Poor fuel economy, 91 2.2 auto

Hello all,

I have recently bought a 91 EXi in very good nic as a cheap run around...

It turns out it is not so cheap, at the bowser that is. Only getting 13.5-14.0 L/100km round town (should be 11L/100km). This is all when driving like a nanna 80% of the time...

Here is what I have done: New air fiter, plugs, fuel fiter, full injector clean (ultrasonic). All with pretty much no change! (also compression test showed 100%)

Next I thought oxygen sensor replacement.

Am I just throwing away my $$ which could be spent on 000's of kms worth of petrol!!!!

All advice greatly appreciated :D

How many kms on the engine?

The older the engine - the more fuel economy suffers from worn rings and carbon build-up in the combustion chamber and manifold.

What about the ATF, engine oil and oil filter? What about the spark plug wires? What tyre pressure are you running?

it is an auto --- i don't think what you are seeing is anything remarkable.

I have a 1991 Civic that does around 11 litres / 100 in stop start heavy melbourne traffic. Automatic tranny. And that is only a 1.5 litre.

The real test is what does it do on the open road? Around town consumption can vary heaps depending on how far you drive, traffic conditions, average speed etc.

180000kms, compression spot on on all four.

Just had new oil and filter. Ignition leads looking pretty old, but not to sure where to get em for a reasonable price. Tyres and pressures are all stock (running 34psi) What is ATF?

I'm going up the coast tomorrow so will see what the open road consumtion is like.

The consumpion stats on redbook state - 8L/100km open road, 11L/100km city for the auto and 7.4L/100km open road, 10L/100km city for the manual. Not too sure how acurite these are...

Get honda oem leads. ATF is auto transmission fluid. Use only Honda ATF.

I got a cb7... i get avg 11km.. but thats me running on smaller profile tyres that are to small for the car..which mean the km's dat clock up are not realistic.

I've never had my car have the compression test and stuffs.. and it seems to run okay.. but yes it eats petrol like crazy..i noticed granny or not granny style it eats roughly the same amount..

Yeah I used to have an auto '91 as well.
They are very bad on fuel for a small car.

Open road consumption seems to be around 9.3L/100km Which isnt too bad...

I do think the car is a bit sluggish below about 3000 rpm which requires a bit more pedal down action.

I want to change the oxygen sensor, but, for 120 odd bucks I would be pissed if there was no change!!

Ok, so $120 was a bit low for the O2 Sensor, how about $279!!

Anyone know of any tried and tested ways of cleaning the O2 sensor?

not much point in really cleaning a worn 02 sensor really. Best bet would be to source one from a wreckers or parts supplier.

Do you know the service history or intervals? It plays a pivotal role in your cars overall reliability and maintenance.

Another thing you can check is your timing, if it's been advanced then chances are it'll be drinking more.

EuroBro Wouldn't be too sure on that. My car has 247,000km's, its a Carby engine and still gets under 9L/100km

I got a F22B engine on my accord, its a new engine. Its done about 102,xxx
im getting 650k's full tank that is, also thats when the Fuel light on the odometre turn on aswell, and yeh their aslo M5 kilometres most of them.
And im running on 18inch rims lowered to 2.5 inch.

I love my accord~!

Before spending $120, try something cheap first.
My civic used to get 450 km/tank. After the fuel filter changed, I can get 500 km/tank. The filter only costs $45.
Give that a go :thumbsup:

What is your tyre size? Using tyres with a larger rolling diameter can give you good fuel consumption if you do mostly highway travelling.

My dad's CD4 auto with 2.2L non-vtec engine gives 10L/100km on the freeway and about 12L/100km in the suburb.
