View Full Version : Can B18C2 use RON91 fuel?

hi everyone
noob q's for the noob forum.
Context:
in australia we have the B18C2 which we all run RON98 with.
yet in USA they have the B18C1 (equivilent motor to b18c2).
In USA, the minimum Premium Unleaded RON is 91 (Regular Unleaded = 87 or so). And B18C1 owners DO pour 91octane in their B18C1.
The Question:
- Can we B18C2 owners also use RON91?
- We just wont feel the performance of RON98 right?
- Any risk of detonation n blowing the motor (stock motor)?

i believe aus spec engines are tuned to run on minimum 95
anything less then ur engine will not be working correctly = damage
other countries with lower octane ratings will account for this and have a different tune
this is basically why japan has more powerful engines than the ones they ship around the world. they have better fuel.
well thats as far as i know.
95+ is recommended as 91 will damage the motor

can use it.
your car will run
but you wouldnt want to.
unless you're really depserate but you still might wanna think twice about it.

Theres a purpose when Honda recommends us to use 95 or better fuel..
Follow their advise and receive a piece of mind..Only a few cents diff man.. lol.. y buy a honda integra vti-r when u dun even wanna keep it in peak condition.. Just get GSI integra or other older model.. lol..
Seriously... 95 is the way to go.. Dun use 91.. quite risky..

just a slight correction.. they don't measure in RON.. theirs is MON... their 93oct is equivalent to our 98oct

^^
exactly
the ratings a different, so you cant direcly compare numbers
i dont see how the using normal unleaded will "damage" the engine?if you drive it normally(not snapping through the redline etc) it should be fine. ive had a few friends with jdm/ausdm b16/18's and they use 91oct fuel.. drives pretty much the same as mine on 98oct, only it chews up alot more fuel when you give it to it.

pay the extra and fill 95
though I have friends who pour 91 into their vtir
bloke doesnt drive the car hard (nor does he hit vtec)

Why would you use 91 RON fuel, in an engine which is tuned to run 95+ RON.
Using 91, will only cause the engine to knock, even if you are driving at grandma pace.

^^^yeah.. i wouldn't risk it despite some people fluking not having probs.
but then again 95oct is a factory safety thing because of slightly higher compression than most other cars which are under 10:1.
you'll get more mileage than on 91oct anyway.. worth the extra 4c per litre over 91oct.

me either, im just telling you what i've seen others do
he's car is still running fine. though it would probably shorten the life of the motor.

So in the long run, it'll most likely be a more costly exercise.

i don't even know how you guys do it.. i was running ethanol blend 93oct from mobil forgetting that minimum for b-series is 95oct.. it noticeably runs like shit and gets inferior mileage.

i beleive the ECU runs in limp mode, when you run crap fuels.
my 20v did that when i ran normal fuel, and then the engine light kept coming on when i hit high load

One problem in your logic. The US don't use RON. They use PON (pump octane number). Their 87 PON is our 91 RON, 91 PON is 95 RON and their 93 PON is our 97 RON.
So when the guys on the US forums say they use 91 octane, the equivalent here is the 95 RON. So in essense, they ARE using premium. :)

good work aaronng - that explains alot as to why they say they run 91 in their turbos, without problems

In case you guys want to know more about RON, PON and MON and how to covert, there is a table in this link: http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/Reference/RONMONPON.html

pretty sure honda's don't but thanks for that explanation.. explains why my mates 20v kept idleing rough, stalling and doing weird shit around a certain rpm.. and this was using United's Boost 98oct with 10% eth....

I think their 104RON is still racing fuel. 100RON is their regular premium, unlike us with 95RON.

still jealous though :p
FYI since i know you also used to use United Petrol... their website states that they've removed Boost 98 as their currently testing 100oct with 10% eth which will be at the cost of regular 95oct :D

lol so my motor would be used to 100octane, shiet ive only been giving her 98 :p maybe thats why she loved the Shell V power Racing fuel when i gave it to her a few times...

That could be the reason, especially if you found that you got better fuel consumption with Vpower Racing for no reason! Trouble is, the seals on older engines don't like ethanol, and in Japan, the 100RON is ethanol-free.

Vpower racing has 5% ethanol. That is how they make it reach 100RON. It is also another reason why I don't use it. Ethanol is meant to be cheaper than petrol, hence, Vpower racing should have a price close to Vpower, and not be that much more expensive.

quick question..what about the reverse. scenario.using 98 or 95 on car factory recommended to run on 91?? Any consequences to that? None that I can see off

Wallet becomes lighter. If your engine is rough using 91, give 95 a go. If it makes it smoother or you get better fuel consumption, then either avoid that station for 91 or stick to 95.
