Hey guys, did a search but didn't find the answers I am after.

I have a GSi teg and am considering rebuilding the engine. The motor has hit 150 k and it just doesn't feel right any more. I was just wondering how much an engine rebuild would cost? Am on a mega budget so I am not sure an engine transplant would be in order. Any help greatly appreciated, oh I believe the motor is the B18B1? or is it B2, can never remember :P

MEGA BUDGET!!!!!!!! Nice if i had a choice on rebuilding with a mega budget i would start at http://www.todaracing.com.au/toda_home.html definatly find alotta goodies there that i wouldnt mind putting in mate change cams, cam shaft pullys, springs, oil pump and some forged pistons mate talk about high redline!!!!! 6g would give you a really mean aspirated engine, but keep in mind its useless unless youve upgraded other parts of your car cause thats where you really see the benifits in the engine
Thats my opinion keep in mind im not an expert so i dont know details lol

u didnt say if u wanted an FI or NA engine, and u didnt say if u wanted a fast Street car or a fast drag car or a fast track car

do you mean that your budget is high or low?

sounds like it's low.

so just to rebuild is like removign the pistons and honing the bores and installing new rings and also repalceing the bearings, water pump, thremostat, and any other wear items.

does it blow smoke or just 'not feel right'?

you might just need a service, eg dizzy cap and rotor, cehck teh plug leads, etc etc

first thing to do is to get a compression test done to see whether the engine is still 'healthy'...

then maybe decide on whether to rebuild it or just give it a comprehensive external freshen up...

if your on a low budget Javed go fo tinkebells option, Compresion test is your best freind, do a wet and dry test. Your GSi will have a B18B2 if your VIN meets JHMDC445/435.

Yeah guys, sorry meant im on a low budget. YEah its not blowing smoke, just doesnt feel right, sounds loud (tappets or whatever, although they were all adjuested recently) and yeah. Ill get a compression test done, what should the cylinders be reading? Also how does a compression test actually work ? Cheers guys thanks for all the help.

well a compression test works by removing your spark plug and inserting a pressure guage in its place when you crank your engine your pistons will hit compression and the guage measures this. Not aure what the compression for a GSI is but usully your allowed 5 to 10 % veriation between the cylinders if this more then you might need oversized pistons.

where your tappets adjusted with a stone cold engine. also when you do a wet copmression test, they pump a bit of atf fluid down the hole, the aft acts like a sealant and is used to determin the condition of the valve seats, reffer to a work shop manual for compression specs.

compression on a cold B18B1/2 engine with throttle butterfly held open cranking at 250rpm should be 199psi

with a minimum of 140psi with a variance of 28psi between highest and lowest reading as acceptable.

from factory shop manual.
