hahah the D was too old and not enough potential though it was a GREAT motor !! if anyone wants to buy the D it's going cheap :)
Not dyno'd yet.. will do soon after I've done intake and timing and plugs etc..
Intake is just my old D-series tube so it's WAAAAYYY too small in diameter, and my old K&N Filter has seen better days.. Am doing an OEM airbox setup - ducted into bottom of box with HKS panel filter if I use the Si airbox, or a TRUST filter if I use the ITR air-box.. I already have the ITR airbox, but no intake tube..
Other engine mod is just a 2.5" cat-back mandrel bent system with N1-style canister muffler - whoever says 2.5" is too big for B16A is wrong..
I didnt use my air-con all last summer - the fan was broken, so I figured I dont need it.. I've left al lthe plumbing in-tact so I can re-install the A/C in summer if it's too hot.. bt for now, I dont need it.. is just weight I been pulling around.
and yeah who knows might boost the B16.. will have to see where i'm at in 6 months time.. at this stage I will be staying N/A but who knows if I get bored HAHAA

hahah Good work VTEChnique.. looking good!
Reminds me when i got my B16a into my white EG engine bay after a handful of dramas like yourself..
I had a breeze, so i got aircon PUT IN, but you originally had it but took it out!! lol..
I dunno wat the summers are like in perth but here in melb i need aircon :P

hmm so what should be my first power-getter mods ?
Header is out of the question as my swap budget got blown out of the water, but what else can I do to the B ??
I think it's running on the original OEM plugs still, and I am a big fan of these plugs, so will probably just remove them, then clean and gap the plugs befpoore re-installing them - my OEM D-series plugs were good for 180,000Kms with servicing.
I am adding some redline fuel system cleaner and doing the plugs ASAP, what else can I do - what have you guys done ? ignition ? fuel delivery etc..
also what RPM do you guys launch at ? have had trouble getting used to it ( only had vtec for 2 nights tho I guess ) but a mate in EK4 smoked me last night and one of his launches I noticed was minor wheelspin, but like 1m after taking off he hit VTEC !! this made a huge difference being B16A vs. B16A it was essentially a race to who could get into VTEC first HAHAAH..

That intake arm and pod look......well wrong! hehe

21-09-2004, 11:48 PM
hahhaa yeah i removed the whole IM and thoroughly cleaned the whole thing including the TB and the intake ports (no I didnt P=P, just cleaned to stock finish) and now the poor thing has to suck through a tiny D16Y1 intake hahaha. Good friend of mine has B18C intake tube for me to try, otherwise since i have DC2-R airbox (Thanks Marz!!) Iwill just get an OEM DC2-R intake tube.. dont want bling-blung alloy chrome intake.
As for the B18C suggestion ? well low KM JDM B16A came along at the right price and was exactly what I was looking for: a DRIVING motor from a JDM Del-Sol CRX SiR-II .. as in not a front cut or a naked motor and tranny that has been sitting idle for who knows how long plus has been picked up and dumped down on it's arse by a forklift 42 times etc.. corroded water paths, seized etc internals, dried and perished seals the list goes on.
I would still recommend a front-cut to any would-be swappers though as then you dont have the nightmare I had of sourcing the missing and damaged parts etc.
why B16 not B18 ?
well yes budget was an issue, and I did enjoy the prospect of more low-down pulling power, however a B18C was about $1,000 more than the going B16's and my budget could not even come close to a type R swap. Further research and test driving proved to me that:
a. in my opinion, adequate power and torque for MY driving needs could be achieved from a B16A with the right mods.
b. B18C had limited OEM hybrid parts interchangability without further modifications etc. For example the intake manifold. B16A has seemingly endless aftermarket and OEM parts support and availability.
c. The Head seemed to beever so slightly more refined than the more 'gets the job done' B18C IM - though I'm sure there are plenty who would debate this. Better Head = better top end POTENTIAL, plus if I ever decide to Stroke to 2L or go B20 Block Combo, I feel the B16A head once again offers slightly more potential than the B18C.
d. I wanted to remain N/A and the posibility of mild hop-ups from OEM type R (etc) parts to retain factory reliability was very desirable, and the camshaft specs on the JDM SiR-II B16A are approaching that of type R territory, where the B18C Camshafts are more oriented to mid range power.. I want top-end.
e. Staying easilly legal without requiring engineering permits etc. As the engine is essentially the same configuration as my stock D16Y1 (~1.6L 16V PGM-FI VTEC) all that is required in terms of keeping the swap legit are Change of Engine Number forms.
f. It has always been in the back of my mind to think ahead to when I am older and calmer and more of a purist ( like my dad basically) and would want to remain true to the Japanese Domestic Market EG6 Civic SiR-II.. and not make too much of a bastard hybrid, but more of a refined example of what I feel is a 'modern classic'.
theres more reasons etc, but that's the basic jist..
As for Price Tinks.. well totally maxxed my budget - but so far hasnt totally exceeded my set-aside sleep-easy-at-night budget of $4,000.00 all up including:
B16A + Y21 Trans + P30 ECU + Mounts + Axles
2.5" Mandrel Steel cat-back with cannon-style muffler including silencer.
New Outer CV joints on both sides.
Modified Shifter and Linkage.
Modified Engine mounts.
Modified Throttle cable and Water Hoses etc.

nice job... power mods eh?? hmmmm... no extractors??
spoon ventuli plate
vtec controller
plus the intake you been looking at
that should net you some good gains on the butt dyno.
VTEChnique
22-09-2004, 01:45 PM
hahah EG Si.. that's big $$ suggestions there - already have K&N pod filter ; ) dont want pod though.. unles sis in ITR air-box.
As for IM - not at this stage, no need.
ADJ Cam gears will come but prob not Crower.. and same for DC sports headers - not a huge fan of US products.. Prob rather get JDM ITR 4-1 header.. but thanks to Labour cost blowing out to over 200% of original quote, I have no $$ left for header which I DID want to include in the swap.. ohh well..
Type One, what does the Ventuli plate actually do ? am skeptical of this particular spoon product.. and as for VTEC controller - that is useless unless has SFC functions also.. but I dont want even that at this stage.. am thinking more about ignition/spark and fuel delivery mods.. small DIY tuning.. not Pay $$$ for part X and get X HP gains.. blehh :P
Spark plugs leads etc ??? recomendations ?

Looks good but damn is that radiator tiny. The one in my EF9 is a hell of a lot longer.
My same radiator has hanlded boost for 9 months now, never had overflow, with intercooler impeeding flow. That says something for the quality vs quantity. It will take all the b16a has to give imo.

Yea im still using my BREEZE radiator on my b16a and i havn't had problems yet..
Correct me if im wrong, but i think the Auto b16as have the fatter radiator but the manuals are thinner?
Also that the auto will only fit auto cars, but the manual will fit both manual and auto cars?
Like i said tho, correct me if im wrong ^_^
btw - i was going to do the full dc2 radiator as well ..
What needs to be done to make it fit?
Can you still run aircon with a dc2 one? VTEChnique aircon is gone so he should have no probs.. right?
But i just got aircon chucked in so yea? Can you run both like a normal dc2?

i still cant drive it proper yet.. will take a while to get used to powerband, gear ratios, clutch and shift feel. been practicing my launches a bit more tonight but still not into VTEC as fast as you.
hehe yeah Kwinana after I've done intake and plugs.. will have to invite a certain riced-up EK4 to join us.. will make some good footage haha.
cost for labour ? well total was $3,080..they 'discounted' it to $2,150 - initial quote was for $1,000. hrmm. but i wasnt naive and knew costs for a hybrid cost would blow out but i was hoping not that bad.
I havnt had any trouble with temp using the radiator YET.. it was brand new 2 years ago genuine honda radiator so i hope it will be ok for street use.
VTEChnique
23-09-2004, 01:12 AM
to add to that, IF I had un-damaged pulleys, un-damaged mounts, correct linkage and axles plus good condition CV's, the cost WOULD have been about $1000-$1,200 I estimate.
so the key to an ecconomical swap is to get good working order, correct parts all together before you book her in.

haha actually I was being a bit JDM nazi. I dont mind some DC sports, AEM and some other USA products, however I am partial to OEM reliability and Japanese QUALITY.
My D was a GREAT little motor - won me a lot of grudge matches, performed well at autokhanas and pulled 15.61" quater even before exhaust and suspension mods. only prob was needed CV's, Timing belt, Piston rings, Head gasket etc.. it wasnt down on power but i am always worried about reliability and this motor had almost 190,000kms so I wanted a sub-100,000kms motor.
RIP the D !!!!! Respect the D !! Bring on the B.
cool man, it excellent to hear a B16 dude still gove the d16 some respect :)
my Ds get long in tooth now, but it goes better than ever and i dont mind replacing things coz i upgrade as i go..
i got a timing belt and boot to do as well, sittin here lookin at me just need time to put them and some other gear on ;)

With the half size radiator your dont have the condensor infront, two advantages, 1 no air flow restrictions 2 the heat from the condensor in not transfered to the radiator when the air con is running, so on a hot day with the air con on the engine will run cooler than your crx. in normal use the half size radiator is fine. also the condensor is more efficent with out the heat of the radiator.

the reason why the radiators are smaller is cos the motors run cooler :)
higher efficiency :)
Also I know that the D radiators for auto and manual are the same size, but the auto one has a the transmission cooler in the bottom of them. Not sure if this applies to B motors.

Where were you ???? no show ?? after all your noise I thought you'd ACTUALLY show up.. well anyway..
got chopped by a mum in a GLi Lancer on my first run.. just sat there spinning.
Last run (only had 7) pulled 15.020.. talk about teasing me !!
was consistently 15.2's in mid 20 degree heat and running into a headwind.. and on Stock 14" steelies with Pirelly P3500 rubber. still had a bad 60 ft time, but was pushing the RPM higer - was revving almost to 9,000RPM on my VTi Tacho and didnt hit rev-limit..and was still pulling too I might add.
Motor still not running at 100%.. ignition timing is way out, IACV is dirty and creating a bad idle etc.. still throwing O2 sensor heater code and Electronic Load Detector code.
So not running 100% but still managed to 'warm the tyres' more than adequately HAHAH
Must give another shout of respect to the D which took me to a 15.61" with stock exhaust..
In my class, I must give props to Kennedy in his B18C EG Sedan who was around 14.4" and Suki in his DC5 who took class victory with 14.0 consistent passes and maybe quicker in the final rounds.

Me saying I want to see how it likes witches hats (or whatever I said) meant that Yes I am very keen to do a motorkhana/autokhana style driving event (witches hats) in contrast to the 1/4 Mile Drag-Racing we had been talking about in the thread.
bede/adam, make sure you give us penty of notice about the drag day. that way us poor buggers that have to work weekends can get the time off :D
VTEChnique members will be notified well in advance of the VTEChnique Drag-Day as soon as a date has been finalised. We are still waiting for a couple of member's cars' run-in periods (post engine work) to be complete before setting a date in concrete.
I hope to see you on Nov 7. It should be what everyone has been waiting for - LOL !
Adam if you are refering to the below post from Tanghy, he was talking about the Max-Action event which is an autokhana/motorkhana style event - which means timed trials around revolving/set-courses marked out with witches hats.
why don't the 2 of u settle it on nov 7 at maxaction
Im thinking it will be November 7th ?
Bede can you confirm.
Unfortunately at this stage I have no plansto compete in the Max-Action event on November the 7th.
I must point out that you had the opportunity to come down to Drag-Wars last weekend and you didnt show-up, with no reason since given, so you are not in a position to be making any demands to have another big show down.
We (VTEChnique administrators) will inform you (Adam) of the date of the VTEChnique Club Drag-Day and you will be welcome to come down and participate, however please without any hostility, we would appreciate if you would cease to associate yourself with the Club itself.
FYI, I still need to sort out a couple of small things with the swap so I can set the ignition timing etc - is still throwing a few codes and ECU is playing games advancing and retarding ignition per cycle... There isn't much point taking my civic back down to the Motorplex in it's current state of tune.

Mikey, i have seen quite a few MaxAction days and they dont exactly float my boat either. They are boring and use old run down carparks with truckloads of loose gravel. The MC skidpans and open circuit track is purposely built for the sole use of car racing and track training.
Bede I dont have any more predjudice towards you or the club your president of. We just had different views and we have both gone our own ways. Its a shame most people still think there is a lot of hatred between us and keep stirring up 'you' vs 'me' shit. Im glad ur over it all and so am I. I havent spoken to any members of your club since i left either.
Following that, I would like all negativity and predjudice towards me and the existing users of dohc-vtec forums to cease!
Im not one for hostility and i dont believe it has a place in the sport we both love and enjoy. I wish you all the best with your new engine and running of the car. DOHC VTEC takes a bit of time adjusting too from a SOHC VTEC. Maybe i can go thru some hints with you sometime after PAS?

Mikey, i have seen quite a few MaxAction days and they dont exactly float my boat either. They are boring and use old run down carparks with truckloads of loose gravel. The MC skidpans and open circuit track is purposely built for the sole use of car racing and track training.
yo :)
MaxAction used to be organised @ the MC venue in Wanneroo before they were moved to Belmont, after MC took off the ground.
In my opinion both venues are of equal quality - old MC and the Belmont carpark, so if you're refering that that carpark as being old and run down I think you are very mistaken. Belmont carpark is probably the BEST carpark in Perth, with no islands, it has fine, very compacted surface in comparison to the MC old skidpan. I will have to say that MCs old and even new venue has more sand and loose bits than the whole of Belmont carpark put together simply because its already developed.
The New MC skidpans have sand all around it, as does the race track, and i really don't know where you have seen truckloads of gravel at the belmont carpark? they did have a pile of woodchips in one corner of the carpark once but that didn't affect the race surface at all.
I think you may need to revisit the MaxAction racing complex again bro, cos they sure aren't boring. Norbert has been working close to 2 yrs now and has utilised the whole area as a track, he pulled away from having two cars running at once to give the racers more free space, and i can guarantee ya - they are FUN! you should give it a go sometime... and then say they are boring... haha :)
The only thing that MC has going for it over MaxAction is the actual track which you can't use anyway unless u do a test day because MCs race days only utilise the skidpans anyway.
Peace!

So it appears the MaxAction track at Belmont has improved then Ok, i'll reserve further comment until i see it again. I was at the MC driver training day at the new skidpan at the airport and on the open track in the afternoon. In my 2 times out there i havent seen sand or debris on the tracks - unlike the previous skidpan at Wanneroo.
Tanghy, id apreciate it if you stop trying to promote further Bede vs me challenges. Both Bede an myself have our own agendas and Im not going to change mine to suit some one else. All this is doing is reigniting an old issue that has since been left alone. Please leave it at that.
Peace to all too :D

I don't think Andrew is promoting a challenge between You and Bede. He is simply asking you to Race, Steve and Andrew himself are racing on the 7th. They even asked me - but im making my mind up as currently have no suitable wheels to race on.
So that comment isn't directed towards You and Bede - its just for you to take to the track with us and have some fun.
Well - there is no change to the belmont carpark as such... its always been like that, but like i said - i've never seen gravel on that surface. I have seen dust and water, because one time it was Extra Slippery cos of the dust... but no gravel by the truckloads.

WE can - but drags are basically all Motor.. more power better = faster time (technically). Motorkhanas are more driver and driver technique orientated... and power gives seller of an advantage.
Im not saying this weekend or next weekend - im saying maybe after Xmas?

what do u mean what power? for example the power your car makes compared to mine... whats the point of me dragging you if I know I will loose? i might as well tell you that now... you have 152HP at the wheels I have mmm.. 100 maybe?
thats why Motorkhanas will even things out...
Come on --- u chicken???? hehehe :P
it will be fun dude! :)

well ok... so the power is less than a Turbo car - but its still enought to prepell us into the possible 13s or 14s or 15s... all im saying is in a straight line im quiet happy to admit defeat - driving a non Vtec 1.6 compared to a Vtec 1.6. In situations of a drag race there is technically little room for error, Adam simply with his Vtec will be able to catch me and pass me, even if he fks up his launch or his gear changes. I've been there before with Rods VtiR - got an awesome launch on him - whole car but by the top of 2nd he was along side me... theres no Race that way.
Bring some curves into that... and then we have a Race :)

Yes there is a fair possibility DOHC-VTEC may join forces with VTEChnique or TUNED or whoever for such an event. DOHC-VTEC members want an MC day soon.
