Hey peepz just wondering if anyone uses penzoil? And if so how does it go , what oil do you other d series fans use on your motors?

Any good brand oil is fine.I prefer a semi or full synthethic ol in my d.Every 2-3 oil changes I try something different :)

i use Mobile 1 fully synthetic every 5,000km
change oil filter every 10,000km.

if you want to go the cheaper option, semi synthetic is also fine.

You NEED to state which Mobil1 you are using. Is it the silver 5w-50 or the gold 5w/10w-30?

What is the viscosity of the penzoil you are looking at? Ideally, you want one of the viscosities below, going thicker as your car gets older.

0w-30
5w-30
10w-30
0w-40
5w-40
10w-40

for D series I use something cheap =p kidding... OEM oil is pretty good, I recommend OEM any day unless if your car is like a track monster then OEM won't cut it... different scenario though..

aaronng

OEM is good because it is the correct viscosity. Just change it often and you'll rarely go wrong.

exactly why bother going to the shop and looking for the correct one when Honda has done it for you... it's not even expensive.

Too thick in my opinion. Mobil1 Silver is a 5w-50 oil. I'd rather Motul 8100 5W-40, which is also slightly cheaper at $65.

Ok,I might give that a go.Cheers

Then after that,I would say in November/december I will be tracking the car for the first time, being summer and in Brisbane, what would I be looking for in a oil?

How many kms? If the oil is pretty new, use it and then change after. Just make sure you use the correct viscosity. Your engine isn't highly strung anyway.

haha,yeah exactly :)
Thanks aaron I was thinking that to change the oil after not before.I haven't changed the oil yet but cool, like you said if it's pretty new, don't change till after.Being hotter,in summer would you be looking for a slightly thicker oil?

Nope, I'd just use a 5w-40 all year round if the engine was a few years old. My own engine is new, so I alternate between 5w-30, 0w-40 and 5w-40 depending which is on sale.

97k is young for your engine. Mine is at 66k with 4 trackdays. So it could potentially have more wear than your engine. :)

Mobil 1 pretty good oil, if you are willing to pay the $70/5L you'll be v happy with it.

Bought it on sale for $60 at Supercheap and used it on my ED9 B16A for exactly 10,000km. Even when at the end of the interval the oil has only deterioated a bit. I normally change the oil every 5,000km.

I replaced the mobil 1 with Nulon 10w40, despite the 40 rating at the warm end, it actually feels thicker at normal operating temp and the eng feels more lethragic than with the Mobil 1 5w/50 before it. So for those who thinks 50 is too thick, not in this case ( on top of the fact that the sae rating has a range where diff viscoities in cst fall into ).

If you want bang for your buck and in 10w-30, buy a bottle of Calibre 10w-30from supercheap auto, comes in 5.5L and often on specials for $22-23, normally around $26 or so. It's made by Caltex Aust.

I used to buy valvoline 10w30 for non high performance jap cars, but the Cailbre is now about $5 cheaper and 0.5L more.

The Honda FEO varies in price, depending how much the honda dealer parts guys is willing to cut you a deal ie anywhere from $28-40. And it's not bottled and imported into this country, instead it's supplied by a petroleum company ( someone in this forum mentioned it's from caltex ) and packaged in a Honda FEO labelled container in the very easily achieved 10w-30 oil grade.

there's a few occasions when i rev out and i see a cloud of smoke behind me..
any ideas??

prob too thin for your car, the sin0 is 0w40 or 0w50 right?

just try 10w30 at your next oil change, if smoke persists you can try 10w40 after that.

0w-40 and 0w-50 are THICKER than 10w-30 at operating temperature.

when in doubt mate go the factory recommended oil, Honda oil and filter ftw, may seem dear compared to other brands but is worth it in protecting your engine. You think that Honda's Engineer's didn't do proper testing to ensure a balanced product, I've taken the pepsi challenge in the past with oils and it's your car, it's worth using proper lubricants.

I've got the thinner penrite sin 0 in there now and it blows a bit of smoke at higher revs sometimes... :s

Black smoke or white-blue smoke? Change the PCV valve first. You can use 10w-40, but I don't think it will make much of a difference.

On paper yes...but practically no...

0W50 has to be made up with huge amount of VII....which will shear in no time....I am guessing after 1000km to 2000km. It will become 0W40, which will be thinner than 10W40...

and you would wonder why no big oil manufacturer makes 0W50.....

Not much difference once the engine is warmed up. The only difference is during cold start. Just use 5w-40 at your next oil change.

Sorry to bump an old thread. My car is due for another oil change. I drove 4500km in 6 months on Castrol Magnatec 10w-40. Should I go the same or opt for Honda OEM stuff? Do you just purchase that stuff from any Honda dealership?

Car is a 94 EG Civic Gli hatch with 81,xxx kms atm on the D15. Is there much difference between the D15 and D16.

Cheers
