Likes, dislikes, trials, tribulations:
-Sounds stock, feels stock, looks stock, till you put your foot down.
-Excellent combination of off boost cruising and fuel economy allong with the power and performance when you need it.
-Only slight problem is minimal boost creep. Due to the high flowing manifold design, WG placement, large rear turbo and low boost.

Likes, dislikes, trials, tribulations:
-can drive like stock, fuel economy is almost the same as NA, quiet exhaust, turbo spool, suprising other turbos/v8s
-dont hear much vtec as wastegate is loud, no traction on boost, gets hot in summer, no AC :(
-HASPORT dont make engine mounts to suit ef8 so only OEM, alot of custom work as nothing else fits
-Heat temps under the bonnet getting to high..paint peeling off rocker cover!

yeh i highly reccommend the clutch to normal street driven cars, cos you can ride it at low revs at shops etc and when you rev it higher, it grabs really hard.

alot of my driving was street driving, ive only been to the drags once (very hard to get fri nites off:( )

Power Output::
To be honest, i was slack, and i never got any printouts or photos of its last time on the dyno. Had other prioritys. The highlight for me was seeing it fry the tyres on the dyno when the tacho reached 8000rpm. It made peak power higher than alot of people thought a D-series could.

That run was on 17psi and power flatlined at 200kW (cause of the spinning) from 7800-8500rpm. We re-tied it down and it made a healthy 230kW at 8000rpm. 22psi.

Ive got a video when it was running 14psi (http://users.bigpond.net.au/weq/turbo/P6180013.avi). This was on the run-in tune a week or so before the final dyno.

Likes, dislikes, trials, tribulations. Be honest
* Too much lag. Should of gone for a GT30 and not wussed out. The 71R had no response and top-end left a little to be desired.

* Reliablity of the gaskets on the turbo/exhaust. There wasnt much room to work with, and it needed US spec gaskets. SO many bloody hands. They always blew out cause the bolts would back out.. Ahh its a common issue alot of people have. I would re-do all the joints with V-bands.

* I went through two engines (1 forged) due to incompentant machinists or people who said they new what they were doing. In hindsight, i should of built the engine myself. Its not that hard and the care other people take with your stuff is not upto par. They have no respect, and just want your money.

* Could of gone smaller on the charge pipes. 2.5" would of been more then enough and just added to the lag of the GT2871R.

Power output (dyno graph prefered)
This was my only tune. We had boost controller issues (as the graph shows) so peak power was made at 8psi.

http://users.bigpond.net.au/weq/turbo/dynocivic.jpg

In the end, i was running 11-12psi all day everyday. The electronic boost controller we installed was a PROfec Spec B and it was the only one i found which could maintain boost above 5500rpm (common greddy kit problem). Held rock solid to redline. Id say it put the setup at around the 140kW-150kW mark with the cars i used to beat.

My highlight of this setup was beating NSX-GT on the hiway after a KK's cruise. 3rd gear used to pull like a mofo.

Likes, dislikes, trials, tribulations. Be honest.
This was the setup that got me addicted to FI. To be honest, it was easily the best money ive EVER spent on my car. Anything. It was ultra reliable. I used to beat/race that thing every Friday/Saturday or any other night i would go out hunting victims. It was soooo much fun.

* Only downside i can think of is the TD04 was being a little late spooler, for what power it produced. If you wanted to upgrade, a GT28R will boltup to the manifold with a bit of notching of the block, and u will have a mean street setup. You might loose ur aircon though.. it can be tricky.

Videos

This video was from the night of the installation (http://users.bigpond.net.au/weq/turbo/Testdrive.avi). We had the emange hooked up and it was the maiden test drive. It was the first time i had ever driven a boost car, and yeh, it shows.

i found this video on another forum. Some guy running a similair setup. (http://users.bigpond.net.au/weq/turbo/R33GTST_Standing.avi) Gives u an idea of how it pulled.

Likes, dislikes, trials, tribulations:
-Very good kit if you want moderate gains and a bolt on kit.
-Early boost, full boost at just over 3000rpm.
-A good thing is that this kit was used without any cooling mods at all. No bigger radiator, no cooler thermostats, no oil coolers. And it never gave any problems.
-Very fun little car, looks, open air driving, vtec and boost!
-Kit not really expandable if you want more in the future.

Also people have to remember... John would have still made that power even if he used a Factory OEM block (un-built).

A built block will not make you more power.. ( it will actually loose you power if your running lower compression pistons). The purpose to build a block (assumeing you keeping the same stroke/bore/compression - which john did) is to be able to handell more power when your increaseing the boost. John made 140wkw on 10psi, and never ran any more.

All that power came from a good turbo, manifold, well designed and quality made exhaust and charge pipework (unrestrictive).

Just goes to show the potential of a turbo d with a quality bolt on turbo kit.

Weq
04-07-2008, 12:24 PM
yeh at 10psi on that last setup, i was making 150kw. Turbo makes a big difference in power.

GT25/TD04 - 5kw per psi
GT28 - 8kw per psi.
GT30 - 10kw per psi.

Basic rule of thumb. For a B, +4kw to everything.
