Gday,

I clean snapped one of my oem wheel studs today from doing up the nut. I normally step on the bar when i lock them up. Just one slight push to tighten them.

Has this ever happened to anyone here (snapping a stud)? Too much stress because the lug nuts have been over torque?

Regards Ken.

wow; were you using a breaker bar? stepping on it is overkill. I think 80nm is the torque specs for wheel nuts and you can get that from tightening with hand.

I was tightening mine today and had a image of this happening...

I have seen it happen at my old job when noobs used the wrong torque bar, not sure how much it is to fix though.

Yeah no need to stand on it to tighten.
X bar or ratchet by hand is enough.
Better yet with torque wrench

You shouldnt' have stepped on it. I use 120Nm, and that is by hand without doing it up with all my strength. Using your foot to step on the breaker bar was probably over 200Nm!

yes a small breaker bar. lesson learnt

80ft lbs or 110nm is correct from memory

118nm is in the honda manual.
Dont tighten when the hubs are HOT...And dont step on the bar to tighten lol.

is it safe to drive with 3 studs for a short period?

bennjamin

i wouldnt. I have seen it done for a long period of time ( silly member on this forum did it on his breeze) but get it fixed ASAP

I always do mine up with a torque wrench. 110NM.
More consistent and when you're at the track, easy and quick to recheck everyone.

damn
when i was getting my wheel alignment done one of the bolts that adjusts camber i think in the rear suspension broke...they said it was metal fatigue...
they managed to find another bolt and it has been fine but apparently it will take the shop 2-3months to order a new bolt from japan

it has been nearly 2 months since i got my wheel alignement
maybe i'll give the tyre store a call in the next week..maybe they forgot to call me or lost my number -_-

man it's scary
what if that bolt in my rear suspension broke when i was driving?
the rear wheel would start wobbling and i would spin out
:(

80 ft. lb. of torque... I check it everytime I get my tyres looked at, no one has yet to tighten them properly, lol. Buy yourself a torque wrench at Super Cheap for $40, best tool ever, definate must have. This has happened to a few people I know before, and on bikes, mates have had this happen too and had to wait 2wks for new bits from Japan, it doesn't take much to over tighten them.

arn't you meant to tighten them up in a zigzag formation, like bottom left then top right, then bottom right top left? but not fully tightened, and when they are all there, tighten with all your strengtth?

Zigzag is correct, but you tighten to 110-120Nm (depening on which manual you read). Not with all your strength.

crap. i just tighten.. i dont go into all this detail of 110nm and what not.

so long as they're not loose and the wheels wont fall off is good enough for me.

and also within limits of not snapping stuff off.

I doubt anyone would bother about NM of wheel nuts on a street driven family car. Only hard core enthusiasts with after market wheel nuts would go that extreme for a street car.....
I use a rattle gun on mine, does the trick no problems.

rattle gun lol

I NEVER let mechanics use rattle gun on my car :)

They practically weld them on that tight and i've seen so many cross threaded studs/nuts from idiot tyre fitters and mechanics who don't respect the car.
Sometimes they give attitude but tough luck. It's my car not theres ;)

Depends what the torque rating is on the rattle gun.

Yeah on the lower setting it can be ok but not worth the risk.
Seen too many stuff ups and it's not hard for me to tighten them personally :)

Yea, always ask for wheels to be done by hand, it's you the end user who will have to change a flat in the middle of nowhere and then struggle to get the nuts off. If they give me attitude there's literally 100s of tyre joints who can fit tyres in Brissy and I'd just go to them next time...

i put my body weight onto it
i think thats sufficient

easy fixed, i had two snap off my swift and a third that wouldnt go back on properly coz the thread was stripped, still drove the car home but kept it nice and slow, had to wait till they got the studs in which was only a few days

Ok i'm stuck! how the hell do these lug nut studs come off??
Ive notice two screws that hold down the hub shield. If i take these off do they also open up anything?

You are correct Mr Travo

bennjamin

take the shield out and i believe there is a gap around the knuckle to push thru the stud. Rotate the hub and do the next etc.

Same thing happened to mine but it didn't snap inside, shitty nuts snapped from the outside lol, I used 3 nuts for a few weeks on my GLi no problems occured - I wouldn't drive it like that for a long period though.
