hey guys I DIY myself a pair of smoked tailights for my EG. The finished surface is quite matt.

Last night at boxhill a blue eg with smoked taillights was parked next to me, it had a glossy finish! looks more OEM and clean.

Anyone out there done the same? how'd u do it? several coats of clear coat?

cheers, Lex

u need to clear it with a spray can, what did you use to smoke the tail lights?

for a better DIY, should have opened up the tail lights and smoked it inside

just clear coat, about 5 -6 layers.

5-6 coats is way to much, 2 light coats will be fine

This is how it turns out after glossed

i used niteshade, 2coats then removed the paint from the reversing light, so they are tinted except fro the reversing lights.

yeah i was thinking u need quite a few coats for it to turn out real glossy.. 2 is not enough to achieve the real glossy look...anyone got pics of there glossy smoked tail lights? post them up.

cheers

You can get tint vinyls to place on your tail lights. These can be found on ebay and allows you to reverse your tail lights back to stock if you get over the tints.

Sry to hijack but where can I get those license plate "protectors" as seen on that hawt Dc5? I have custom plates and they're getting ruined good by debris.

errrr honestly do people even try ? Go to autobahn or similar auto store and they should have generic protectors... hell even Kmart auto should stock them.

hahah thanks svetle, although that came with the car.

in regards to the vinyl, i would say no to that. it looks ok from far, but tacky from close up

if you wanna gloss up tint you got 2 options; spray clear coat or polish it with a rotary polisher and lots of scratch x

if you had the USDM rear lights slightly tinted, but tinted the break lights more i would prob root your car

it looks better in the afternoon the whole back of the car is black. and at night the tail lights look so much better than stock because it lights up in like a perfect line rather than sort of lighting up the bottom half and light refracting into the top half. if that makes any sense?
