it started to run very rough and was missing a lot. I have been told the coils or the leads or the distributer could be to blame? I live in Perth and was keen to know if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what the problem could be or if anyone has experienced similer problems? The car runs great when cold and nothing obvious is wrong with it with no oil or water leaks. Can anyone give me any pointers as i don't want to get ripped off by the honda dealers in perth!

are you sure you changed the spark plugs to the right ones?
and are you sure you installed them correctly?

MISSFIRING = SPARK PLUGS your gsi is the same engine as a da9. make sure you do it properly if not find a mechanic.. any should do as its a minor issue. dont need to pay huge amounts to fix the spark plugs. get copper. they are the best running spark plugs that deliver power because of the materials its made of. iridium etc may last long but dont deliver the power as a copper spark plug does.
have fun :)

Yeah i definately used the correct spak plugs and i got a mate to check they were in properly. It's just weird that it doesnt have this problem until it's fully warmed up!? It seems to idle ok and does not stall. but as soon as you rev it or take off it's rough and missfires a lot.

Have you tried a known good set of spark plug leads?

well the thing is...if theyre in too tight or too loose that will affect how hot they get. a problem which woudl rear its head when the engine is warm, as you describe...

I went back to see the guy who sold it to me today and it would seem that about a month ago the coil inside the distributer started giving problems. So he decided instead of fixing the problem he'd bypass it and put in an external coil, out of a ford telsta, and wire it up to run straight into the distributer housing. Then flog the car off.
So I have decided to buy a new distributer and pay to have it installed the original way.
This should fix my problem and won't brake the bank.
Fingers crossed!

just buy a msd external coil its only 100 bucks
there easy to install and it wont break the bank like the factory honda ones do ive just converted mine on my da9 there worth doing if u want i can do it for u im in perth aswell
also check compression aswell.. but it doesnt sound like thatll affect it because its when its warm.. sounds like a ingition system thing...
which could make sense for the leads being faulty because when things get hot they create more resistance and it may be why check ur resistance with the manual and see if its in spec..
if not that make sure the plugs r gapped properly..
i think there .8mm? correct me if im wrong...
the coil can be the same thing as the leads...
but those dizzys and coils r hell expensive hence y i changed mine to a msd

how does it affect how hot they get????
too loose may make it miss fire because ur not gettin compression to the clyinder and will give the same afect as having a blown head gasket...
(missfiring because theres not enough compression to assist the combustion.
ive had that problem on my old supra it was rough until it came onto boost... it had a huge head gasket leak between the 2 clyinders... so therefore wasnt using oil or water but just lost compression..... once on boost it compensated for low compression and seemed to be fine just a lack of power... (even though it was still making 20psi boost)
i dnt understand how to tight plugs effects anything though... the plugs r there for spark not for heat....
unlike a diesel where u need heat, diesel/air and compression to get combustion
